To those interested in IMS and Time-enabled maps with TimeMap Java

Some months ago, I needed a software or a script that allowed to
create time-enabled maps or cartographic animations.

After various searchs in the Web I've found the TimeMap Java Win, an
OpenSource software, that is a cartographic applet with the capacity
of generating time-enabled maps to be seen in a web browser. But this
software doesn't only do this. With it, you can create an IMS
(Internet Map Server) with dynamic and interactive Cartography embeded
in HTML, that can be published in Webpages, or in a CD or a DVD.

I've been working with a GIS software since 1998 and now, I can export
or link my drawings (as a SHP or MIF) and my tables (DBF and CSV) and
my raster images (GeoTIFF, PNG, JPEG) created with my software in a
way that I can work them inside the TimeMap Java and build my
time-enabled maps or my my IMS at a very low cost.

If you want to learn how to do this also, I've created a training
video with the title "Learn how to use the TimeMapJava" that teaches
how to do all that.

Please, enter in http://learnhowtouse.net and see more about this in
training video. You can also visit the examples that exist in this site.

The only difference between AfricaTopo and T4A from a compiler point of view
is that AfricaTopo is compiled transparent.

I do not have Garmin Mobile XT so can't really test, but I guess that is the
issue.

Perhaps Garmin dropped support for transparent maps of else they have a bug
in their code which only shows with transparent maps.
Have you tried to contact Garmin? Perhaps just ask if the latest version of
Mobile XT supports transparent maps.

Hi,Ppl!
I wonder if someone could help me with a unique problem?
I have a Nokia N95 cell with symbian operating sys.(S60V3)
I recently upgraded my Garmin mobile app.from v.4.10.60 to4.10.80.
On the previous version I had official garmin maps + madmapper's
Sa 50K topo overlaid wich worked excellent(looks awesome on phone)
on the phone, was sent through mapsource 2 phone.

But when I upgraded the software 2 the new version the problem started.
First, the africa map and Sa street v6 from Garmin works normal, but as
soon as I load the Sa 50k transparrent topo set the app. crashes.
I tried 2 send it alone,but still crashes.I then aquired T4A(traveller's
Africa v.7.10) and send it 2 the phone, that worked well.

Now my question is why does all the other maps work well now and only
the sa50k topo not in the new version of garmin mobile.
And why did all of them worked in the previous version of the app.
Your help is sincerly appreciated,
Andre

Hi, all file types are probably used by ESRI with
ArcView / ArcExplorer etc. possibly with MapInfo, I
doubt that OziExplorere will be of assistance.

Although you probably will find that a specific
program like ArcView generated all these, individually
many programs may use same extension's

Individually:-

*.sbx - Adobe Illustrator Tsume
*.sbn - ArcView (spatial Index)
*.dbf - dBaseII/IV, but is also a ArcView shapefile
attributable table file), Clipper database, and others
you can also view many *.dbf's with Excel
*.shx - ESRI shapefile (points) / AutoCAD shape
entities.

I would say that the files are from ArcView /
ArcExplorer using the ESRI format.

I suspect that you have files with extention SHP as well. That is
your files are shapefiles with properties. You miss also PROJ files
which contain infomation about the ccordinate system of the data:
that compicates things since you will have to "guess" what the
coordinate system is.

Oziexplorer can open shapefiles also in demo mode, so download the
trial and give it a go. Keep in mind that with Ozi you can do pretty
much everything even if you don't have a licence just by switching
between demo and trial mode. Also be warned that Ozi does not love
large shapefiles.

Another way, more expensive but more user friendly, is to use
Globalmapper. In demo mode can can load the files but if you edit,
without a licence you can only save in GMP (global Mapper Package
file) format. That is quite convenient since you have a chance to see
if GM does what you need and then if you decide to get a licence you
can save the file in some other format. Also GM allows you to save
into MP - polish format, and then using free sw you can make your own
Garmin map to view in mapsource or upload to the GPS. I think
somewhere on the GM website there is a pdf explaining how to do that.

Ciao

Go to www.gpstm.com

Download GPS Trackmaker (free)

That will open the files (they are arcview files, you only need the .shp file)
Then use Trackmaker to save them as a .gpx file

Mapsource will open that.

I assume you are referring to Tracks4Africa (T4A) maps.

