Magnetic deviation from true north
There is a HUGE DIFFERENCE between magnetic north and true north. Northern California magnetic north is almost NE! Looky here:

Frank, I'm not sure where in California you live, however even in San Diego, Polaris is 32 degrees above the horizon. At the Northern border or California
