I agree...buyer beware. I bought mine from a retailer off Ebay and I
guess I was fortunate enough to get an honest one. It came to me in
great shape and ready to go. I paid a bit more than what these are
selling for but that's the way it goes.
As to Rons point about the .965 Focus assembly. Mine came with
that along with usless eyepieces. Through others in this group I
found out that if I called Meade to "complain" they will send out a
1.25" hook up for free. They did. At first they tried to sell me one
and I complained a little louder and they gave in. No promises it
will work for everyone. I may have gotten a sympathetic Customer
Service Rep.

Recently, there has been a lengthy series of postings from someone
on the "Telecsopes Discussion Group" who claims to have purchased a
DS2130AT off E-Bay. When it arrived it was missing some of the
parts and the tube was dented.

I do not know if this is true, and even if this is true, there are
no reports that this has happended to anyone else. However, when
purchasing off E-Bay or anywhere else, buyer beware.

Hi Dave,
Say just a quick note on those 2130's on e-bay for sale. I found that
most of them, although good for the price, are all .965 on the
focuser assembly. Kick backs from the Wal Mart. So be careful when
you purchase and check the focus size.

Hi,

I don't know what you guys think of the Mead DS-2130AT scope but
it's one that I own and have been pretty happy with it so far. I'm
just a beginner and only own one other scope which is also a Meade
but a smaller one so I don't have too much to compare it with.

Anyway I was scanning ebay for a few things and came across one for
$129.00 plus shipping which looked like a great deal so I thought I
would pass it along. It is fully goto functional. There is another
one for sale by the same seller for $75.00 plus $35.00 shipping
without the goto function. Both are buy it now.

Just thought I'd pass it on.

  Item # 250086448263 on epay.

P.S. I'm not the seller. (just thought I'd throw that in.)

If you have a Meade electronic focus unit, it would plug into
the AUX port on the telescope's power panel, and would be
controlled from the Autostar.

If you are speaking of a 494 Autostar, then you also need
to plug the 506 cable adapter into an/the Aux socket.

If that's where you're going to be putting the double adapter:
Yes, it will work. Devices plugged into the AUX sockets (some
scopes, like the ETX90, have two AUX sockets) are merely in
parallel, and that's what the telephone adapter does.
*But*
The AUX socket is a -narrow- (4P4C in phone-speak, or RJ-22)
socket. It fits telephone -handset- cords, not telephone -line-
cords. And 99.5% of the double-adapters you're going to find
are -line- adapters, not -headset- adapters (since headsets
-cannot- be run in parallel). I have used belt sanders and
whittling knives to "adapt" line plugs to fit into AUX sockets.

The other approach would be to buy a 497 Autostar.
That -includes- the serial adapter in the Autostar itself
(there's a second socket at the bottom of the Autostar).
That, in turn, only requires a can-be-home-built 505-like
serial cable to connect to the PC.
And the AUX socket on the telescope remains free for a focuser.

have fun

One of the frustrations of using my D-2114ATS is that when using it
with a computer, there are only ports for the computer and Autostar,
the LPI being plugged straight into the computer. There is no room for
an electronic focus. My son suggested using an ordinary telephone
double-adaptor plugged into the port for the computer so that there
would be a port for the computer and a port for the electronic focus.
Has anyone tried this, and does it work? Can you focus from the
computer - which is what I want to do.

Anyhoo, I'm w/ Michael on this point -- I use 1.25" EPs with a 2"
Meade DS mirror diagonal on my DS90. While some EPs require me to
rack pretty close to the inner limit of focuser travel, I can reach
focus with all mine. Perhaps the extender mentioned would help if
you cannot.

My DS-2090 just barely reaches focus with an elbow on certain eye pieces.  I haven't thought of what to do about it, since it has not been critical so far.

And a word, Jerrry.  Your 3 lines have 5 misspellings, and every sentence is not captialized, doesn't use spaces properly, etc.  Please try using a spell checker.  At least use wordpad and copy and paste the text after checking.  You will be taken more seriously that way.

