Hi,
It's rare that anyone in government IT is looking for input from outside. The
site listed below provides us an opportunity to expound on the virtues of Open
Source, Agile Development processes and Ruby on Rails in particular. If you work
in the government space, improving government is in your immediate self
interest, but even if you don't, we are all tax payers and it's in everybody's
interest to grow government applications that meet citizen needs quickly, cost
effectively using solid tools like Rails and agile processes.

While the specific IT infrastructure topic I mentioned at a previous DCRUG seems
to have closed, other topics can be opened and discussion is invited.
Camille
We have a great group coming together, and I hope you or a friend can join us.

Hello:
My name is Elizabeth Shaw and I represent a group called UXL
(http://uxleague.org) that is involved in research on user experience design and
Agile development. Currently we are researching Agile use in a distributed team
environment (a team whose members who are not located in the same place).
We have created an online survey asking questions about people's experiences
working on a distributed product development effort. The survey is available
at:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=jWGOF2TRjRhADtR7r6hZrA_3d_3d
Participation is entirely optional. There are no required questions in the
survey and it is possible to exit the survey at any time. We do not require any
personal information. All data collected is completely confidential and is not
associated with the respondent. We would be happy to share our results with
anyone interested after we have completed our data compilation.
Thank you very much for your time and attention! Please feel free to contact me
anytime with any questions or comments about this post, about the survey or any
other topic.
Sincerely,
Elizabeth Shaw

Given that Ruby on Rails is big in the Agile community, I thought some of our
audience might be interested in the one day training that David Bock will be
giving.
While automated deployment has not yet become an Agile mantra the way CI has, it
should, given what an incredible headache deployment can be. With the tools and
techniques available today, not automating your deployment is like not having a
code repository.
For those of you only interested in Java or .Net, some of the tools and
techniques will apply to you, but not all. If interested you might want to drop
David Bock an email and ask about applicability, or whether he later plans to
provide training on your specific deployment concerns.
For those of you who don't know David Bock, he's smart, agile, an incredible
speaker, pragmatic to the core, an all around nice guy and a pillar of the DC
technical community.
The training price is also pretty darn good for a full day. Short of free, it's
the best I've seen from a professional. Check it out.

I'm going to be teaching a 1-day class on Rails deployment,
performance tuning, and production monitoring the day before our
regional RubyNation conference. It is going to cover a *lot* of
material.
http://www.codesher pas.com/training
If you have been to a RUG or JUG meeting, you know the venue - the
large FGM conference room in Reston, VA
If you use the registration code RUBYFAN the training is only $125.
And don't forget to register for RubyNation for 3 days of Ruby and
Rails immersion! Last year we sold out weeks before the event; seats
are going fast.

Register today for this special one day class on Software Team Optimization with Jared Richardson of NFJSOne.
Overview:Software teams are always asked to do more with less, but we rarely step back and cleanup our processes. This class offers proven tools and techniques that can help keep your team as effective as possible. We'll look at techniques to make sure you're working on the right problems with a minimum of distractions. This training focuses on five key areas that every project has to cover cleanly: requirements, execution, testing, deployment, and maintenance. In each area we'll see where we can leverage automation and tighten the feedback loops. This frees up developers from unnecessary "busy work" and ensures the right problems are being addressed.
Training Session: Software Team Optimization with Jared Richardson of NFJSOne
Target Audience:This class is aimed at developers, tech leads and managers.
Focus of Training Session: Requirements - Execution - Testing - Deployment - Maintenance
In this action-packed, one-day session, we'll cover the effective use of
*Time boxed iterations
*Continuous integration
*Test automation
*Integration testing
*Defect driven testing
*Daily meetings
*Peer code reviews
*Scripted deployments
*Cloud technologies
These tools and ideas can be used in various ways to address the area your team needs to tune-up. You'll bring fast feedback to your team, your customers, and your management. These tight feedback loops provide more transparency, bring more comfort to everyone involved, and mitigate risk on your project. These are development and process techniques that can be introduced by team members or team leaders.
Register today as there is limited seating available! Please contact Jay Zimmerman at jay.zimmerman@... with any questions regarding the Software Team Optimization class coming to Reston on June 17th with Jared Richardson.

XPers,
I'm not working with agile embedded teams currently, but I know some of you do
and from what I know following the Agile Embedded community, James Grenning is
about as good as it gets within it. James' blog
http://www.renaissancesoftware.net/blog/
is chock full of useful tips on how to agilely approach some of the toughest
things and James has been leading the Agile Embedded Yahoo group
http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/AgileEmbedded/
for years.
Mike Cohn posted the following on his mail update about James upcoming Embedded
TDD class, which I thought I'd pass along:
"Training Course on TDD from James Grenning
Speaking of training, I also want to mention that embedded agile development
expert James Grenning will be teaching a couple of Test-Driven Development (TDD)
classes in March. He's got TDD for Embedded C++ and TDD for Embedded C classes
coming in March in Weston, Florida. Check out his website for details. I highly
recommend these classes to anyone doing embedded development."

Schedule is 7 PM; I've been getting there a bit earlier, since I'm
between gigs at the moment. Location is the Panera in the north end of
Laurel, off of 198 just south of the BW Parkway.

We had been working on a Merb-based wiki, but by general concencus,
that's about done (in the "not gonna work on it any more" sense, not
the "ship it" sense).
Jeff and I both agree that Ruby refactoring tools _ought_ to be
straightforward, given existing libraries, so we thought we'd give it a
try. At best, we'll end up with refactoring tools for Ruby; at worst,
we'll learn where the limits of RubyParser and Ruby2Ruby are.
First story is to just get a parse-tree of an arbitrary chunk of Ruby
displayed in a treeview widget; last week, we spent playing with the
Gtk tree widget and the RubyParser gem, just to get a feel for both.

That'd be fun; haven't seen you in a while.
BTW, Jeff and I started a new project last week; seems like RubyParser
and Ruby2Ruby should make it pretty easy to build refactoring tools for
Ruby, so we're gonna see how far we can push it. Last week was a spike,
just to get familiar with the packages.
