Hello everyone,
I work for a medium-sized corporation in Silicon Valley in the automation
industry. We use Microsoft Dynamics GP as our accounting, sales, and supply
chain management software. This software has been adequate for our needs, but it
does have some shortcomings. One issue we have been struggling with is how to
manage inventory that is not held onsite at our factory. Has anyone else had any
experience with offsite inventory management and tracking and can offer any
tips, add-ons, or what not? Thanks sincerely.

Hello Mike,
I can say with some confidence that installing
VSTS 2010 Beta will not affect your existing VSTS 2005 installation but
if your not sure you should read the install guide first which will definitely
list co-existence issues with existing installations if any. My advice
to you would be to install VSTS 2010 on a virtual machine using Microsoft
Virtual PC. Though it does require more RAM on your machine since it shares
your host machines RAM but its the best way to evaluate beta or even release
versions of products. Since it will run as a separate machine on your host
machine, your current configurations/installations will not be disturbed.

download link for Microsoft Virtual PC (VPC) is: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=28C97D22-6EB8-4A09-A7F7-F6C7A1F000B5&displaylang=en

Hi Uzair,
That seems like a wonderful idea. However,
I have two concerns:
1) VSTS 2005 for Development
is currently on my system, will it get overwritten?
2) My PC has a 1.8GB
CPU (Celeron) w/ 1 GB of DDR SDRAM. Is that enough to handle VSTS
2010? Also, once VSTS 2010s trial period expires then I will have to buy
it, and that can be pretty expensive.
Please let me know what your opinion is in
regard to these concerns.
Thanks,
Mike

Hello Mike, first of all who told you that you can
not run Team System Development and Test Edition edition on the same machine??
I have deployed these two couple of times on the same machine and never
got an issue and never heard of it either, so kindly verify this first
and then look for other testing tools. These two complement each other
so how can they have compatibility issues, you can make unit tests using
Developer Edition and then manage these in a Test List using Test Edition.
You should also probably evaluate the Beta 1 of VSTS 2010 which is available
for download as an installer and a VPC image as well. VSTS 2010 has extensive
testing features much more than the current version.

I'm seeking some suggestions in regard to a problem I am
trying to solve.
I have Visual Studio Team System 2005 for developers on my home system,
and I would like to have Team System 2005 for Testers on my system also.
However, from what I remember you can't mix the two.
My objective is to be able to design Web tests to test the presentation
logic in a Web application. I already have the ability to run unit tests
using what I have.
I would also like to be able to schedule these tests to run on a daily
basis as a regression test.
So, this is a combination of White Box and Black Box testing.
If there are any FREE add-ons that will meet my objective, that would be
great.

