Mendulang Potensi "Logam Mulia" Masa Depan

Indonesia memiliki potensi logam tanah jarang lumayan besar.

Cadangan LTJ Cina kini diperkirakan mencapai 36% LTJ dunia. Belakangan, Cina rupanya mengurangi ekspor komoditas logam jarangnya hingga 54%. Sebelumnya, ekspor logam jarang Cina mencapai 65.000 ton per tahun.

Menurut kalkulasi ESDM, Indonesia memiliki potensi sumber daya sekitar 2.715 ton.

''Mereka mulai menjadi pengekspor LTJ,'' kata Sukhyar.

Sang Mineral Langka Multiguna

Nanotechnology and AFM: Going hand in hand
NANOTEC and LMS Instrument acknowledging the importance of AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) to nanotechnology development recently organized a workshop on “Advanced Materials characterization by AFM Technique†to provide up date information on the advancement of AFM technology. The speaker was Dr. Thomas Henze. Attending the workshop were representatives from private sector and research institutions.

It is not possible to talk about nanotechnology development without mentioning AFM (Atomic Force Microscopy) as the two are like fork and spoon ie, they go hand in hand. AFM has become the most widely used tool for imaging, measuring and manipulating matter at the nanoscale and in turn has inspired a variety of other scanning probe techniques. Some people may argue that AFM helps to spear head the advancement of nanotechnology we know today. Others may think the opposite. Whatever the case, they are inseparable.
Originally AFM was used to image the topography of surfaces, but by modifying the tip it is possible to measure other quantities (for example, electric and magnetic properties, chemical potentials, friction and so on), and also to perform various types of spectroscopy and analysis.

The Nano Characterization Lab at NANOTEC uses AFM to provide testing and nano analysis services for both internal and external clients. To date, over 6000 technical testing services has been performed by the lab.

Public seminar on Nano Sensors at INTERMACH 2012
NANOTEC and the organizer of INTERMACH 2012 held a special public forum on Nano Sensor to promote awareness to the importance of sensor development for industrial applications.

“We are surrounded by sensors and sensing networks that monitor a large amount of parameters for the sole purpose of enhancing our safety and quality of life†said Dr. Sirasak Teparkum, Deputy Executive Director at NANOTEC. “Industrial sector such as automotive, medical, entertainment, food, and security are using sensors to enhance the efficiency of their products. The addition of nanotechnology in sensor development is helping to make smarter sensors and in many ways more compact in size. This helps to increase the application of sensors in other sectors where sensors’ size is critical. The nano sensor research activity at NANOTEC is to build local capabilities that are suitable and appropriate for industrial useâ€.

The global sensor market is expected to reach US$ 76.7 Billion by 2017. Technological refinement in terms of improved efficiency and performance will be key to driving the growth of sensor applications.
“The electronic sensor research program at NANOTEC originated as an idea to create a complete smart facial sensing system that covers the eyes, ears, tongue, and nose†said Dr. Jedsada Manyam of NANOTEC NanoMolecular Sensor Lab. “We have performed contract research on areas related to money security. Since then, the program has diversified to include developing electronic eyes for the paint industry which has an average market forecast growth of over 9% per year. The development of sensors capable of detecting different shades of color is important for both the paint industry. It is also being adapted for the food industryâ€.

In addition to Dr. Sirasak and Dr. Jedsada, Dr. Sirapat Pratontep of King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMUTL) also gave a talk on the development of “Electronic Nose†which is a joint NANOTEC and KMUTL research collaboration.

Attending the forum were representatives from the private sector such as food and jewelry, and research institutions.

The private sector representatives’ interests range from seeking ways to maintain consistent taste, color, and smell of food related items. While the jewelry people were interested in trying to maintain consistent jewelry color shades for the European market.

The speakers also took time to provide hands-on demonstration on the various nano sensor prototypes which was beneficial for the participants understanding of sensor systems.

Scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, led by Seung-Wuk Lee, a faculty scientist in Berkeley Lab's Physical Biosciences Division and a UC Berkeley associate professor of bioengineering, have developed a way to generate power using harmless viruses that convert mechanical energy into electricity. The generator is the first to produce electricity by harnessing the piezoelectric properties of a biological material. The generator is made of the M13 bacteriophage, which only attacks bacteria and is benign to people. M13 has a length of 880 nm and a diameter of 6.6 nm. For use in the power generator it is coated with approximately 2700 charged proteins that enable the piezoelectric behavior. Being a virus M13 replicates itself by the millions within hours, so there's always a steady supply, it is easy to genetically engineer and large numbers of the rod-shaped viruses naturally orient themselves into well-ordered films. See the power generator in action here. The findings have been published May 13 as an advance online publication of Nature Nanotechnology. Read this and the 7 other very interesting news below.

NANO talk:     Applications of synchrotron in nanotechnologyâ€
NANOTEC researchers attended a NANO Talk session on “The application of synchrotron in nanotechnology†to better understand its application and explore ways to use synchrotron in their research activities. The speakers from Synchrotron Light Research Institute (SLRI) consisted of:

Dr. Supagorn Rugmai “Structural studies of nano materials with synchrotron lightâ€

Dr. Chanapa Khongmark and Dr. Chanan Euaruksakul “Photoemission electron microscopy with nano materialsâ€

“Many measurement techniques are available for studies of nano materials, with each specific technique giving specific information on the materials†said Dr. Supagorn. “At nano scale, the material properties are usually complicated due to the interplay of various effects, contributing from atomic, molecular and larger scale structures. Structural information is therefore particularly important in understanding properties of the materialsâ€.
Dr. Supagorn talk focused on three measurement techniques:

- Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS): a technique particularly useful for nano structural characterization. The technique can give information such as sizes and shapes of nano particles and molecular arrangement in soft materials,
- X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS): a exclusive synchrotron technique where information on local atomic environment can be obtained.
- Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM): a technique used to probe structures of surfaces. The technique can provide chemical and electronic information of surfaces with lateral resolution below 1 micron.

