You could try vlc, it has its own codecs, independent of the OS ones. I wonder if it is more to do with the small amount of RAM you have in that machine....
vlc does play them, but on ubuntu linux at least (where I tried) it's performance was pittiful - ubuntu with vlc on a P4 2Ghz couldn't even play the same...
