From today's St. Louis Post-Dispatch: "BLAKE, LEONARD W.,age 99½, died Aug. 19,
2002; husband of Elizabeth McDonald (deceased); father of John O. Blake and
Helen (Boo) Kula; grandfather and great-grandfather. Graduated from Williams
College (Mass.) in 1927. Retired from St. Louis Union Trust Company in 1965.
Volunteered at Shaw's Garden, Museum of Science and Natural History, and
Washington University where he received an honorary doctorate from the
anthropology department. Retired from volunteer work in 2001 after publishing a
book on ethnobotany. (Pub. 08/21/2002)"
Leonard donated his body to science, so there will be no funeral, however,
anyone who would like to pay their respects is invited to an open house this
Saturday, August 24, at 1:00 PM at his house on 840 Berick Drive in University
City, Missouri.
So far, I haven't heard anything regarding formal tributes and donations, but I
wouldn't be surprised if one of the archaeology labs at Washington University
gets named in his honor.
Since he touched so many lives and had such a strong connection to the academic
community, maybe a small scholarship fund in Leonard's name would be
appropriate. It could be supported with donations from several of the
archaeological organizations around the area. If anyone has any opinions on this
idea, or has any other suggestions, please let me know.
By the way, I found some pictures from a Washington University Friday
Archaeology (WUFA) gathering this past January when we celebrated Leonard's 99th
birthday. You can view them at
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WUFA/files/images/2002/Spring/0111/ . If anyone
has any pictures of Leonard that they'd like to share, please e-mail them to me
and I'll take it from there (be sure to include where and when the pictures were
taken, if you can).
Hope to see y'all Saturday,
Greg