“Photoemission electron spectroscopy (PEEM) is suitable for measuring properties of materials as thin as one atomic or molecular layer†said Dr. Chanan. “When using electron beam as an illuminating source, it is also possible to obtain additional information via measurement known as low energy electron microscopy (LEEM)â€.

NANOTEC has been allocated the use of Beamline #5 at SLRI for research purpose. For information SLRI, please log on: http://www.slri.or.th/en/

NANO Talk is a monthly public forum organized by NANOTEC for researchers and visiting professors to exchange knowledge and be updated on technology trends. Visiting professors to Thailand are encouraged to participate. Please contact NANOTEC if you are interested in receiving updates or would like to recommend a speaker.

Dear Colleagues,   Unsubscribe - Receiving email nano_indonesia@...
Researchers, led by associate professor Thomas M. Crawford, at the University of South Carolina have demonstrated the application of magnetic recording methods to create complex materials by using individual nanoparticles as building blocks. Since current magnetic recording technology has a spatial resolution below 10 nm, it offers inexpensive and reprogrammable template generation possibilities that can be used to build large-scale materials containing precisely positioned nanoparticles. First the researchers coated a disk surface with a ferrofluid – a suspension of magnetic nanoparticles in a liquid. Nanoparticles are pulled to the surface by the force of the magnetic field that is emitted from individual "bits" on the disk. After the nanoparticles assemble, the fluid is removed and the disk surface is coated with an air-curable liquid polymer. Once cured, the solid polymer can be peeled from the disk to yield a transparent and flexible film containing the patterned nanoparticles. The results have been published in Nanotechnology. Read this and the 7 other very interesting news below.

Using chitosan core-shell nanoparticle for breast cancer treatment
Researchers at National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) have successfully developed a target drug delivery system using folate-conjugated pluronic F127/chitosan core-shell nanoparticles to deliver doxorubicin (DOX) to target cancer cells focusing on breast cancer.

“DOX is one of the most commonly used chemotherapeutic agents for cancer treatment including breast cancer. However, DOX is also considered a poor soluble drug that is toxic to healthy tissues†said Dr. Nuttaporn Pimpha, a NANOTEC researcher at Hybrid Nanostructure and Nanocomposite. “By using core-shell nanoparticles from folate-conjugated pluronic F127/chitosan we were able to develop a delivery vector that has greater targeting ability, chemical stability and lower cytotoxicityâ€.
As in many developing countries, cancer in Thailand is becoming a significant health problem. Cervix and breast cancer is the leading cause of death in Thai women. The only commercial DOX – encapsulated liposome available is Doxil. However, Doxil has a short half-life in microcirculation and is unstable in the blood stream. Hence there is a need to find a more controlled and stable DOX carrier system.

The researchers reported their work in a paper published by the Journal of Nanomaterials.

Jumlah publikasi ilmiah peneliti Indonesia, khususnya yang terindeks
secara internasional, teramat sangat rendah. Jika semua publikasi ilmiah

Kelompok
Keahlian Fisika Material Elektronik, FMIPA ITB, secara konsisten
menjalankan strategi ini walaupun tanpa didukung dana sponsor.

1) Tahun 2010 telah diselenggarakan The 3rd Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Symposium (NNSB2010) di Bandung. Makalah-makalah tersebut telah
dipublikasi di The American Institute of Physics Conference Proceedings
Volume 1284 (2010)

2) Tahun 2011 telah diselenggarakan The 4th Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Symposium (NNS2011) di Bali. Makalah-makalah tersebut telah dipublikasi
di The American Institute of Physics Conference Proceedings Volume 1415
(2011)

3) Tahun ini akan diselenggarakan Nanotechnology Applications in Energy &
Environment 2012 (NAEE2012) di Bandung tanggal 20-21 September 2012.
Makalah-makalah akan dipublikasi di MATERIALS SCIENCE FORUM.

4) Tahun 2013 akan diselenggarakan The 5th Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
Symposium (NNS2013) di Bali sekitar bulan September. Makalah-makalah

Organic Single-Crystal Light-Emitting Transistor Coupling with Optical Feedback Resonators

Satria Zulkarnaen Bisri, et al.

Organic light-emitting transistors (OLETs) are of great research interest because they combine the advantage of the active channel of a transistor that can control the luminescence of an in-situ light-emitting diode in the same device. Here we report a novel single-crystal OLET (SCLET) that is coupled with single crystal optical feedback resonators. The combination of single-crystal waveguides with native Fabry-Perot cavities, formed by parallel crystal edges, drastically lowers the threshold energy for spectral narrowing and non-linear intensity enhancement. We apply this structure to SCLETs and demonstrate the first fabrication of a SCLET with the optical feedback resonators.

Ambipolar field-effect transistors of random network carbon nanotubes are fabricated from an enriched dispersion utilizing a conjugated polymer as the selective purifying medium. The devices exhibit high mobility values for both holes and electrons (3 cm2/V·s) with a high on/off ratio (106). The performance demonstrates the effectiveness of this process to purify semiconducting nanotubes and to remove the residual polymer.

Selective purification of carbon nanotubes using conjugated polymers is utilized on page 6147 by Maria Antonietta Loi, Satria Zulkarnaen Bisri, and co-workers to fabricate high-performance ambipolar transistors. A device of drop-casted random-network nanotubes demonstrates high carrier mobilities and high on/off ratios for holes and electron accumulations. Together with the optical measurement results, the performance of the transistor indicates the purity of the nanotube dispersion with minimum residual polymer.
