MCAS lecture: Jim Duncan
Date: Tuesday, September 3, 2002
Time: 7:30PM - 9:00PM CDT (GMT-05:00)
The next meeting of the Mound City Archaeological Society will
feature Jim Duncan, noted archaeologist, historian, and
educator.
Mr. Duncan will give a slide lecture on "Gender Motifs and
Missouri Rock Art."
Among the most frequently occurring rock art motifs seen in
Missouri are those that have been identified as female. Early
researchers uniformly attributed these motifs to fertility
concerns of pre-contact peoples. Although in some cases this may
have been the case, a more likely explanation is found in the
frequency of Native American oral traditions involving a female
deity referred to by some cultures as the
“Old-woman-who-never-dies.” This deity is an ancient,
widespread, and complex figure. Mr. Duncan will describe this
deity and her role in the Mississippian culture that most likely
created these Missouri motifs.
This lecture is free and open to the public, and will be held at
the St. Louis County Library Headquarters, 1640 South Lindbergh
Boulevard (across from Plaza Frontenac).
The Mound City Archaeological Society is the St. Louis chapter
of the Missouri Archaeological Society. It meets on the first
Tuesday of every month, except July and August. For more