Thank you.
1. Ribbonsin browser with SharePoint. They are contextual, and can be changed. In-browser
Editing everywhere, and heavy use of Wiki backbone is evident on UI/web-part
pages! Silverlight web-part is now available, just link to Silverlight
source.
2. Rich
theming support. Inherit themes from Office docs. Quickly change the
look-and-feel of your site based on Office theme. Multiple browser support,
including mobile experience!
3. Visio
Services: Introduction of Visio Services. Great browser experience
for Visio docs, including dynamic updates for docs connected to external
data.
4. SharePoint
Designer: Better UI, greater functionality! Enhancements to workflows,
modelling and content-type management. Also now you can work with LoB Entities
right in the client.
5. Business
Connectivity Services: (“evolution” of Business Data Catalog) Connect
LoB apps, services and data to your UI and PS solutions. Great use case
shown where you quickly build UI, for your data.
6. Rich
Media is seemingly everywhere with Silverlight, great Office client
support, and for example quick video editing in PowerPoint. Much more to
come on this one…
IT Professionals
1. Central
Administration: Cleaner UI, with Ribbon-based commands. Health Monitoring
is now integrated experience. Don’t forget SP is now first class citizen
of PowerShell!
2. Best
Practices Analyzer: Periodic analysis with integrated Best Practices Analyzer!
Various rules available out of the box, but is extensible and new ones
can be built. Issues identified can either be acted upon in UI, or can
be self fixed by analyzer.
3. Usage
Reporting and Logging: Now there is a new Logging database (thank you)
to log usage and health data. They promise that it will be fully documented
for you to build your custom reports. Nice. You’ll have better object
model to allow for custom logging in same database! I’m liking this…
4. List
Throttling: This one is great for large customers. Encourage best practices
with messaging about large lists and thresholds, as they cap. I notice
that cap on items in View is now ~5000, on a list that can potentially
be having millions of items!!!
5. Unattached
content database recovery by temporarily mounting it to farm, and browsing
the content. Forget your recovery farm.
6. Visual
Upgrade: Upgrade your farm/sites, yet retain look of SP 2007. At choice
upgrade the site visually, and hence enabling (unlocking) remaining UI-dependent
features with SP 2010 look. You can also do that temporarily. Well, for
some farms, this is certainly a useful feature – especially when IT is
ahead of the curve and users have adoption or business dependencies. I
wonder how this will work with custom themes people have in SP 2007. Nevertheless,
I like it much.
Developers
1. Visual
Studio 2010 with SharePoint. First class development experience is
promised. I’ll be conservative on this one, until I get to play with!
I like the approach with Visual Web-Part designer surface.
2. LINQ
to SharePoint. Strongly typed access to your data in SP is a great
welcome with all its goodness.
3. Developer
Dashboard on SP: A small icon link to enable the dashboard, like in-page
tracing with ASP.NET but with greater detail about behind-the-scene queries
and objects, DB calls etc. You can even the actual SQL query or sProc call.
Nice – I see ton of time being saved, and greater developer understanding
building about the platform. Excellent transparency for all.
4. Business
Connectivity Services: Read/Write access is finally here. Virtually
the same experience as for inherent Lists, as “External Lists” become
integrated in UI and experience. Both SP 2010 and Office is promised to
consume external data in rich ways, including support in SP Designer and
Visual Studio. (Not to forget LINQ for external data!)
5. Client-side
Object Model: Not this is great, my imagination is running wild! Runs
on users machine, client OM can be SP data on client-side via JavaScript,
.NET, or through Silverlight! Loving it now!!!
SharePoint Team has confirmed
launch of limited access Tech Preview,
and also a public Beta is confirmed for later in the year. If you can make
it, SharePoint Conference 2009 is the best place to be to learn all about
SharePoint 2010. I hope SharePoint team is reading and let all die-hard
evaluators have more than a sneak peek with Tech Preview! ;-)
Great Work, and its just scratching
of the surface. Enjoy… more to come.

Now that Silverlight 3 is out, where do you
start? From: http://silverlight.net/getstarted/ Get Started Building Silverlight 3 Applications 1. Install
the developer tools for Silverlight. If you don't have Visual Web Developer,
download both using Web
Platform Installer. This will install the SDK,
developer runtimes, and Visual Studio project templates. You can optionally
download
the tools directly for offline installation.
For additional information, read the Overviewand the Silverlight
3 Release Notes. 2. Install
Microsoft Expression Blend 3 + SketchFlow RC Expression Blend 3 RC allows designers to graphically create UI’s for
Silverlight 3 applications. 3. Install
Deep Zoom Composer This tool allows you to prepare your images for use with the Deep Zoom
feature in Silverlight 3. 4. Download
Silverlight Toolkit This Toolkit is a Microsoft project containing Silverlight controls, components
and utilities that can be downloaded and used in your Silverlight applications.
It includes full source code, samples and tests.
Out of Browser Support
Users can run a Silverlight 3 application
in the browser or run it directly from the desktop even when they’re not
connected to the Internet. This supports several sync scenarios that
can be useful when a connection isn’t always available.
Enhanced Graphics Support
New features include GPU acceleration,
perspective 3D support, bitmap and pixel APIs for dynamically generating
images, videos, etc. Animations can also be eased in and out and
perform many other cool effects. Pixel shaders allow objects to have
different effects applied to them such as shadows and blurs.
New Controls
Silverlight 3 provides many new controls
that can be used to build solid line of business (LOB) applications. Controls
can be bound to each other using element to element binding and validation
can also be perform more easily. Several new controls are also available
in the Silverlight 3 toolkit released by Microsoft.
Better Navigation
Navigating between Silverlight “pages”
is now built in along with better search engine optimization (SEO) support
and deep linking.
Enhanced TextRendering
One knock against Silverlight 2 was that
text didn’t render as clearly as it should in some situations. Silverlight
3 includes a major update to the text rendering engine. Text renders
very crisply now.
Enhanced Styles
Silverlight 3 provides merged dictionary
support allowing multiple style files to be merged into an application
(similar to how a standard web application can use multiple CSS files).
This allows themes and other styles to be switched much more easily.
Styles can also be based on other styles (similar to inheritance
in OO languages).
Faster Transfer of Data
Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)
support was available in Silverlight 2 but Silverlight 3 now adds support
for binary XML serialization which allows data to be transferred between
a Silverlight application and a WCF service much faster than before.
Assembly Caching
Silverlight 3 allows developers to store
assemblies on a central company server and Silverlight 3 applications can
then download them as needed rather than downloading everything up front
in a single .xap file. This can significantly speed-up application
load times.
Enhanced Networking Support
A new client networking (ClientHttp) stack
is available that supports more verbs than simply GET/POST. Applications
that fully leverage REST APIs will benefit from this new feature.
HD Media Support
Silverlight 3 includes support for GPU
acceleration (as mentioned earlier) as well as 1080p HD videos to be played
over the web. New codec support for H.264, AAC audio and MPEG-4 content
is also included. If you need to provide media solutions then Silverlight
covers all of the major scenarios now.
Some other changes to Visual Studio and
Silverlight applications in general:
· The
Visual Studio 2008 designer has been removed for Silverlight 3 applications.
A lot of developers turned it off anyway so all of the dev efforts
have gone into the designer that’ll be available in Visual Studio 2010.
Expression Blend 3 can also be used of course.
· The
Silverlight ASP.NET server control isn’t used now. It simply emitted
the object and associated params tags anyway.
Expression
Blend 3 has also been released
(currently a release candidate) along with a new feature called SketchFlow.
SketchFlow allows application prototypes and mockups to be created
more easily in order to get customer feedback…very cool if you haven’t
seen it. Although I rarely used Blend for coding previously, it now
includes code intellisense which is a nice feature to have and adds support
for behaviors, importing Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator files and integrating
sample data into applications.