I suggest you join the T4A forum and ask there if you have not done so
already.
You are more likely to get a quick helpful answer there on T4A related
matters.
See http://www.tracks4africa.com/t4a_community.asp

You can also ask T4A direct for help (I think info [at] tracks4africa.co.za)

> I have tried the Mapsource route with no success

MapSource is the easiest way of loading maps to a Garmin GPS.
See the Garmin tutorial:
<http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapsourceTutorial.html>

I am not familiar with the "Pilot 111". Does it use serial or USB
connection?
For USB, you need to ensure that the correct Garmin USB drivers are
installed.

Are you able to up/down load other data (tracks, waypoints) from the GPS
using MapSource?
If yes, then the drivers and connection to the GPS is working.

If you have T4A successfully installed on your PC, it is just a matter of
selecting the map tiles you want with the map tool and then sending it to
the GPS.
Note that each map upload clears the GPS map memory before uploading the new
set. Thus you need to select and then upload ALL the map tiles you require
on the GPS in ONE operation.

Dear Madmappers,

Can someone assist me with " an idiots guide" to loading T4 maps ( mainly
Northern & Western Cape) to my recently acquired second hand Garmin Pilot
111 GPS.
I have tried the Mapsource route with no success (I am not very computer
literate ) and have also tried Mapinstall which gave me the error message "
Some devices were found however do not have necessary capabilities, check
Garmin is set to Host or Garmin" The GPS is set to same.
I would hate to delete the maps that are already on the Garmin, although I
don't need the detail that's in memory extending to roads in Europe, hence
my request for a step by step guide
Trusting you can be of assistance

I think the South African 1:50k series is the best map set that is easily
obtainable.
Unfortunately the farm boundaries on this set is very outdated.

The RSA 1:50k set is available for free download (one sheet at a time) from
the Madmappers website, but a much better way to get the complete set, is to
order the DVDs from Madmappers.
see http://madmappers.com/htm/SA50k1.htm

Easiest way to order is to contact Maurizio, info [at] madmappers.com (or
click on the CDs on above web page). He will confirm banking & delivery
details.

Did you try this combination?
By first converting the map-file to f.i. cal-file of TTQV and than
with GM to the wanted projection?

Hi vulcan4u (a real name will be nice and some punctuation and
line breaks will make your posts much easier to read :).

I am not an expert on this topic.
If none of the experts subscribed here reply, you might get a
a better answer if you ask your question on either
the Global Mapper or the Ozi Yahoo groups.
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/global_mapper/
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/OziUsers-L/

I am not familiar with mapnav, so don't know which image formats
and/or projections it supports, but from what you say, it sounds
like you will need to reproject the map and write it to an image format.
Strange that it does not support Lat/lon.

I am sure that you will be able to do the job with Global Mapper,
perhaps with some help from Ozi.

I do not have Global Mapper installed at present, so can't help much
with the reprojection there.
I am not sure either which outputs formats are available in the latest
version of Global Mapper. Perhaps it can even output an Ozi .map file???

If not, then a geotiff file or else an image file with world file should
be
sufficient.

Note that Ozi does not read .prj files.
It does read .tfw files to get the calibration, but not the
projection parameters; you will need to input that manually.
Ozi does support full geotiff (if you have the geotiff dll installed).
Try to output a geotiff from Global Mapper, import in Ozi and then
convert
the image to a format which mapnav supports.

It is easy to export a map image to .bmp or .png format in Ozi
(File | Save map to image file).
If you want .jpg, then a graphics utility can do the conversion for you.

As long as you do not change the pixel dimensions of the images,
you can copy and edit your original .map file to point the new image
formats and use it with Ozi.

Another tip that might come in useful somewhere:

If you place a dummy file (empty text file) named tfw.dat
in the OziExplorer folder, then you will get a new menu item in the
Ozi options menu, 'write tfw file'.
This will create a .tfw world file for the currently loaded map image,
which Global Mapper should be able to use.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi,Hans!I want 2 use it on my phone with app called mapnav(N95)The app
needs it in .Ozi,Wgs84,Mercator & in .bmp,.jpg,I think .png also
works.I have Globalmapper & OziEexpl 2 my disposal, and recently bought
Sa50k topo maps from madmappers wich is in mrSid format, calibrated 2
lat/long wgs84.I could convert the image file 2 .jpg 7 recalibrate 2
mercator in globalmapper, but could only get a .prj & .jpg.When
imported in Ozi it automatically switched 2 transverse mercator. If I
reproject in Ozi i lose accuracy.I'm stumped :(
