"Petroglyphs and Pictographs of Missouri" Lecture (3/1)   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #114 of 223 |

As President of the Mound City Archaeological Society, I invite you to our next
monthly lecture on Tuesday, March 1, from 7pm to 8:30pm at the Missouri History
Museum in Forest Park. This month's featured speakers are Dr. Carol
Diaz-Granados and James R. Duncan, co-authors of "The Petroglyphs and
Pictographs of Missouri" and co-editors of the newly-published "The Rock Art of
Eastern North America". This program is free and open to the public.

Images on rocks depicting birds, serpents, deer, and cosmic designs are haunting
reminders of prehistoric peoples. Travel with us back in time with two
highly-respected experts on North American rock art acting as our guides. Their
work documents our country's rich array of petroglyphs and pictographs, while
analyzing the many aspects of these rock carvings and paintings to show how much
representations of ritual activities can enhance our understanding of past and
present Native American cultures.

Both books will be for sale in the museum's gift shop, the Louisiana Purchase,
and a signing will be held after the program. For more information about these
books, visit http://www.uapress.ua.edu/NewSearch2.cfm?id=10834 ("The Petroglyphs
and Pictographs of Missouri") and
http://www.uapress.ua.edu/NewSearch2.cfm?id=132438 ("The Rock-Art of Eastern
North America").

This lecture is made possible in part by the kind generosity of the Missouri
History Museum. For general information about the museum, including maps and
directions, visit http://www.mohistory.org/ or call (314) 746-4599.

The Mound City Archaeological Society presents free public lectures at the
Missouri History Museum in Forest Park at 7pm on the first Tuesday of every
month. A short Society business meeting precedes the lecture at 6:30pm, during
which we discuss current and future Society projects and other upcoming events.
Like the lecture, the business meeting is free and open to the public. For more
information, please visit http://moundcity.missouriarchaeology.org/ or e-mail
bgpaulus@... or call (314) 704-3507.

Hope to see you soon!
