As no-one else has offered, I have a GRIB Viewer program:

   http://www.satsignal.eu/software/grib-viewer.htm

for Windows which may be able to read the file, or be updated to read the
file.

Have just increased Ram disc to 125mb. My current file data base is set
to 83500000.
Can I please be advised what new size file data base that I should
amend this to as I am not too certain of my facts.
Thanks, David Tyler

David, I would change your file data base size to 130000000.

Hope that helps.

Agreed, Ian.

Why, David? Because 125 MB * 1024 * 1024 = 131,072,000 bytes, and
131,000,000 is just a little less. Don't type the commas, by the way -
I'm just using them for clarity.

Cheers,
David

Hi, Thilo.

There is an article about using a RAMdisk, and the changes required in the
TelliCast software here:

   http://www.satsignal.eu/wxsat/atovs/RAMdisk.pdf

Perhaps it will help? What error message do you get?

Have found RAMdisk will not run for telecast following XP Service
Pack 3 update. ARsoft don't seem to have a newer version of their
software which might overcome problem. Have used a USB memory stick
and told the O/S to assign Z as its drive letter having deleted the
RAM drive first. All seems to be working again now that Telecast can
find drive Z again. Hope this is of help. Have been burning the
midnight oil in desperation! Dave.

Hi,

TelliCast and RamDisk seem to have no hit. The Eumetsat engineers
say to my problem with starting TelliCast automatically while booting:

"If he can wait for the new Tellicast client, this will not need a RAM
disk and so the problem will disappear. -- The new Tellicast will be
launched in May."

Cheers,
Werner.

Hi All,
Anyone else having problems with SP3?
I have a 3 PC system and a laptop. They all run either XP Home or Pro.
I updated the laptop, Processing PC (David Taylor's software) and my
general use PC without a hitch.
Confident I therefore updated the Rx only PC.
Aaagh!
It will only load in safe mode.
Have removed QSoft Ramdisk and now Tellicast but can't get it to start.
Any bright ideas welcome or it will be a complete reinstall as I didn't
have system restore turned on. :-(
Cheers

According to the following address dated 30 April MS has delayed the
relese of XP SP3 due to a bug. Perhaps you have downloaded since that
date. I have not been able to download from the Microsoft web site.

I downloaded it, as recommended by Microsoft, as an update sent to my
computer a few days ago.
Presumably Microsoft would not have sent it if they were still restricting
it.

I have had no problems since updating although as I said I only have XP
in my 'receive' computer so I do considerably less on that one than my main
processing one. Nevertheless I go online, load CDs occasionally, use
explorer, have Norton 2008 and of course Tellique and the DVB program.

Alan, I wonder if your problem is a driver conflict. Might be worth
running the System Configuration Utility and trying selective start ups to
see if you can identify the culprit. Probably worth a try before the more
onerous complete re-install.

Hope you get it sorted.

Regards
Douglas.

Does your rx pc use an AMD processor if so this link will be of interest

Apparently there is a bug in the official public release of sp3 which causes
problems with
pc's with AMD processors.

Last night I update my WindowsXP pro to service pack 3. Tellicast and
RAMdisk both load, but quite often the tellicast icon on the tray
becomes red (connect failed). Apparently there isn't any increase of
missed data packets and no perceptible degradation of image's quality,
nor any relation to CPU usage.

Best Regards

Thanks Everyone.
There are two problem scenarios.
The first is an HP PC with AMD chip (Just what I have) And the other
seems to be related to an Asus motherboard.
Trying to find a work round.

Alan,
QSoft RAMdisk now installed and everything working perfectly again,
thank you. My PC uses an AMD chip so don't think SP3 has problems
with this. Did have a problem with Tellecast and other tray Icons
not appearing following boot but found AVG antivirus was taking up
lots of boot time so uninstalled it and installed Norton antivirus
instead - boots much faster now, Icons always there and correct
colour. Hope this is of help to others. Good luck. Dave.

Hi Alan,

Yes, that was probably going to be the answer all along.
I never auto-update. I look at what it is allegedly fixing/improving and see if
I need it.

mmmhh - 5 PC's here, all different, with AMD processors and no problems,
none on the 150 PC's at work either - all those have AMD processors
too..

And if you read that article, bear in mind I'm typing this message on an
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe motherboard, but then again, I didn't install the
wrong drivers, on that or any other PC ;)

Hi Steve,
Further reading indicates a problem - quite widespread - with AMD
processors in HP PC's and maybe other OEM's. It seems HP PC's have an
Intel driver 'intelppm.sys' that is obviously not required by AMD
processors causing HP computers to continuously reboot. This was the
problem I had, solved by uninstalling SP3.
Cheers
Alan

Possibly better solved just by uninstalling 'intelppm.sys', rather than
the whole service pack.

Easy to do by booting from XP cd, picking repair command line option,
cd c:\windows
then
dir /s intelppm*.*

then delete all instances. System should then boot.

Not tried it, haven't a system it affected.

Tried that Steve, didn't work. So uninstalled SP3 'til I've got more
time to sort it out.

Mustn't have got all instances of it, if it isn't there it cant run :)

Other fix is

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Processor

Or

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Intelppm

And changing the 'Start' value to '4'.

BTW - intelppm problem was reported with SP2!

Microsoft, rightly, IMO, don't consider it a bug, it should never have
been installed by the OEM in the first place on an AMD machine.

Hi,
Now that you have sorted out which systems the SP3 gives problems
with, here are a couple of useful links regarding the relative
performance of XP/SP3 and XP/SP2, also with Vista with and without SP1.
The general feeling seems to be that there is overall a negligible
performance difference between SP3 and SP2, but your mileage may differ
of course depending on the software being run. That's why I included the
games link.
