Transitioning to other gear of necessity, I'd like to thank everyone in the
group for all the help and enjoyment the past several years. Special thanks to
Kel and ChuckR.  This is a great place to get started in astrophotography;
probably there is nowhere better.
"Of necessity" for several reasons: 1) I'm just now recovering from a severe
back problem and no longer should be lifting my LX90GPS 8" to wedge height so
its got to go and 2) I managed to fry both my DSI Pro II cameras last week
moving my USB powered hub to a new laptop. Item 2) means I won't be producing
any more DSI images. New gear is here or on the way. (Anyone interested in my
LX90GPS 8" or lots of associated AP support gear for imaging with an LX90 or
other scope can contact me privately for first shot at it).
Best of luck to all and, most importantly, have fun.
-Jeff

I would place my bet on flex in the focuser. Everything else has set
screws that you can tighten as needed. Doesn't the William Optics
focuser have a lock screw you can tighten?

Tele Vue has a 3.5" long by 2" diameter extension tube, which may be
just long enough. If you want something that screws together you can
get a 100 mm long by 48 mm diameter t-mount extension tube from Edmund
Optics. One end has male 42 mm by 0.75 mm threads and the other has
female 42mm by 0.75 mm threads. The female end goes onto the camera
adapter and the male end screws into the DSI in place of the 1-1/4" nose
piece. The extension tube also comes in lengths other than 100 mm.

Got it.  I think I will have a look at the Scopestuff adapter as well.  I don't see moving to 2" filters right now as the camera I am eyeing (or the filter wheel actually) uses 1.25" as well.  Makes sense though if you are using DSLR-type filters.
Great, Steve, thanks so much for the information.  This was exactly what I was hoping to find out.

Hey Mark,

You are correct about the 1.25" IR filter not working with this setup. I had a 2" IR that came with my DSLR that I screwed into the nosepiece of the Orion adapter. I never liked the cheap little plastic disk that Meade put under the nose piece of the DSI IIIC anyway.

Hey Mark,

Glad to be of service. I use the 2" Prime Focus
adapter seen here: http://tinyurl. com/8hyjn4
it simply screws onto the camera
face plate and slides into the focuser. Actually I have two, one for my imaging
camera and another for my guide camera, they work great and are extra solid
virtually eliminating flexure.

Hey Mark,

I'm using a DSI IIIC coupled
to a Meade 80mm ED APO and use the Orion 2" to T thread adapter connected
directly to the T threads on
my camera and the 2" eyepiece
adapter slides into
the focuser of the 80mm scope. The focuser is only racked out about 2" or so to
achieve good focus, balance and
flexure with the DSI IIIC. It
sounds like the Megrez has a problem with that camera, I'm very pleased
with the Meade scope setup. The scope was under $500 when I purchased
it, I don't think they've changed much
since.

I have a DSI IIIc and am currently using a WO
Megrez II 80mm for imaging. I am looking to change this
setup because of the ridiculous amount of backfocus needed by this
scope. I have to rack the focuser almost all the way out,
then use 2 2" extensions in order to reach focus. This is
just not going to work as it is introducing some flexure into the
set up. I was just wondering what other folks with this
camera use for imaging. I would like to stay in the 80mm
range partly for budgetary reasons and partly because I want to
upgrade the camera itself in the not too distant future.
So,
the question is, what are other DSI III users using for their
imaging
scopes.

Thanks,
Mark

Yes, I can pretty easily wiggle the camera with all the gear in place.  Another symptom is that I can center an parfocalized EP on a star in either East of West, dial in a telrad, then go back to Polaris (switch position on my mount) and see that the telrad and EP no longer match.
Maybe I have not looked in the right place for a 4", but that is just about what I would need.

What are the symptoms of flexure? Can you wiggle the camera back and
forth or does it show up in star images?

Most small refractors are made for visual use with a star diagonal and
you need to have an extension tube to substitute for the diagonal when
you take the diagonal off. You shouldn't need to use two extension
tubes because extension tubes come in many different lengths and one
will fit your configuration without having to resort to two.

Mark,

Here is another adapter that will work, is less expensive, and free shipping.

http://www.agenaastro.com/Blue-Fireball-2-Prime-Focus-T-Adapter-p/paar-bf-i06011\

Your original message mentioned you were using the DSI IIIc. What other filters
are you using? For
your 1.25" filters you could use this before you screw on the 2" adapter.