Pot metal, your're lucky. This one is plastic! There' that's even
cheaper than pot metal.

Ya' know I'd be glad to pay the price difference for real screws,
maybe even brass screws. Gad it would probably add a whole dollar to
the price!

It is not essential that you get the Celstron Eyepiece Kit. Since
your husband already has a 25MM, 9MM and a barlow. See what your
local dealer has in plossel or super plossel eyepieces for $40-$60
each. Ideally, I would look for a eyepiece in the 30 to 40MM
range, and a eyepeice in the 13 to 17MM range both with 1 1/4
barrels. The main difference between a plossel and super plossel is
that the super plossel has a wider field of view, typicallly 10
degrees more that a plossel. This allows you to see more through
the eyepiece. You can spend a lot of money on eyepieces, and for
that reason I was suggesting that you limit those you are looking at
to the $40 - $60 range.

As you indicated if your husband wears eyeglasses, when he observes,
long eye relief would be important. I wear eyeglasses, I am
nearsighted with very little astigmatism. In my case I prefer to
observe with my eyglasses off. However, not everyone can see well
enough through the telescope without eyeglasses to do this, and some
people simply prefer wearing eyeglasses when using the telescope.

Regarding filters, filters are used to enhance detail when veiwing
the moon or planets. The number #80A is a medium blue filter. I
used this filter in place of a Moon Filter when viewing the Moon.
The #80A filter filters out 70 of the visible light. However, it
does make the Moon appear blue. This filter should also work when
observing venus, but is douptful that any detail would be visible
using the DS90 and this filter. Your husband could also try using
this filter on Saturn or Jupiter. However, he may find that a
filter that lets through more light such as a #82A Pale Blue or a
#21 Orange, filter may be more useful when observing Saturn or
Jupiter.

I do not have a Light Pollution/Nebular filter, as I result, I am
not cetain has well these do or do not work.

Good Luck,
Mike Morris

Thank you so much for the suggestions, it has certainly helped! Just
today, i found someone locally who sells telescope supplies. I am
going to call to see if they have the Celestron Kit, since, if there
are any problems i can return it rather than have to deal with the
whole mail order hassle. There is no mention of Celestron on his
website so i doubt he has it. I saw that he has a Long Eye Relief
multicoated eyepiece(doesn't state the namebrand) that is supposedly
good for eyeglass wearers? I was also checking out the filters on this
local vender's website, and noticed that he has a Light
Pollution-Nebular Filter. It SOUNDS like a good filter to have - any
comments? On this website, it says that the #80A filter is a
"must-have". What is so special about that particular filter? The
website i am looking at is: http://www.e-scopes.cc/ if you want to
check it out too.

Thanks again!

I have been growing my 2" eyepiece collection and have found a problem
with weight. DUH! However, I came up with a cheap solution and it works
quite well.
I picked up a piece of 1.25 wide by 18" long metal strap and drilled
holes that match up to the tube rings on the DS models. I use speaker
magnets that I can slide up and down the strap to balance the heavy
eyepieces.
When I put it on my DS80 I point the strap toward the lens in front,
and when I use it on my DS114 I point the strap toward the mirror in
the back. Works on both scopes that way!
Now I can mount a camera with no worries about balance either!
Also ith works out perfectly as a mount for my Rigel Quikfinder.

I might add that when you have it open it is a good
idea to go ahead and paint the encoder wheels flat
black and check the sensor for alignment. I have seen
many of them bent way out even though they still
worked that way.

The ten degree error is **specific** to ONE encoder vane-gap
being obscured by dirt or grease.

There are 36 vanes... the Autostar expects 36 to pass with
every motor rotation, and the Ratio setting reflects that.
If one vane-gap is dirty, then the Autostar sees only 35
light/dark cycles per motor rotation.

Scaling up through all of the gears, that means it sees only
350 measured degrees go by when you have actually slewed a
full 360 degree circle.

The fix is to open the motor area and clean the encoder disk.
