I'm very pleased to announce that Dr. Steve Dasovich, the head of the
Archaeological Services Division at SCI Engineering in St. Charles, has invited
the Mound City Archaeological Society to participate in a excavation in Pilot
Knob. Pilot Knob is in the northeastern corner of Iron County about 90 miles
south of the St. Louis County Library Headquarters. It's also just a stone's
throw from the highest point in the state, Taum Sauk Mountain. There's some
beautiful scenery down there, to say the least.
This project, which has no funding, is a continuation of a study of the Immanuel
Lutheran Church and its relationship to the Battle of Pilot Knob in 1864. The
excavation will take place over one weekend in September. The specific dates
will be determined shortly depending on volunteer availablity and, of course,
the weather.
We need at least five volunteers for either Saturday, Sunday, or both.
Carpooling will be available and you need not commit to both days, although
there should be plenty of affordable lodging a couple of miles away in nearby
Ironton if you want to spend Friday and/or Saturday nights there.
Obviously, an enthusiastic response from our chapter will improve our chances of
being invited to participate in similar activities in the future. Please contact
me right away if you'd like to volunteer.

Speaking of volunteering, we still need a few more folks for our "Meet the
Archaeologist" event at Crestwood Plaza next Saturday, August 23rd. Please let
me know me as soon as you can if you can help in any way.

Thanks for your time and have a nice day,
