I'm really sorry for the short notice, but we've finally worked out the location for this seminar:

APLN-MD/GB SPiN will be presenting a low-cost seminar on Friday afternoon, January 29th, 2010, at the Emerging Technology Center in Baltimore, MD. George Dinwiddie, Software Development Coach, will be presenting "A Lingua Franca to Ensure You Get the Right System." You'll want to bring your business partners, testers, and developers to this seminar. Where else can you find such inexpensive training in the convergence of requirements definition and automated testing. For additional information, including directions, check out the NextMeeting page (http://apln.agilemaryland.org/moin/NextMeeting).

A ''Lingua Franca'' to Ensure You Get the Right System

Presenter: George Dinwiddie, Software Development Coach

Description:

The business tells the IT department what it wants. The developers build it. The testers expect it to do something different. And neither of these turn out to be what the business had in mind. Has this ever happened to you?

IT departments have always struggled with getting clear and unambiguous requirements. Automated acceptance tests that check the system with examples make a big impact on coordinating the work of developers and testers. Unfortunately, they’re often incomprehensible code to the business people asking for the system. What if they test the wrong thing? What if the examples are wrong?

Advances in testing frameworks make it possible to express these examples in the language of the business. The person commissioning the development can look at these examples and say, "Yes, that's what I mean." The tester can automate the examples as acceptance tests without changing the way that they're expressed. The developer can check the code as it's being written and know when it meets the stated requirements.

Additionally, the automated examples form the basis for regression tests in the future. Automated scripts alone can't ensure bug-free applications, but they can provide a big step up in correctness and reliability - freeing testers to spend time looking for more elusive problems.

In this seminar, you'll learn how you can develop a specification language to bridge the gap between the business and IT. You'll see patterns of these languages that are easily automatable as tests that can be run throughout the development process - demonstrating the progress being made. You'll discover open-source tools that can help you get the right system more reliably, and ensure that it continues to stay that way as development proceeds.

Who Should Attend?

    * IT Directors, Project Managers, Tech Leads, PMPs, ScrumMasters, Business Analysts, Developers, Testers
    * Everyone should bring their business partners with them.

Presenter Bio:

George Dinwiddie fully intended to remain a developer of software, hardware, firmware, and combinations of those, but it was not to be. The harder problems were almost invariably organizational ones. And these problems did not seem to respond to engineering solutions.

Today, George helps organizations develop software more effectively. Effectiveness may be achieved by improved engineering practices, enhanced design and testing skills, reduced waste effort, clarified goals, better communication and teamwork, or a number of other ways. George helps teams address their current impediments to further excellence. He works with developers, testers, scrummasters, product owners and managers to address issues at both personal and systemic levels.

Kicked off by an early start in television repair, George's career has included electronic hardware development, embedded firmware in assembly, C, and C++, Information Technology in Java, C#, and Ruby, as well as dalliances with other languages. He has shared his expertise at such venues as the Agile Conference, XP Day North America, APLN Maryland Chapter, Agile Maryland, and the Simple Design and Testing Conference. As a consultant, he has helped companies, large and small, including Wells Fargo, Autodesk, and Nationwide Insurance. He has a BA in English, an MS in Computer Science, and has worked in software development for more than a quarter century.

Does anyone have a link to the Open Space?

The next meeting of DC ALT.NET is on 2/24 from 7-9PM at the usual Motley
Fool. This time we're bringing back George Dinwiddie to talk to us
about a common language between analysts, testers, developers and
everyone else on the team.

In the upcoming months, we have meetings on ASP.NET MVC view engines,
Git for the .NET developer, the Reactive Extensions for .NET, Domain
Driven Design and much more. But as always, this group can't do
anything without your help. So if you'd like to see a particular topic,
please do not hesitate to ask, and likewise if you'd like to speak, we'd
love to have you.

Details Below and be sure to RSVP Here:

A ''Lingua Franca'' to Ensure You Get the Right System

Presenter: George Dinwiddie, Software Development Coach

Description:

The business tells the IT department what it wants. The developers build
it. The testers expect it to do something different. And neither of
these turn out to be what the business had in mind. Has this ever
happened to you?

IT departments have always struggled with getting clear and unambiguous
requirements. Automated acceptance tests that check the system with
examples make a big impact on coordinating the work of developers and
testers. Unfortunately, they're often incomprehensible code to the
business people asking for the system. What if they test the wrong
thing? What if the examples are wrong?

Advances in testing frameworks make it possible to express these
examples in the language of the business. The person commissioning the
development can look at these examples and say, "Yes, that's what I
mean." The tester can automate the examples as acceptance tests without
changing the way that they're expressed. The developer can check the
code as it's being written and know when it meets the stated requirements.

Additionally, the automated examples form the basis for regression tests
in the future. Automated scripts alone can't ensure bug-free
applications, but they can provide a big step up in correctness and
reliability - freeing testers to spend time looking for more elusive
problems.

In this seminar, you'll learn how you can develop a specification
language to bridge the gap between the business and IT. You'll see
patterns of these languages that are easily automatable as tests that
can be run throughout the development process - demonstrating the
progress being made. You'll discover open-source tools that can help you
get the right system more reliably, and ensure that it continues to stay
that way as development proceeds.

Who Should Attend?
IT Directors, Project Managers, Tech Leads, PMPs, ScrumMasters, Business
Analysts, Developers, Testers
Everyone should bring their business partners with them.

