Car Free Day 2004
was a success, with many cities across Canada and around the
world participating. The Sierra Club of Canada, Ontario Chapter, has put
together a full report
of Car Free Day 2004. [PDF file]
From the report:
The Sierra Club of
Canada, Ontario Chapter (Sierra Club) took a new, and broader
approach to 2004's Car Free Day celebrations. In its second year of
participation, Ottawa became the first Ontario city to host a weekday Car Free
Day! In Toronto, Car Free Day was expanded to a seven day New Mobility Week.
The featured event of the week, the New Mobility Summit, was guided by a rather
simple theme: "how can we create a day-to-day, year-to-year process that
will see the rise of cycling, walking and transit use, and the fall of private
automobile use?"
Toronto Public Health, Works and Emergency Services, the Clear Air Partnership
and other stakeholders from across the Greater Toronto Area were brought
together by the Sierra Club, with health groups, city staff, businesses,
politicians and concerned citizens to address these issues.

The Car Free Day initiative will give Canadian citizens the opportunity to open the debate and continue the dialogue on the conundrum that exists between the car and the city. The past one hundred years has seen the fossil-fueled vehicle claim pre-eminent rights to the cities and towns in this country. But as the environmental and health effects of smog and air pollution continue to make their way into the mainstream, individual citizens are demanding action: from governments, communities, families and friends. |
