Hi,

The MC1 web has got a lot of new bits listed since the last time.

Check out the GVP 68040 with 16Mb of GVP RAM for $449
Nb. The memory alone is worth close to that!
The high speed serial and parallel expansion for $99
Floppy disks remain at only .50c
Buy some 3.1 ROM's and get an A2000 almost for free... $99 for the lot
Ever wanted a high density floppy drive? ...well I have one that works
in an A2000. $149 (they are $260 new if you can get them)

The site has also gone through further spring cleaning and now has
even more pictures, updated prices and the used parts section has been
segmented into a more logical order.

The site has been updated almost on a daily basis as new hardware has
come in. A lot of things lasted one or two days before being removed:
2091 network card,
Late model A2000 with 3.1 ROM's
High density floppy
A 3 way ROM switcher with external switch (One of Jeff's very good ones)

Don't forget we have a MAUG meeting tomorrow. See you all there. We'll
have a jam packed meeting again. We'll be demo'ing Pagestream 4.1!

Hello,

A company rang me and asked for some dead 1081 & 1084 monitors.

Does anyone want to donate a couple? Preferrably not total basket
cases eg. bits hanging out.

Jeff? Reid? Dave?

Bring them to the meeting tonight if possible?

I'm afraid I don't kmow Michael, I've never seen an Amiga 5000.
Are you talking about the Power Computing A5000 or some other job?

But the monitor should work anyways, how do you hook it up to a PC?

What did you do? Did you tell them you were an honourable life
member?
Or did you threaten them with that red-buttoned buzzer of yours?
Or, worse still, worse case scenaro, told them you'd send the Savage
Beast around if they didn't cough up?

In anycase, well done. What was wrong with it?

Hi,

If anyone is wondering what these drives are worth they were worth
$765 just over a year ago. I bought the internal version for this
price so the external version has got to be worth more.

Sounds like a pretty good deal especially because SCSI has a lower CPU
overhead than IDE. Plus you can fit 6 devices onto one chain instead
of only 2 with IDE. You can also run all 6 devices at the same time.
IDE devices take turns so that only one is running at any given time.

The only down side to this deal is that you lose the burnproof
technology that most new drives come with. Burnproof is primarily a
software technology so sometimes your Amiga burning software may not
take advantage of it anyway.

Burning at 12x or 16x takes about 3-4 minutes. So it's fast!

External CD burners are attractive if you move your hardware around
regularly or have more than one system that you want to move the
burner to.

Hello,

Last night I did a test with a 16x Lite-on IDE (internal) CD burner
with burn proof to establish exactly how fast it was. It took about 7 minutes to
burn a
full CD. The burner was burning direct off the hard drive (ATA 100) and the hard
drive was not on the same controller. The whole thing was sitting on a
fast PC with lots of everything and nothing else running in the
background.

That's about twice as long as a 16x Yamaha SCSI burner (3 - 4 minutes). Thus
people shouldn't be fooled by speed claims. SCSI is inherently faster
than IDE.

One of the nice features of the Yamaha are an 8Mb buffer! The standard
IDE burner has only 1/2Mb to 2Mb of buffer!

The other thing you might notice about an IDE burner is that you can't run as
many things
at the same time as you burn. In fact if you're playing safe you won't
run any (although burn proof should protect you from some of this).

a 16x burner is technically impossible to burn at that speed. Simply
impossible!!

It uses P-CAV and on SCSI. Note: PCAV is slower then no speed changing 16x
writers. SCSI makes little to speed of burn time, only if you have problem
with your IDE bus.

Trust me. I *LOVE* scvsi burners.. Unfortunately I bought a IDE burner
because ya cannot get a good fast SCSI burner copies all the copy
protection schemes out there. Yamaha is about the last to move to
SCSI. Either way, SCSI vs IDE burners speed time? No difference. check
any cd reviews ( www.cdfreaks.com , www.cdrinfo.com , www.cdrlabs.com , etc)

If it was *THAT* fast (3 to 4 mins), the 24x Yamaha burner would be
slower/same speed as the Yamaha 16x. Again.. not possible. :)

Check reviews and also gimme a snapshot using Nero with the 16x burner..

