I don't know any specifics about the 360px but, if a flash is old enough it may not have been designed for the lower voltage levels of NiCad or NiMH batteries...

"Re-forming" the capacitor like this enables it to charge/discharge fully. Unfortunately, if you hear no "whine" when the flash is switched on, it won't help....
