As President of the Mound City Archaeological Society -- the St. Louis Chapter
of the Missouri Archaeological Society -- I'd like to invite everyone to join me
on Saturday, July 12, 2003, for our annual Society summer field trip. This year,
we'll be paying a visit to our friends at the Center for American Archeology
(CAA) in the quiet little town of Kampsville, Illinois, who are celebrating
their 50th anniversary this year.
Carpoolers will meet on the north end of the St. Louis County Library
Headquarters parking lot, located at 1640 South Lindbergh Blvd (across from
Plaza Frontenac). We'll leave promptly at 8am and wind our way up the scenic
Great River Road, through historic river towns like Alton and Grafton, and meet
at the CAA museum/gift shop around 10am. We'll then head off to tour the CAA
excavations on the other side of the Illinois River and, if time permits, the
artifact curation facility in town.
About 1pm, we'll have a nice lunch at the famous Riverdock restaurant in nearby
Hardin, Illinois. After lunch, we'll head back the way we came, stopping off at
Pere Marquette State Park, where professional flintknapper and fellow Mound
Citizen, Larry Kinsella, will treat us to a leisurely afternoon tour of the
mounds along the bluffs within the park boundaries. Afterwards, we'll grab some
quick refreshments at the lodge, take a stroll through the park's museum, and
then head for home. We should be back at the Library around 6pm.
This event is open to anyone who is interested in going on a little adventure
with others who share a similar interest in this area's archaeological heritage,
their families and friends. Society membership is not required. Besides your
time, the only real cost of this field trip will be the lunch, the refreshments,
and a little gas money. Also, for anyone who might be concerned about being
outside in the heat, don't be; although some of this field trip will be
outdoors, a good deal will be indoors, too.
If you'd like to go, are interested in carpooling (riding or driving), need
detailed directions, or have any other questions about this trip, please contact
me at bgpaulus@... or (314) 704-3507.
Thanks and I hope to see you on the 12th!
Greg Paulus