I don’t believe I ever received a response in regard to my concern
about installing beta VS software on my home system. I have VS 2005 on my system
now, and I am concerned about VS 2010 overwriting some critical files that are
necessary to run VS 2005.
Now you may ask, why should you be concerned? The reason is
because VS 2005 may longer function when I have to go back to it.
Why would I have to go back to it? Because when the beta runs
out, I will have to buy VS 2010, and I can’t afford to buy the tester and
developer packages.
Suggestions and opinions are welcome.

I have a mandatory field in my list, which must be entered while
creating a list item. At the time of edit, i don't want the users to
modify the mandatory field and so I am disabling the field at load
time in EditForm.aspx
The code looks something like this,
function runOnLoad(){
// Disabling Case ID
var CaseID = getTagFromIdentifierAndTitle("INPUT","TextField","Case
ID");
CaseID.disabled = true;
return true;
}
_spBodyOnLoadFunctionNames.push("runOnLoad");
The above code works and makes the "CaseID" field disabled during load
time. After editing other fields, when I click "Ok" to save, It
prompts me to enter some value for CaseID field, while the field is
disabled and I am not able to enter anything as well.
Initially when EditForm.aspx loaded, the CaseID field which was
disabled, had the value which i entered at the time of new item
creation, but it was greyed out. But after clicking "ok" , the value
in the field disapears and prompts me to enter some value for that
field.
Such issues comes only for a field if it is set to be mandatory and
doesn't arise if the field isn't mandatory to be populated.
Some one please help me out.

So, this is a combination of White Box and Black Box testing.
If there are any FREE add-ons that will meet my objective, that would be
great.

There is Team System For Developers, and then there is Team
System for Testers. I need access to the test tools in Team System For Testers
in Team System For Developers because I have Team System For Developers on my
system.
I not only want to do unit tests, but I would also like to do some
preliminary system tests as well.
Does anybody know where I can get these test tools so that I can
integrate them into my environment?