I have a DSI IIIc and am currently using a WO Megrez II 80mm for imaging.  I am looking to change this setup because of the ridiculous amount of backfocus needed by this scope.  I have to rack the focuser almost all the way out, then use 2 2" extensions in order to reach focus.  This is just not going to work as it is introducing some flexure into the set up.  I was just wondering what other folks with this camera use for imaging.  I would like to stay in the 80mm range partly for budgetary reasons and partly because I want to upgrade the camera itself in the not too distant future.
So, the question is, what are other DSI III users using for their imaging scopes.

Thanks,
Mark

Thank you Steve, that may be just the answer.  As for the adapter, could you tell me which one of these it is?
http://tinyurl.com/yjsuo6x
I like the Megrez quite a lot, but the focus thing really bothers me.  I think they are really aimed at binoviewing not AP.  Shoulda thought of that before I snagged it, but I saw "triplet" and my eyes lit up. ;)

Hey Mark,

I'm using a DSI IIIC coupled to a Meade 80mm ED APO and use the Orion 2" to T thread adapter connected directly to the T threads on my camera and the 2" eyepiece adapter slides into the focuser of the 80mm scope. The focuser is only racked out about 2" or so to achieve good focus, balance and flexure with the DSI IIIC. It sounds like the Megrez has a problem with that camera, I'm very pleased with the Meade scope setup. The scope was under $500 when I purchased it, I don't think they've changed much since.

I apologize, I didn’t look closely enough at the error your friend was getting.  Yes, the problem is that he is missing the .Net Framework 2.0.  Even if it was installed before, there is the possibility that something in the registry or GAC got messed up in the upgrades, etc.  Regardless, just download the file from below, it is a self extracting exe which will install the framework and he should be good to go.

Hi Don,

The nature of the error message makes me wonder if perhaps Envisage is not finding an operating system file it needs. Since Envisage uses the .NET platform, you might wish to advise George to update, or if needed, reload .NET from Microsoft. This is just a hunch at this point, but it wouldn't hurt anything to try it out.

If I recall correctly, Envisage was released under the .NET Framework 1, the following update 1.1,  and version 2. I don't believe it required Framework version 3 for XP. Pehaps Stephen or someone else will jump in if my recall isn't correct :-)

Hi Don,
Do you know what OS? I don't have experience with Vista, but I vaguely remember posts here about certain to-do's with Vista.

Hi All, The OS is indeed XP Pro SP2. Same OS on all the computers and the
Envisage is working fine on all but this one machine.
Thanks in advance for any input.

Hi,

My friend George is having a problem using his DSI, Envisage, and a Dell
computer. He emailed me the following asking me for help. I thought someone
here may have had a similar problem. I would appreciate any ideas.

-----
George's message:
-----

I have been using envisage 7.05 on a laptop with my DSI with no problem. I
picked up a Dell Optiplex GX520 desktop to use in the observatory. It works fine
with every program except the Envisage. I have another desktop that runs the
Envisage with no problem but I want to use the Dell and am hoping someone here
has a solution. The Dell has two GB of DDR2 memory, Pentium 4 2.8GHZ CPU with
hyper threading so runs like a dual core. Have 160GB SATA hard drive.

Have re-downloaded the software several times and re-installed several times
after completely deleting the old installation. Even copied a working
installation from one desktop to the Dell with no success.

The error message I get is:

Evisage.exe – Application Error: The application failed to initialize properly
(Oxc0000135). Click on OK to terminate the application.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Best to all,

Don Waid

The IP 127.0.0.1 is a loopback address that is used for testing the NIC. As such it is an unused address. Try using a static IP something like 192.168.20.xx. With the last octet being say a 10 for the server and 12 for your computer. Not knowing how your system is set up, you may even be able to use DHCP. But most if not all systems can use a static IP.

Subject: [Meade_DSI] Envisage and Net Scope Server

I'm trying to use Net Scope server to allow both Autostar Suite (map) and Envisage to connect to my LX200GPS. I've had luck with starting the server, connecting Autostar to it, but no luck with Envisage. With Autostar, I connect to NetScope server OK by using the ip of 127.0.0.1 and it works ok, but I have to change the Net Scope server port to something different than 5403. But it looks like Envisage is expecting port 5403, which I've changed, because to get Net Scope Server to start listening I have to change the port to something different due to a port is in use error.

Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks

Hi Craig,
I use the ScopeStuff #TFA1 adapter (see: http://www.scopestu ff.com/ss_ tfa1.htm). I also use a FR/FF with my DSI and this little filter holder does the trick, and it's priced right too!

Hope this helps,