150k/s * 16 == 2400k/s :)

650 meg / 2.4 meg/s  == 270 seconds (roughly)  == 4.5 mins (that is not
including lead in and lead out, nor tray loading, cd ATIP analyising as it
starts its burn , etc :) so in a real world you are looking at about 5
mins for a 74 min cd.. roughly. ;)

As for multitasking, I can can multitask fine (see playing Stronghold or
Return to Castle Wolfenstein while I burn at 24x with a IDE burner ;)

Ohh for the proof: a review from www.cdrinfo.com on the yamaha 16x SCSI:

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Articles/Specific.asp?ArticleHeadline=Yamaha+CRW\
2100S+CD%2DRW&Series=0

Burn time of a 80 ,mins cd is:
But real world burning time of the drive is: 350 seconds == 5.8 minutes.

Never compare a 16x burner to the speeds of a 24x or a 40x burner.. :)

Hello groupies!

Yes here I have an Amiga 500 for sale. Including an AX-RAM FOUR expansion
module. That is a four-simm memory expansion card with an on board clock
and two slots are populated. Also included is a the popular half meg
expansion card. Leads, mouse, joystick, A501 mod, 60 watt p/s and the
Amiga Starter sofware kit are all included. Including manuals.

Also for sale are a load of games. Some extra sofrware. And I'll proably
throw a few in with it as well.

If anyone's interested just send me a mail.

Thankyou for reading.

Kind regards, Damien Stewart.

Subject: Printing Problems

Hi guys.

Yes I have a problem with my printer. I'm using a Canon BJC-255SP with Wolf
Faust's BJC-250 driver in Wordworth. The problem is margins and alignment
during printing. What I am trying to print is a set of business cards. Now
the sheet has a margin of 15mm both sides, and 18mm on top and bottom on a
standard A4 page. With 2x90mm cards across, 5x52mm down. Hope all that is
clear.

So I set the margins in WW, find out I have to define a custom page 'cause
it doesn't like my A4 and keeps stickings it's own border limits on the
margin. So that is fine now, I make sure the printer setting margins are
zero in WW and go to print. (Again.) As you can see I've gone to alot of
trouble trying to figure this out and come to you guys--the ever
resourcefuls--to for help

Problem is the printer prints about 5mm too far across to the right,
although the paper is right up against the edge. And when it looked okay on
top after a while it overlapped the cards. I just can't get it to
accurately print it.

Does anybody know how to fix up these stupid printer problems. Or do you
have to:

a) use a Mac or similar product
b) get a new printer or
c) buy TurboPrint

I tried the systen printer prefs, but they just don't seem to work in 3.9. I
mean the gadgets don't seem to do anything. I can't figure that one out.

Thanks for any help. Bye Bye. At least the screen seems even.

Hello all.

Again.

Well this is mostly useful for Scott and Michael to read as it is directed
to them.

As Michael is well aware of I have been looking for a digital camera. He
suggested what I think was called an IXLA. However after going to swap
meets I cannot find this or any other dual serial-usp type. Let alone for
$80.

Can any of you guys give me any hints on where to buy one? And don't tell a
swap meet, I've been to them so many times and I'm getting sick of going
to them now?

Thanks.

Hello,

Paul is of course quite right. The times I quoted were minus the
lead-in/lead out which usually adds a while to the process. I was just
using Nero's own build in timer (which tends to underestimate time
taken).

In general however the Lite-on seemed to be slow compared to my
Yamaha. The Yamaha has been tried on lots of different software and
hardware (Amiga & PC) so I have some reasonable benchmarks to work
with. This might be a reflection on Lite-on quality? So Paul's
comments are spot on.

Lower CPU load and big buffers are still in the Yamahas favour though.

:-)