Presenter Bio:

George Dinwiddie fully intended to remain a developer of software,
hardware, firmware, and combinations of those, but it was not to be. The
harder problems were almost invariably organizational ones. And these
problems did not seem to respond to engineering solutions.

Today, George helps organizations develop software more effectively.
Effectiveness may be achieved by improved engineering practices,
enhanced design and testing skills, reduced waste effort, clarified
goals, better communication and teamwork, or a number of other ways.
George helps teams address their current impediments to further
excellence. He works with developers, testers, scrummasters, product
owners and managers to address issues at both personal and systemic levels.

Kicked off by an early start in television repair, George's career has
included electronic hardware development, embedded firmware in assembly,
C, and C++, Information Technology in Java, C#, and Ruby, as well as
dalliances with other languages. He has shared his expertise at such
venues as the Agile Conference, XP Day North America, APLN Maryland
Chapter, Agile Maryland, and the Simple Design and Testing Conference.
As a consultant, he has helped companies, large and small, including
Wells Fargo, Autodesk, and Nationwide Insurance. He has a BA in English,
an MS in Computer Science, and has worked in software development for
more than a quarter century.

Be sure to come out tonight, as we have a special guest to come join us,
none other than Uncle Bob Martin himself who is in town teaching a TDD
course in Baltimore. Hope to see you all there, snow or no snow.

Sigh. Why do people keep scheduling these thing during the week, so I'm
forced to choose between not going and burning vacation days?

Rhetorical question; I know the answer: If it's during the week, it's
"Professional Development"; if it's on the weekend, it's recreation. As
if recreation were somehow less respectable.

George,

The speakers list looks pretty cool. Definitely a strong Agility and Rails
focus. Don't know if I'll make it; depends on my current gig.

BTW, for those who don't know Rails Conf http://en.oreilly.com/rails2011 is
returning to Baltimore this year.

I seem to remember that Linda (I think) and some others missed last year's Rails
Conf, so here is your chance again.

Support to Emergencies, Diseases and Disasters: http://instedd.org/ --
which uses agile techniques to expedite getting technology-based
initiatives off the ground in times of crisis)

* and Davis Frank (Jasmine BDD/JavaScript framework committer).

In addition to agile content, the 2-day, 5-track program features a
variety of technologies and languages.

Confirmed speakers include Bruce Tate (author of Seven Languages in
Seven Weeks), Yehuda Katz (SproutCore project team and Rails Core),
Molly Holzschlag (Web Standards Evangelist), Ryan Dahl (creator of
node.js), Ola Bini and Nick Sieger (JRuby Core Team), David Black

(Spring Integration project lead), Josh Clark (author of Tapworthy:
Designing iPhone Interfaces for Delight and Usability) and Jonathan
Stark (author of Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript).

We will be adding more speakers and posting abstracts over the next few
weeks, but you can view the roster-in-progress here:

when the the price goes up.

Do you love Ruby? Are you Agile? Would you like to work in a really cool domain
agilely developing Ruby and Rails apps on a really fun team?

We're looking for a few sharp agile Rails developers.

I'm the lead agile coach for the program and if you know me, you know the
project is really agile. Not just Scrum, but real agile technical practices as
well. So if you are proud of your rspec and cucumber code coverage you are
probably our kind of developer. If you practice ATDD, BDD or TDD and write your
automated tests first, you definitely are. If you don't yet write your tests
first, but are willing to learn, we'll teach you.

This is agile, so naturally you are sharing with and learning from your
teammates. The existing team members are really sharp, but they are new to
Rails, so you will be informally mentoring them. Meanwhile you will be learning
cyber security from them.

Cyber security is fascinating domain with complex object relationships and
associations. So while like most all Rails apps, we will include a relational
database, we also will be using non-relational databases, probably MongoDB, or
possibly another DB if you have an even better idea. Also later releases will
include social media type of functionality.

The existing team is the opposite of the typical stuffy CYA government
contracting team. They are team players, who jump in to help each other. Lunch
and hall conversations may include lively technical debates, but they also
include discussions of on-line gaming and paintball. Planned team outings
include go-carting and laser tag as well as traditional things like picnics and
swimming.

Hours are pretty reasonable. We track our velocity and plan future iterations
realistically. We do expect dedication and we expect you to care about the
quality of your work and your customer, but we don't assume heroics. People have
lives and we respect that.

The team is in Fairfax, VA just off of 66.

U.S. Citizenship is required. You don't need to have a active security clearance
(any clearance current or past is a plus), but eventually you will need to get
one.

Interested? Drop me a line at my business email camillescareer@...

I'd like to introduce the DC Agile Software Testing meetup group,
which is having its inaugural meeting on Tuesday 3/22 in Arlington.

We're calling ourselves D-CAST.

We're looking for "Better Ways To Make Better Software".

Agile software development is a great way to make good software that
satisfies real needs and creates real value to those who build and use
that software. Everyone on the team is concerned with the quality of
the product. However, sometimes it can be an overwhelming task being
the team member whose job it is to insure that the quality of the
product is sufficient.

DCAST was created to develop a community of those interested in agile
software testing who are also interested in testing agile products
more effectively and more efficiently. By sharing our hard won
knowledge we can all help make each other's lives easier and more
productive.

If you're interested in sharing how you have raised the quality bar of
your agile processes, we would love it if you were a part of this
community. If you're interested in learning (or want to all learn
together), you're even more welcome.

Hope to see you there next week.

Thanks,

Rob
