MCAS lecture: Ben Carter
Date: Wednesday, March 5, 2003
Time: 7:00PM - 9:00PM CST (GMT-06:00)
The Mound City Archaeological Society is pleased to present
"Argonauts of the Eastern Pacific: Prehistoric Seafaring in
South America" with Ben Carter, graduate student in the
Department of Anthropology at Washington University in St.
Louis.
Have you ever heard of Thor Heyerdahl's 4,300-mile voyage to
Polynesia from Peru aboard a balsa raft named Kon-Tiki? Did you
know that 14 similar voyages have also been successfully
completed? What did Heyerdahl base his reconstruction upon? Did
you know that centuries ago there were people in the New World
who had mastered the art of oceanic voyaging? Did you know that
seafaring vessels of the Peruvian and Ecuadorian coast were in
many ways more advanced than European vessels of the same era?
Come to the next Mound City Archaeological Society meeting at
the St Louis County Library (1640 S Lindbergh and learn about
the people and vessels that braved the Eastern Pacific Ocean
long before the arrival of Europeans.
MCAS lectures are free and open to the public, and all ages are
welcome. These monthly lectures are held at the St. Louis County
Library Headquarters, 1640 South Lindbergh Boulevard (across
from Plaza Frontenac).
