MAS-MCAS lecture: Dr. Janis Treworgy
Date: Tuesday, October 7, 2003
Time: 7:00PM - 9:00PM CDT (GMT-05:00)
As President of the Mound City Archaeological Society -- the St.
Louis Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society -- I'd like
to invite everyone to our next monthly meeting, which will be
held Tuesday, October 7, at 7:00 pm at the St. Louis County
Library Headquarters, 1640 S. Lindbergh Blvd. (across from Plaza
Frontenac).
This month's featured speaker will be Dr. Janis Treworgy,
Associate Professor and Program Chair of Earth Science at
Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. For more information about
Dr. Treworgy, visit
http://www.prin.edu/college/academics/faculty/treworgyj.htm .
Dr. Treworgy will prsent "Unearthing the Principia Wooly
Mammoth".
For the past 17,000 years, a woolly mammoth, nicknamed
“Benny," has been hiding six feet below ground nestled
between two Principia College campus dormitories. Benny’s
presence was detected in 1999 when a backhoe uncovered one of
his teeth. The site was transformed into a modern
paleontological excavation and, in the spring of 2002, a geology
class of 13 students uncovered two tusks and two molars. Work
continued by students and staff through the summer, and
additional bone material was found. This appears to be one of
the most significant mammoth finds in Illinois. For more
information about this exciting project, visit
http://www.prin.edu/mammoth/ .
The Chapter business meeting will follow the lecture and will
end positively no later that 8:55 pm. Both activities are free
and open to the public.