I'm seeking some suggestions in regard to a
problem I am trying to solve.
I have Visual Studio Team System 2005 for developers on my home system, and I
would like to have Team System 2005 for Testers on my system also. However,
from what I remember you can't mix the two.
My objective is to be able to design Web tests to test the presentation logic
in a Web application. I already have the ability to run unit tests using what
I have.
I would also like to be able to schedule these tests to run on a daily basis
as a regression test.
So, this is a combination of White Box and Black Box testing.
If there are any FREE add-ons that will meet my objective, that would be

We’ve heard loud and clear that you want system
requirements information as early as possible to assist in your budgeting
and planning, so today we’re happy to announce (and confirm) some preliminary
system requirements for SharePoint Server 2010:
1. SharePoint
Server 2010 will be 64-bit only.
2. SharePoint
Server 2010 will require 64-bit Windows Server 2008 or 64-bit Windows Server
2008 R2.
3. SharePoint
Server 2010 will require 64-bit SQL Server 2008 or 64-bit SQL Server 2005.
In addition to the requirements listed above we also wanted
to share with you some preliminary detail about SharePoint Server 2010
browser compatibility.
To ensure the best possible experience across multiple
browsers we’re focusing our SharePoint 2010 engineering efforts on targeting
standards based browsers (XHTML 1.0 compliant) including Internet Explorer
7, Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 3.x. running on Windows Operating Systems.
In addition we’re planning on an increased level of compatibility with
Firefox 3.x and Safari 3.x on non-Windows Operating Systems. Due
to this focus Internet Explorer 6 will not be a supported browser for SharePoint
Server 2010.
So, what can you do today to get into the best shape
for SharePoint Server 2010? 1. Start
by ensuring new hardware is 64-bit. Deploying 64-bit is our current
best practice recommendation for SharePoint 2007.
2. Deploy
Service
Pack 2 and take a good look at the SharePoint
2010 Upgrade
Checker that’s shipped as part of the update.
The Upgrade Checker will scan your SharePoint Server 2007 deployment for
many issues that could affect a future upgrade to SharePoint 2010.
3. Get
to know Windows Server 2008 with SharePoint 2007, this
post is a great starting point.
4. Consider
your desktop browser strategy if you have large population of Internet
Explorer 6 users.
5. Continue
to follow the Best
Practices guidance for SharePoint Server 2007.
6. Keep
an eye on this blog for updates and more details in the coming months.
Below are a few common Q&A’s (which we’ll add to
as required)
Q: What about Internet Explorer 6 and SharePoint 2010
publishing sites?
A: The Web Content Management features built into SharePoint 2010 will
provide a deep level of control over the markup and styling of the reader
experience. These features will enable customers to design pages
that are compatible with additional browsers for viewing content, including
Internet Explorer 6. A standards based browser such as Internet Explorer
7, Internet Explorer 8 or Firefox 3.x will be required to author content.
Q: Is Internet Explorer 6 officially supported by Microsoft?
A: Official Microsoft Product Support for Internet Explorer 6 follows
the lifecycle of the Operating System with which it was shipped.
In order for customers to receive product support through the Mainstream
Support and Extended Support phases, they need to have installed a supported
Service Pack. For example, customers who are using Windows XP must
transition to Service Pack 3 by July, 2010 and are eligible to receive
support for Internet Explorer 6 until April, 2014.
You can find additional information on Microsoft’s Support
Lifecycle Policy including specific dates, product information and support
offerings here: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifepolicy.
Q: Why are you only supporting the 64-bit versions
of SQL Server 2005 or 2008 for SharePoint Server 2010?
A: This decision was based on our current test data for SharePoint Server
2010 and real world experience from customers running SharePoint Server
2007 with 32-bit SQL Server. SharePoint performance and scalability
can benefit significantly from 64-bit SQL Server and the throughput increases
are significant enough for us to make the difficult decision to only support
SharePoint Server 2010 on 64-bit SQL Server 2005 or 2008. It has
been our strong recommendation for some time that SharePoint Server 2007
customers take advantage of 64-bit SQL Server due to the inherent performance
and scale benefits it can provide.
Q: Where can I find more information on the advantages
of 64-bit hardware and guidance on how to migrate SharePoint from 32-bit
to 64-bit.
A: These two TechNet articles are a good starting point;
Advantages
of 64-bit hardware and software (Office SharePoint Server 2007) Migrate
an existing server farm to a 64-bit environment (Office SharePoint Server
2007)
You have probably seen the news announcement
today where we announced the public beta for the new Microsoft Exchange
Server 2010. As part of that announcement, we also talked about some of
the names for the “14” wave of products including Microsoft Office 2010
and Microsoft SharePoint Server 2010. I wanted to answer some questions
that I think will inevitably pop to the top of your mind:
What happened to the Office piece of the name? We love
MOSS. . . . The first thing you’ll notice is that the MOSS acronym
goes away with the new name since Office is no longer in the SharePoint
official name. No one should worry that SharePoint doesn’t work great
with Office 2010 since we removed Office from the name, just like people
didn’t worry whether SharePoint was a great portal product when we removed
Portal from the 2007 name.
The primary reason why we took Office out of the name
- lots of folks associate the name Office with the Office client. We wanted
to take the opportunity to reestablish the Office name and brand to be
synonymous with the client suite. I say “Give the people what they Want”
so everyone should immediately think of Microsoft Office = Office apps.
Don’t try to acronym Microsoft SharePoint Server to MSS
since MSS is already taken by Microsoft Search Server. Just remember, SharePoint
is SharePoint is SharePoint.
What about Windows SharePoint Services? When you read through the announcement, you may be wondering
what happened to Windows SharePoint Services. While we didn’t announcement
anything new for WSS, and I want to assure you that we’re definitely working
on a new v4 version of the product. It’s too early to drill into any of
the details but WSS is getting a lot of new features and will be a great
release. We’ll talk more about WSS at a later date.
So, what was announced? Here are my key takeaways from the interview with Chris
Capossela:
• Exchange 2010 will lead the way for the 2010 (previously
referred by its codename “14”) wave of technologies and it will be available
in the second half of 2009. You can download a beta
today.
• Using Office Web applications, customers will be able
to create, edit and collaborate on Office documents through a browser.
• IT professionals will be able to choose to either deploy
and manage on-premises or hosted as a service.
• For developers, we are working on Open APIs, deep support
for industry standards and developer tool support with Visual Studio 2010.

