Just wondering who is planning on going to the Nationals since they are
relatively close this year?

We are hoping to go.  I'm not sure if my best goats are bred or not so I'm not sure what we'll have to bring.  But even if I don't have anything I want to show, we'll at least go and watch!

I don’t know how many Minnesota breeders knew her but I know any that showed at our show would and thought you should all know that Bonnie Bauer died this afternoon.  I don’t have many details but felt many of you would want to know. Bonnie has been fighting cancer since last summer. Our sympathy goes out to her family and friends.

Oh my, I just wrote to Bonnie's son this afternoon to ask him how his Mom was doing.  We feel so bad for her.  We knew Bonnie for years and just got to really know her well in the past few years.

Thanks for letting us know.  Bonnie was a wonderful person and loved her goats.  Marlys Anderson bought two of her nubians this fall.

I know we’re going to Nationals and I think Stampers and Underwoods are from the CVDGA group but that’s probably about all. At least that’s all that has talked about it so far. I know I ran an article about Nationals and some updates I got from George Altheide in the newsletter that’s printing right now.

Hi All,

I am posting this for a friend.....

I've just tentatively accepted a job offer in Quebec and am putting my farm
on the market. No - we aren't giving up on dairying - far from it - we are
just planning on buying another farm further North and continuing along the
same path. The translation market in Canada is quite a bit more fertile
than in the U.S. and the job offer is too good to refuse. Off-farm income
can be a beautiful thing, especially if it doesn't interfere with lambing
and milking. <g>

I thought I'd post this message to the list in case any of you are looking
for an existing dairy operation (grade A) in the Wisconsin Sheep Dairy Coop
area in proximity to Minneapolis/St. Paul (45 miles). If so or even if you
just want to be able to take a closer look at an existing operation, I have
a Word document with pictures, maps and specifics that I'd be happy to send
out via email. Feel free to email me off list at ccapaldi@...
<mailto:ccapaldi@...> .

  Thanks,

Sorry for the mass mailing.

I am having a heck of a time finding fresh skins.  Have any.

Our dance troupe uses goat skins for our drum heads.  We are presently down 3 drums because of split heads.

We need to buy at least three pliable skins (salted is OK).

Diagnostic Specimens Shipping Regulations, Effective February 14, 2003

  DIAGNOSTIC SPECIMENS SHIPPING REGULATIONS

Effective February 14, 2003, a new final rule by the U.S. Department of
Transportation ("DOT") will go into effect, changing the way diagnostic
specimens are defined, classified, packaged, and transported.

Diagnostic Specimens are now listed as Hazardous Materials: "Diagnostic
Specimens", previously exempt from regulation will now be listed in the
Hazardous Material Tables of Title 49 CFR and will be subject to the new
rules summarized here. These rules relate to specimens that are potentially
infectious only, and so formalin-fixed tissues (for example) are exempted.
This document is only a summary and the complete regulation should be
examined at:
http://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr/EPA-IMPACT/2001/January/Day-22/i92.htm to ensure
accurate interpretation.

Definition of Diagnostic Specimens: A Diagnostic Specimen is defined as
"any human or animal material, including excreta, secreta, blood and its
components, tissue, and tissue fluids being transported for diagnostic or
investigational purposes, but excluding live infected humans or animals."

Packaging Required For Shipment of Diagnostic Specimens: Generally, unless
Diagnostic Specimens are transported by ‘ground based private or contract
carriers using dedicated vehicles’, these materials must conform to the
standards listed below. (Note: these regulations DO APPLY to FedEx and other
commercial shipping companies. The stringent parcel size limitation in the
section "Diagnostic Specimen Shipments by Air" below is important for any
company that routinely ships by air.) Ask your carrier for a copy of the
document "Packing Instruction 650" which includes additional requirements.

Diagnostic Specimens must be packaged in triple packaging consisting of:

  * A primary receptacle: Primary receptacles must be packed in secondary
packaging in such a way that, under normal conditions of transport, they
cannot break, be punctured, or leak their contents into the secondary
packaging.

  * Leak-proof secondary packaging: Secondary packaging(s) must be secured in
outer packaging(s) with suitable cushioning material such that any leakage
of the contents will not impair the protective properties of the cushioning
material or the outer packaging. If several fragile primary receptacles are
placed in a single secondary packaging, they must be individually wrapped or
separated so as to prevent contact between them.

  * Outer packaging: The completed package must be capable of successfully
passing the drop test at a drop height of at least 1.2 meters (3.9 Feet).
(There is no size limit to parcels containing animal bodies or body parts.)

The outer packaging must be clearly and durably marked with the words
"Diagnostic Specimen".

The outer packaging must have the orange-black ‘International Biohazard
Symbol’ affixed.

