You will want to read thru the pdf manual I posted to this egroups files section.
When first installed it is the feature limited demo. Most features are locked down. Purchasing a license key unlocks all the features without having to reinstall.
But the demo is enough to determine if a video digitzer you may already own will work satisfactorily with ASC Uploader.

Hello all
I finally have all the issues with my outdoor computer resolved and my All Sky
Cam is now online! I do not have any night images yest so I am interested to
see what it shows. The All Sky Cam is at my home observatory which is a quite
light polluted. As per the name, there is even a very bright streetlight across
the street! I am doing this mainly to work out all the kinks so I can implement
the All Sky Cam at the observatory I am putting together in Granite Gap NM.
The new uploader is really essential to best operation. I had used another A to
D converter but I had really poor results. The Uploader and its software makes
this installation and operation a no brainer.
My only question is whether the image is as focused as the other ones. Fred, I
would appreciate it if you could take a look at my images and let me know what
you think.
Thanks to Fred for such a great product. I look forward to installing a few
more of these.
Derek
Hi Derek,
Congratulations on getting the software up and running!
I had a look at your images and they looks as sharp as the camera is capable of.
Remember that this is a color camera over an analog video connection, with no
internal sharpening applied, so it might appear a tad softer than a pure digital
connection would deliver. Also because video is interlaced, during nighttime
the odd and even fields have to be stacked which causes a slight loss of
resolution in the vertical direction. These are the compromises we get in
exchange for ease of use and low cost.
You might want to install the following beta software version which fixes a bug
where the images get squished horizontally in some cases:

Hi Fred
Thanks for the input. Well I am just totally happy with the performance of the
camera. The price and the ease of use trumps everything else out there.
I will be installing one at the observatory I am building in Granite Gap New
Mexico and hopefully at the Observatory at Texas A&M as soon as I can scare up
an internet connection.
I would like to put the same loop of pictures on my website. I think I have
figured out how to post a single image but not a loop. Do you have any pointers
on the html code or a place where I can get a tutorial on how to do this?
Thanks again

Folks,
By popular request, I've put together a tutorial on how to use All Sky Cam
images on your website. Topics include static images, discussion forum
signatures, image loops / animations, and full blown Flash movies.

Fred you are absolutely the best!!!! I cannot thank you enough. I have to do a
little more work on the cabinet that holds my outdoor computer that hosts the
camera and the Streetlight Observatory will be back online. I will them post
images from my all sky cam to my blog and to my clubs website. I cannot wait to
get Granite Gap online also.
Clear skies,

Hi everyone I just want to say that I got my All sky Cam last week and I could
not believe how will it performs. My only problem is the light pollution
surrounding me. But I'm planning to install another one in a remote area soon.
Regards
Salman
Hi,
I've been testing the allsky cam for more than a week in 25 - 30 mph wind and a
high temp. of around 103F. So far the result are impresive. The only problem I'm
having is the light pollution surronding my house.

Salman

Embedding images is as easy as falling off a log with your expert help Fred.
Thanks again. My webcam images are live on my clubs website.

Hi Salman,
Thanks for posting the images! I showed them to some of the attendees at the
ALCon convention this past week and they were very impressed to see the sky from
so far away.
Not much that can be done about light pollution - if glare from lights is
bothersome, you can try putting up a small shield or moving the camera lower
into a shielded position.

Hi Derek,
Thanks for sharing the link, congratulations on getting it going!
I noticed that some people are encountering a bug in the software where the
uploaded images can be squished horizontally a little bit. We're testing a fix
for that now and hope to release a new software version sometime next week,
before we head off to the SCAE show in California. If anyone has feature
requests or bug reports for the software, be sure to email them to me at
fred@...

The little black square on my All Sky Cam image is a piece of black electrical
tape I placed on the dome to shield the camera from my namesake streetlight.
Not perfect but quick and easy. A separate larger shield would be more
effective...