We take product quality seriously and make
every effort to avoid and resolve issues that adversely impact our customers.
Unfortunately, we have recently discovered a bug with Service Pack 2 (SP2)
that affects all customers that have deployed it for SharePoint Server
2007.
During the installation of SP2, a product expiration date
is improperly activated. This means SharePoint will expire as though it
was a trial installation 180 days after SP2 is deployed. The activation
of the expiration date will not affect the normal function of SharePoint
up until the expiration date passes. Furthermore, product expiration 180
days after SP2 installation will not affect customer’s data, configuration
or application code but will render SharePoint inaccessible for end-users.
We are working to release a hotfix to automatically fix
this issue. A manual work-around is currently available and involves customers
re-entering their Product ID number (PID) on the Convert License Type page
in Central Administration. For more information and detailed steps
please read this KB
article.
We want to assure our customers that this issue does not
impact data integrity or their SharePoint deployment in any other way.
For your convenience, below are some answers to questions
that you may have and we will update this blog post with a link to the
hotfix as soon as it’s available.
We apologize for any inconvenience this issue may cause
you.
Jeff Teper
Corporate Vice President
SharePoint.
Q&A Which products are affected by this?
Applying Service Pack 2 to any of the following products will result in
this issue: Office SharePoint Server 2007, Office SharePoint Server 2007
for Internet Sites, Project Server 2007, Form Server 2007, Search Server
2008 and Search Server 2008 Express.
Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 is not affected by this
issue.
What can I do to fix it?
To work around this issue customers will need to re-enter their Product
ID numbers (PID) on the Convert License Type page in Central Administration.
Please see this KB
article for detailed steps.
Customers can also wait for the hotfix (available for
free from http://support.microsoft.com)
to resolve this issue.
Product ID numbers (PIDs) can be retrieved by logging
into the Volume
Licensing Service Center.
Note: For Search Server 2008 Express the only way to resolve
this issue is to apply the hotfix.
What is Microsoft doing to fix it?
Microsoft is working on a hotfix and public update for the product. We
will update this blog post with details and a link to the hotfix as soon
as it is available.
Do I need to update all of the servers in my farm?
No. The Product ID number only needs to be entered once.
What if I haven’t installed SP2 yet but want to? What
should I do?
You can continue to plan for and install Service Pack 2 for SharePoint
Server 2007 with the additional step of re-entering your Product ID number
after the installation is complete by following the instructions in this
KB
article.
Does this issue impact anything else?
The issue only activates the product expiration date. The activation of
the expiration date does not affect the normal function of SharePoint up
until the expiration date passes, at which point SharePoint will be inaccessible
for end-users. This issue does not affect customer’s data, configuration
or application code.
I can’t find/don’t know my original PID, where can
I find it?
Product ID numbers (PIDs) can be retrieved by logging into the Volume
Licensing Service Center.
