Hello Michal,

Be careful with the Skystar USB 2 !
This new box is not available yet and I have not seen drivers for it.
Not all Technisat products use the Flexcop chipset !

"Skystar USB" uses flexcop but has USB1.1, this box cannot handle MSG
+ MetOp simultaniously ! This USB bus handles only up to 6 MB/s

"Skystar USB Plus" is USB2.0 but is a re-badged TechnoTrend connect
S2400 (does not use flexcop) and is not sold anymore.

"Skystar 2 PCI" is a 5V only PCI card (versions 2.3 up to 2.6), a new
3.3V and 5V PCI compatible V2.7 is announced. All use the flexcop but
3 different tuners are used !

"Skystar HD" is 3.3V and 5V PCI compatible but this is a re-badged
Technotrend Budget S3200, no flexcop and different drivers.

Have not seen PCIe receivers yet, professionals use DVB-S routers like
the Ipricot S500.

The DVBworld 2102 (and OEM versions like Dexatek DK5702 and Acorp
DS120) we tested does not use flexcop chipset. PID filtering is done
by the driver. Linux details can be found at
http://www.worlddvb.com/html/Linux%20driver%20link.htm

Greetings,
Arne van Belle

Yes, for now I've enabled
[EUMETSAT Data Channel*]

after I wrote the email, I've fixed the kernel start-up to create the
ramdisk. Right now no missing segments, but I'd wait a couple of
days to see if something goes wrong, for example when tonight the clean
sequence start which remove the 1 days old files.
In very brief I receive onto a temp 300MB ramdisk, then move the files into a
filesystem (lvm) which is exported via NFS 3.
On another server I do 'cp --update' the whole stuff via NFS, 2 times
per hour, then using xrit2pic create some images and animation.
I'll keep you posted.

E.

is USB 1.1 right? isn't that too slow for the reception of the large

Hi Michael,

I'm currently testing a P4 2Ghz with 700Mb RAM and SkyStar USB
receiver under debian etch, but still having many missing segments.
I do need to test other conf., ex ramdisk in download, no NFS, NFS
v4, stripe disk etc.
As soon as I've something really working I'll post here my
configuration, in the meantime if you have some questions please let me
know.

Michal, the products tested by GEO members include:

   http://www.worlddvb.com/product/htm/usbs.htm

and

The DVBWorld box should soon be available from the GEO Shop - ask them:

Siemens Eco 100 using a PCI SkyStar2 card. The kernel module/driver
for the card is b2c2-flexcop-pci.ko and I see that b2c2-flexcop-usb.ko

Michal,

We have had good results from the Dexatek (and DVB World) USB boxes, as I
describe here:

   http://www.david-taylor.myby.co.uk/wxsat/Dexatek/index.htm

I have only tested with Windows XP and Vista, but Linux drivers are, I
believe, available.

hi,

we are about, to set up new reception computers (they are already
selected), but they do not have any PCI slots...

currently we are using pentamedia cards, but these cards are not
usable anymore, because of the slot and the other hand there weren't
driver updates since 2002, or something like that...

our new hardware (already ordered) has 2 PCIe slots, so PCIe cards are
an option, or some ext. USB boxes too... i need some advises which
cards or usb boxes are good for this task, the whole thing will be run
under linux...

the eumetsat homepage, does not recommend any PCIe cards which
actually sucks, because as time goes on, the PCI slot will probably
disasspear completly...

thx in advance

Thanks John. I will try my best in this regard. I think even India
sends DVB data for us (common people) to receive them. I tried
contacting their email id given in their website but it is bouncing.

Yes, perhaps things are more iced-up than usual, or perhaps a comms link
is down or intermittent. I think the data is sent from Fairbanks (or
wherever) to EUMETSAT as a single chunk, and if it's missed, they "know"
the next chunk will be along in 100 minutes time. I've seen quite a few
reports of comms problems within NOAA recently. Mind you, one would have
thought that missing data due to a comms problem could simply be
resent....

Certainly more mssing data than we have been used to.

Hi Ian,
Certainly a lot of missed segments from NOAA GAC. NOAA AVHRR seems
unaffected. What seems strange is that each message indicates when
normal service will resume. Maybe a ground station problem?

Over the last three days or so the above data and associated met. products
has been extremely erratic. We appear to be in a situation where we get one
orbit and then miss one or two. Although I haven't counted I am sure the
message notifications over the last few days are well over 50.

I can only assume that the problem is at the NOAA end. Appears to have
stopped again.

xrit2pic release 2008.01 is now available:

http://www.alblas.demon.nl/wsat/software/soft_msg.html

The commandline xrit2pic is also updated (doesn't need GTK).

New features:

     * Polar pics in several mappings (Mercator, Plate Carree, Polar
       north and south)
     * Menu item in main window "View->lon_lat" to enable lon/lat lines
       in each preview.
     * Command line: It is possible now to define your own special
       composed pictures, like dust/airmass.

Thanks Ian - a reboot of the receiver PC fixed it. Very deceptive
because reception stopped very neatly on the last sequence before
noon. I had changed nothing, so I guess it was a glitch in the Rx PC
only.

Robert,
No problem here HRIT data coming in normally. Looks like the problem is at
your end -- hope you resolve it soon.

Regards
Ian.

I must have missed an important message because I have no HRIT images
after 1145. I have checked on the parallel data to see if we had gone
over to that, but nothing there either.

John, technically correct. Businesswise, there could be a change. The news
have it here these days that German Telekom, the owners of T-Systems

the
software products we use, it is an interesting move.

Hello Ulrich,

Thanks for that.
It's good to know that not only UK firms are being bought out by foreign
firms.
It is a bit of a sore point here in the UK.

Well, something else to consider; I think EUMETSAT are possibly going out to
tender this year for the EUMETCast uplink services.

So, it might not be Deutsche Telekom in the future as it is now?
And, as you say T-Systems is part of Deutsche Telekom.

Watch the 'pink T?'

Regards,
John.

Hello Omkar,

This sounds very encouraging - you seem to have a good start.

I had no response from contacting CMS directly several times for information
as to the requirements for FengYunCast.
I also had no response from contacting the Group on Earth Observation
several times who are setting up GEONETCast, regarding information as to
software
requirements and data access policy.
And, I contacted AsiaSat a couple of times with no response.

Both the above over a 6 month period last year.

I think the only thing I can suggest at the moment is to ask Ops at EUMETSAT
if they might know of suppliers for this service.

It [GEONETCast] is a worldwide (global) system for the distribution of
metrological data of which EUMETSAT, CMA NOAA and JMA(?) are/will be data
providers.
One would have thought there would be one standard set of software for the
reception of the data.
EUMETSAT of course use T-Systems, NOAA have another propriety brand and
China has another.
Since all systems use the DVB standard perhaps all these 'reception
softwares are compatable?
And, possibly interchangeable?

As I said trying to get any information on FengYunCast has been a nightmare.

I would be very interested to hear how you get on as we have a member in SA
receiving C-band EUMETCast-Africa.

Regards,
John.

David,
Thanks for your thoughts. I would be only too pleased to raise the issue on
the SatSignal group to see what people think. Clearly with the additional
GOES and MTSAT-1R data you have run out of space.

Regards
Ian.
