You might check with  your host, Chris, and see what they offer.  Some are offering SiteExpress, or something similar, that makes managing your site pretty easy.

A CMS is one of the trickiest things to deal with - especially if you
care about the code, accessibility and usability (of both the system
and what it exports).

Using weblog tools like MT, TextPattern, WordPress, etc... are great
but require a lot of messing with if you want to offer it as a true
CMS instead of a blog. I've personally used MT for quite a few sites
and it works great but not for everything.

I use movable type for my personal blog, and wordpress for my work
blog. Most of the rest of my work site is hand-coded/managed as it
has yet to grow to a size where I feel the need for a CMS. I like
them both, and on a user-level don't really have a preference. MT is
rather better designed under-the-hood and its plugin architecture is
fantastic.

I haven't yet found a high-powered CMS that I'm fully happy with and
(like so many others) tend to code my own. My current framework isn't
really ready to be shared.

James,

I'm just trying to manage my own website and use it to easily update
my portfolio (which includes images and text).

My only prerequisites is that it should be free and open source.

I notice you used moveable type.

Some additional sore points come up if the content providers are used to
having full access to the page source. It can be difficult to explain to
someone why they're using Contribute if they've always used Dreamweaver
before. The answer usually comes down to "I don't want you screwing around
with the navigation" or "I don't want to let you add ridiculous amounts of
Flash or giant images where they don't belong" but that's not something the
client usually wants to hear.

I also use Macromedia Contribute. You can download a free 45 day trial
on the macromedia website, and it's around 150 for the software. But
it's nice because you can then charge the client for a simple training
session if needed. I've also typed up a simple tutorial which I give
to clients when they purchase it.

Do you have to use PHP for this? If you're working within one page it
would seem like javascript would be most appropriate. You may want to
have a fallback for non-JS users, but they're few and far between
these days, particularly for something of that sort.

If you were happy to use javascript but still wanted PHP doing the
calculations you could use XMLHttpRequest to have javascript call a
PHP script to do the processing and return results, but that's
probably overly complex.

I would say to write your results to a MySQL database and pull the
results on the start page. When they click submit and go to the next
page, it updates the records and each page is updated as they are
both looking at the same data.

You could also do this by writing to text files but would limit you
for future growth.

Hope that helps.

It shouldn't be too bad. I suggest you do the following:

Find an already existing php script
(http://www.scriptsbank.com/PHP_Scripts/Tests_and_Quizzes/)

It is possible to do with php.