Liquid Diagnostic Specimens - must be packaged where the:

  * Primary receptacle is leak-proof with a volumetric capacity of not more
than 500 ml (16.9 ounces)

  * Absorbent material of sufficient quantity to absorb the entire contents
of the primary receptacle(s) is placed between the primary receptacle and
secondary packaging

  * Multiple fragile primary receptacles placed in a single secondary
packaging must be individually wrapped or separated so as to prevent contact
between them

  * Secondary packaging is leak-proof

Diagnostic Specimen Shipments by Air additionally require that:

  * The primary receptacle or the secondary container is capable of
withstanding without leakage an internal pressure of 95 kpa (14 psi)

  * The outer packaging does not exceed 4 L (1 gallon) capacity. Note: this
volume limitation does not apply to parcels containing ‘animal body parts,
whole organs, or whole bodies even if known to contain or suspected of
containing an infectious substance’. However, the outer package must be
labeled to indicate that the contents are subject to special provision 49CFR
A82.

Training Requirements: Persons preparing or transporting diagnostic
specimens "must know about and be able to apply the requirements of Sec.
173.199 {Title 49 CFR} to specific shipments".

I'm doing some checking yet one CAE results and WSU .

So far,  from what I have learned, WSU is still the preferable place to have my CAE testing done because of where the main marke is for my extra goats.  It is the K-Elisa.
The U of MN does CAE testing, but that is the AGID.

I have had problems in the past with too many false negatives using the AGID at the U...evidently antibody level wasn't high enough in younger animals to trigger positive reading?( I'm guessing).   Anyway, it wan't until I switched to WSU's ELISA that I had much better luck getting CAE under control in my herd.

Today is the last day to bid on the four straws of semen I have listed on
the www.cometothefarm.com auction site from the well-known French Alpine
buck New Era's Kane, A000604582. Here is the link to the auction itself:

http://cometothefarm.com/cgi-bin/auction.cgi?category=catb_subbb&item=104524
2500

Kane was a son of Serendipity's Bruiser, out of:
   GCH New Era's Kibitz 3*M FS 89 (85 95 91 89)
   1st place 4 yo, '84 Nat'l, 1st place aged doe, '85 Nat'l
   4-2 279 3020 3.8%
Kane's stats are wonderful, having 65 daughters in 31 herds, 153 lactations
measured by DHIR. He has had 48 daughters Linear Appraised, in 25 different
herds, in 11 states, with 91 appraisals in all, and an average final score
of 84.8 (not too shabby!) His PTA % is 1.1, which is very nice indeed!

You can find his full stats on this link to the missdees website:

The auction closes at 12:08:20 Eastern Time, so get your bids in while you

We have had a lot of kids in the past few weeks.  As much as we would like to, we cannot keep them all.  At this point we haven't really determined who is staying and who goes but if you are interested, take a look at them and if one (or two <G>) catch your eye, ask about them.

The photos I have are when they are only a day or two old and I am hoping to get more current ones posted this weekend.  If you would like to see a photo of any particular kid, please let me know.

We may have adult milkers for sale later this spring also.

What do you do if you receive word of an animal which has tested positive?  We had an animal test positive by WSU last year and removed the animal from the herd.  About two weeks later, we received a letter from WSU that their lab was having difficulties and the positive tests were not positive, but rather negative, so sorry for the wrong results.  This the problem the people in the northwest were having last year, the nice letter that said the lab was not giving accurate results but rather saying that animals were positive when they were not.  Dave Daubert

Dave,
I retest if I get word an animal has tested positive.  It's free at WSU if you question a positive  outcome.
I don't remove the positive animal, but separate it from the others until I have another test run...they recommend in 60 to 90 days, but I've sent in samples after a month and have them come back clear( or neg.)  I didn't start this practice until last year, because of discussion on a list.  Before that, I moved the positives into positive CAE group or culled them

I will not go back to using AGID as  an initial test for CAE....as a backup maybe.
From what I understand, a positive on an AGID, animal is positive ( or really low margin for error)...but that there  can be positive animals in herd, that are positive but won't test positive until antibody level for CAE gets to be a certain level.  ELISA will pick up those positive's sooner, hopefully before horizontal transmission occurs to negative pen mates.

Jeanne

Ebay will never ask you in an email for your password, or credit card information. The wording of the email is shown below, so you can recognize it if you see it. I have reported this to Ebay, and they will investigate.

Please be careful out there folks, there are lots of people on the Internet who are trying to steal information. I personally suggest the use of a firewall (Norton makes a good one for the home computer) and always being suspicious of anyone who asks for information like this.

Hi Trisha
I don't have you listed as a 2003 renewal. If you renewed at the conference,
this will not be accurate. The slips were to be sent to Ramona after the
conference but I don't know when she received them, and I don't have those
updates.

I'll check with Ramona today, and let you know. We'll post the current 2003
list after we talk to her. I have all the renewals in the database up through
the later part of January.
Ginny
