For our first meeting of 2008 Refresh Detroit will be partnering with
the Michigan Usability Professionals and speaker/usability expert Dave
Mitropoulos-Rundus.

Subject:

Live Website Usability Evaluations:
Branding, Messsage, Content, and Usability.

Commercial web sites wither or thrive based on their usability, upon
the translation of brand image to the web site, and the clarity of
their marketing message. But what about web sites for non-profit
organizations? Whether organizing volunteers, educating people, or
gathering donations... for the non-profit web site, usability,
branding, message, and content matter!

Come and experience Dave Mitropoulos-Rundus conducting evaluations on
a number of non-profit web sites that have been submitted by
attendees. This session provides you with a rare opportunity to see it
live, experience the interactions with the stakeholders and designers,
and, time and bandwidth permitting, discuss YOUR site directly with
Dave.
Time, Date, Location:

This meeting will be on January 30th, 2008, from 6-8:30 pm at the
Perficient office in Livonia.

Please RSVP to events@.... Also, if you are interesting in
submitting your non-profit website, please send a separate message to

Price

Because we are teaming up with MIUPA there will be a fee, but it will
be worth it!

When: Wednesday, February 27th 2008, 6:30 - 8:00

Speaker: Brian Reindel, Software Engineer at Niche Retail.
Abstract

The advent and popularity of JavaScript libraries has caused front-end
programming paradigms to change drastically. Design patterns are
emerging, object-oriented concepts are common place, and the line
between client-side scripting and server-side scripting is beginning
to blur.

Brian will be reviewing some of the techniques inherent to these
libraries so that you can better understand how to build custom
functionality of your own, while taking into account best practices.
Some of the sub-topics to be included will be namespacing, anonymous
function execution, the dollar sign selector, variable arguments,
callback functions and shorthand.
Brian Reindel's Biography

Brian Reindel is a software engineer, currently employed with Niche
Retail, LLC, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He graduated from Oakland
University in 1999 with a BA, Journalism, and has been toying
professionally with Web development technologies for almost a decade.

Brian's language of choice is Java, but he gets dirty on occasion with
Ruby on Rails and LAMP as a solution stack. The majority of his
career, however, has been spent on the front-end, developing Web pages
with XHTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Although he still dreams of writing full-time in the future, Brian is
immersed in the world of software development, and enjoys the
challenge of learning new technologies.

ABSTRACT

What can you do when conversion rate is flat? TechSmith is a trialware
company by nature, so measuring how many people download, try and
actually purchase our software is the best measure of conversion and
success.

We know that the thousands â€" dare I say millions of users who own
SnagIt can’t live without it and tell us how it has changed the way
they communicate with people. So what were we missing, why were we not
getting the conversion rate we wanted? Learn about how we focused on
the user experience, what we did, and how the changes impacted the
conversion rate.

WHO WE ARE

We are proud to be a part of Refreshing Cities, the web design
movement promoting the spread of usability, accessibility, and web
standards. With a publishing medium as infant and chaotic as the
internet, the industry can only reach its full potential if we band
together and strive for excellence.

Refresh Detroit aims to create an environment of “learning through
each other†in the Michigan area. What is in the future of Refresh
Detroit? Published documents, conferences, seminars, and workshops. By
promoting web standards, by furthering each other, we can further
ourselves.

Meaningful Play 2008 is an interdisciplinary academic conference that explores
the
potential of games to entertain, inform, educate, and persuade in meaningful
ways.

The conference takes place October 9 - October 11 in East Lansing, Michigan USA
and is
hosted by Michigan State University.

The conference is for game designers, researchers, and students. The two primary
themes
of the conference are "exploring meaningful applications of games" and "issues
in
designing meaningful play". The first theme includes an examination of games (of
all
types) from primarily an academic research perspective. The second theme focuses
on
much more practical knowledge from the front-line of actual design, development,
and
use of games for meaningful purposes.

The conference includes thought-provoking keynotes from leaders in academia and
industry, peer-reviewed paper presentations, panel sessions (including academic
and
industry discussions), roundtable discussions, an exciting poster session, and
an
exhibition of games.

The final keynote line-up for Meaningful Play 2008 includes:
* Richard Hilleman, Chief Creative Office, Electronic Arts
* Ian Bogost, Associate Professor at the Georgia Tech and Founding Partner at
Persuasive Games LLC
* Leigh Anne Cappello, Vice President and Play Futurist with the Future Now
division of
Hasbro
* Ute Ritterfeld, Professor for Media Psychology at VU University Amsterdam and
co-
founded the Center for Advanced Media Research Amsterdam (CAMeRA@VU)
* Nick Fortugno, co-founder and President of Rebel Monkey
* Tracy Fullerton, Associate Professor in the Interactive Media Division of the
USC
School of Cinematic Arts and Director of the Electronic Arts Game Innovation Lab

The early registration for the conference ends September 8, 2008.

Using a combination of presentations and demonstrations with products
ranging from alarm clocks to speeding cars to the high tech hands free
voice activated SYNCH that was jointly developed by Ford and
Microsoft, attendees will walk away with a clear understanding of the

lot of sense unless you follow the right people/push out relevant
information. It's such a great tool for both pr/marketing and finding
great tips and information. Think of it as mini-blogging.

Twitter is for following people you want to know, as Facebook is for
following those you already know.

If you got to summize.com and type in keywords that are relevant to
your interests, you can find people to follow with similar interests.
Generally when you do this, they will follow you back.

I use a few tools to make it easier. Splitweet.com lets you manage
multiple accounts - some other great tools are tweetdeck and twirl.

Some good people to follow are:
@jack, @ev, @davemorin, @zappos, @apple_news, @zeldman, @balanon,
@ScottMonty, @MCHammer, @prchannel  ....

Hope this helps a little!

Join us on Wednesday, March 25, 2009 when Noel Jackson of Automattic,
Inc. <http://www.automattic.com/> (known for their WordPress
<http://www.wordpress.com/> and Akismet <http://akismet.com/>
projects) will discuss the differences between print and web design.

What separates print and web in the design community? What do designers
need to know to bridge the gap between print and the web? What
constraints do web designers need to understand?

We're thrilled that Noel will be presenting our first
"design-focused" topic at Refresh Detroit!

Noel will discuss:

     * The differences between print and web design.
     * What should you be concerned about, and what should the browser
deal with?
     * Pixel perfection: Legend or fallacy?
     * Color profiles, your screen vs. theirs.
     * Variables introduced by machine and human that make web design a
unique mix of science and art.

Background
Noel Jackson is an übergeek, designer, and developer. Pulled from the
depths of freelance design, he now works for Automattic, Inc. He loves
the internet and dreams in HTML quite frequently. A self-proclaimed
polymath, Noel was once a secret agent, fashion photographer, and ran a
successful post-production studio in NYC.

When not pushing pixels and babbling about regexes, he's probably
listening to music (300 LPs and 250 gigs in all), DJing, or creating
something (generative art is a favorite as of late). He lives in Detroit
with his beautiful wife Stephanie, a fish named Hiro, and a chinchilla
named Elvis.

Where: Washtenaw Community College <http://www.wccnet.edu/> , Ann Arbor,
Michigan. We will be meeting in Room 150 at the Morris Lawrence Building
(map
