The Manhattan Bridge opened to the public on December 31, 1909, so it had to be
close to completion by the time of this photo (though it doesn't especially look
like it!) There was only eight months between this photo and opening day.

Any updates as to when the Fort Steuben will be removed? It's really
disappointing and depressing to keep losing suspension bridges in that area.
How many will we have after the Fort Steuben is eliminated...Market Street,
Newall, which others?

Thanks for the update, David. I'm sad to lose another suspension bridge,
especially in that area.

I didn't realize the Market Street Bridge was over 100 years old.

I believe they were returning following watching fireworks.

Apparently the bridge wasn't designed for the typical live load figure of being
loaded with people shoulder to shoulder and back to chest.  There are so many
footbidges throughout VA, NC, WV, and TN that have signs posted "Maximum 4
People".  From reading the comments below it appears this bridge had a sign
posted limiting the amount of people.  What that # is, I don't know?  It also
appears that in years past there were police officers / municipal workers that
would limit how many where on the bridge at any given time during such events.

Last October a VDOT suspension footbridge had collapsed with ten people on it.

http://www.roanoke.com/news/nrv/wb/210511

"The 160-foot-long bridge hung about 30 feet over the creek and served as a
secondary access for three households, VDOT spokeswoman Heidi Underwood said. It
was used mostly when flooding made a nearby low-water bridge inaccessible to
traffic.

Underwood said there are no plans or funding to rebuild the bridge."

I recently took some pictures of some very unusual bridges in Minot, ND. First,
a rare "false arch" bridge:

http://www.bridgehunter.com/nd/ward/eastwood-park/

And two very small through truss footbridges:

http://www.bridgehunter.com/nd/ward/anne-pedestrian/

and

http://www.bridgehunter.com/nd/ward/bh43077/

Has anyone seen a false arch bridge like the Eastwood Park Bridge? It was built
as a false arch rather than a Marsh arch because of fears of patent
infringement.

If anyone has any information on the two footbridges, such as the year of
construction, please let me know as information on these bridges is scarce.
There apparently was another Anne Street bridge that was replaced by the current
structure.

Who know Minot had so many interesting bridges?

There were no advance postings about the Bay Bridge closure here on the Group,
but it was well-publicized locally in the San Francisco bay area. In a
nutshell, the entire bridge (traversed by 200,000+ cars on a typical day) was
closed for 4 days over this long weekend. This was to allow a 300-foot-long
section of the original 1930s construction to be eased out of place while a
temporary replacement was eased in, as part of the ongoing seismic rebuild.
Caltrans used the shutdown to accomplish other tasks, including a thorough
inspection, which turned up a crack halfway through an eyebar. At this writing,
they are working feverishly on a solution, but at the worst the bridge may need
to be closed for a day or two longer. For a complete archive of news stories on
this, I'd suggest the website of the S.F. Chronicle, which is sfgate.com, and
search 'bridge' to see all their coverage.

Some local people expressed a fear that it was being left to
deteriorate to a stage where it would need to be closed.
I have produced a webpage showing photos of the bridge plus a link to
the Bridgemeister site.

My page is :- http://web.me. com/forcooperman /Bridges/ Alexandra_
Bridge._River_ Tain..html

Apparently if the bridge did close it would effectively cut off a
number of footpaths used both by local people & visiting bird watchers
etc.

I understand that the Highland Council is responsible for the upkeep
of the bridge. Their email address is :- service.point@ highland. gov.uk

The Scottish Rights of Way Society will also be an interested party.
Their email address is :- info@scotways. com

If people from across the globe took an interest in this bridge I
think that it help getting it refurbished.

Any bridge fans in the northeastern U.S. - especially those in the New York City
area - should plan on attending the incredible grand opening of the Walkway over
the Hudson on the formerly abandoned Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge on the weekend
of October 3rd. Amazingly what many thought was a pipe dream has been completed
in less than 2 years with more than a thousand concrete planks, new railings and
lights and the ability of the public to walk or bike across the largest railroad
bridge in North America. What was once in danger of being torn down has been
saved for a new generation.

It is the only time in bridge history you will be able attend the reopening of a
major railway bridge or attend the opening of such a long and high pedestrian
bridge. Suspension bridge fans will now be able to photograph the Mid-Hudson
bridge from this 120-year old giant.

It really is going to be something else with a Grand Illumination and 1,000
Points of Light release on Friday night as well as fireworks between the Railway
and Mid-Hudson bridges. And then on Saturday October 3rd there will be official
grand opening ceremonies from 11am to 3pm. Then at 3pm the bridge will be
opened to the public and Saturday evening there will be illuminated performers.
I think it will be one of the grandest moments in bridge saving history that
will probably cause some Poughkeepsians to shed more than a few tears.

Check it all out here.

That is so cool! I wish that more historic bridges could be reused that way.

Does anyone plan on attending the ceremonies on the link below? I missed the
Queensboro events earlier this year, and definitely want to catch one or two
things for the Manhattan Bridge.

I was just up there a few weeks ago on a bridging trip.  Walked one way across
the bridge on the south side walkway, then bicycled the other way on the north
side bike path.

While visiting I noticed "1910" on one of the plaques and thought that next year
would be the 100th, but upon doing a bit of research for the caption to the
photos in the link below, I have become aware that the bridge officially opened
December 31, 1909 with the bridge still needing some work yet to be completed.