Is there a way to split the video signal before the digitizer connection? I
wondered if the signal could be sent to my TV and the computer monitor?
Thanks
Bill
> Is there a way to split the video signal before the digitizer connection? I
Hi Bill,
Yes you can easily split the video signal. If you use a simple RCA Y cable like
this:
http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103861
... the video signal might in some cases get a little bit dimmer. That can be
compensated on the computer side by going into the Uploader's input video
adjustments and tweaking the brightness slider.
A better way would be to use a video distribution amplifier. Then there would
be no loss in splitting up the signal:

Sorry, one more quick question... How far can I run the wire after I split it.
Thanks

Hi Bill,
It depends on the type of cable and whether you are using a video amplifier. If
you are using the simple Y splitter and the thin cable we ship with the All Sky
Cam, 30-60 feet should be OK. With higher quality RG-6 or RG-59 cable and the
video amplifier, several hundred feet should be possible.
Longer cable runs can be susceptible to ground loops, causing a herringbone or
bar pattern on the image. This can also happen when the camera/TV/computer are
powered off different circuit breaker panels. Then you would need a video
isolation transformer to clean up the signal - about $40.

I have noticed that after several days of image uploading to WeatherUnderground
the image stops updating. Checking the observatory computer shows the uploader
continuing to run with the WU uploader counter continuing to run as normal.
However, I cannot start the task manager nor any other system tool. The error
pop-ups say 'not enough quota...' or 'insufficient system resources...'. I
reboot the computer and start the ASC Uploader and everything is back to normal.
If I do not do a power off reboot, and just restart the uploader, no updated WU
image and still no system tools.
My next step was to do a full power off reboot, start ASC Uploader then
immediately start the task manager. Examination shows the handle counter
incrementing without stopping. It increments at a rate of about 3-6 handles per
screen refresh. This past attempt I let the ASC Uploader run a couple of days
until the count exceeded 976000 handles. Stopping the ASC Uploader stopped the
handler counter but the counter did not roll back down. A full power-off reboot
was necessary.
Has anyone else seen this problem?
Hi Tom,
During the initial development of ASC Uploader, a lot of time was spent
preventing and hunting down memory leaks like this. This is the first report
I've heard from anyone encountering one in the released version.
There is probably some combination of settings you are using that we didn't
cover in our testing. Our office camera has been uploading to Weather
Underground since day one with no troubles, so I'm not sure its specific to WU.
I think the easiest way to resolve this would be for you to privately email me
(to fred@...) your settings.dat and tasks.dat files so that we can
replicate your configuration here in the lab. These files can be found under
your C:\(username)\AppData\Local\Moonglow Tech\All Sky Cam Uploader folder under
Vista and Windows 7, or under C:\Program Files\Moonglow Technologies\ASC
Uploader folder on XP.
Please also let me know which program version you are using (go to Help |
About...).
Once we track down the cause I'll send you a beta test version with the fix to
try.

I know this is a bit off topic so we can continue this via email if you prefer
Fred.
I think the ASC uploader is just the greatest! I am so excited by its function
with the ALLSkyCam I have come up with some other uses for it. Do you have any
thoughts on which other cameras would work with it? I am specifically thinking
of the astronomical video cameras from Point Grey, Basler or The Imaging Source.
Is there any potential for getting one of those to interface with ASC Uploader?
I have tried it with a PGR Scorpion. That did not seem to work but I have a
hard time getting that camera to talk to anything.
Derek
Hi Derek,
ASC Uploader supports the Windows Direct Show interface. Of the manufacturers
you listed only the Imaging Source would be compatible.
Right now there is a bug with large image sizes causing the image to be
squished. You can see this for example on Idlewild Observatory on AllSkyCam.com
who is using an Imaging Source camera. I will be fixing this bug in the release
that will be out any day now.

Hello,
This allsky-camera looks great!
I was wondering if on the images, obtained from the allsky-camera, can be
astrometric measurements (more or less) can be done ?
What is the influence of light-polution on the AGC of the camera ? I ask this
because i live in a country with the highest light polution of Europe - i
couldn't never seen the milcky-way here were i live...
I was considering to buy me this camera, for my observatory, also in addition to
catch fire-balls on the images. But with the light-polution, i dont know of this
is possible.
Another question: is the outside glas heated ? I live near the river, so there
is always a high humidity here.
a lot of questions :)

That sounds great! I will look into one of TIS cameras. I assume the interface
type is not important? One of those GigE cameras would sure help with the
length limitation of USB. Will there be a sensor size limitation with the new
version of the software?
Thanks
Derek

Hi Fred
I am having trouble also. Mine has been running fine but now I notice it is not
updating images to the website. It seems to be taking pictures normally. Two
days ago, I noticed it was not updating the images on the website. I restarted
the PC, everything went back to normal. Today, I notice it did not refresh the
pictures from this morning. When I try to browse the internet from that
computer it says "insufficent resources"
I am restarting again but this seems new.
