Hi everybody,

First of all congratulations to my friend Freddy for his new Calendar
records. I have one question for the "One Century" category... is it
possible to type the answer instead of write the answer? I did not see
Freddy's performance trying the record so I don't know if he wrote the
answer on a paper or if he typed the answer in the PC.

If someone knows please let me know.

Thanks.

Hello there Yusnier, and congrats once more for the Calendar Gold Medal.

I saw Freddy making official world record attempts
on the evening of Saturday 5 June and again,
on Monday 7th June 2010 at Magdeburg.
I remember that he only used the K-train and Memoriad programs in order to
achieve those records. Thus, no paper/pen involved at all.

Other competitors can confirm that information as well.

Dear Mr Rai Jain,

You can have a visit to my website willemboumanrekenen.nl. There are articles in
English. For multiplication you can see the cross method. This is not advanced,
but every qualified mental calculator uses it. And there is more.
If after having studied questions remain, feel free and drop me a line.

Good evening Priyanshi. Firstly, my heartiest congratulations on your amazing
performance in Magdeburg. I was wondering if there is any possibility we might
see you at the World Championship too? It is being held in London on August 26th
as part of the Mind Sports Olympiad. Please feel free to drop me a line if you'd
like me to say more about it - or you can check the website at
www.boardability.com. Do please give it a thought. Regards, George Lane.

Hello again,

I am very sorry, but my (mental) computer just encountered a bug. The
URL to my mathletics-page should end on .php and not on .htm -
therefore it should be

http://www.werbeka.com/mathleti/mathlet/mathletd.php

I would nevertheless enjoy it very much, if you would give it a try,
so that there were some "real good" results on the highscorelist.

My best wishes to you once more...

Hmm... I'll put it to the rest of the group, but I'm not sure it would raise

Well dear fellow calculators,

Please tell me to which tournament you can travel free of charge. And if so, yes
a lot of people, qualified or not, would surely come.

Hello George,

it might happen that I am in London at the end of August - and then it
would be a pleasure to participate in the World Championship - it
would be nice to meet some biggies, and maybe I could give them a
match for a place amongst the top ten in addition...

I have seen the date for Mental Calculation being Aug. 26th, but no
further explanation about exact times, rules, etc. Could you, please,
notify me, when there is more information available?

Let me also put a word in favour of Mathletics on my homepage. It is
pure calculation - but the results are translated into track and field
results. The idea behind is mainly to make people understand that a
world record in Mental Calculation is as good as a world record in
high jump or 100 m...

The page is only available in German - but it is just about numbers,
so there is no understanding necessary, other than that Dreisprung is
Triple jump, Stabhochsprung is Pole Vault, etc.

You find it at http://www.werbeka.com/mathleti/mathlet/mathletd.php

I hope to see you in a couple of months - until then my best wishes
Bernhard

Dear Mr Werbeka,

of course irt can be that I do something wrong, but your system is reacting very
slowly on my answers.

What to do after an answer? Return? Space bar?
I have no idea.

Willem, That is true but it is much easier for most people on this list to
get to tournaments held in Europe or thereabouts than for me or people from
ASIA. I had to find a group in the states to sponsor me. Otherwise, even with
the generous cash prize I won, I would have been set back at least a thousand
between airfare, lost work time etc.

Gerald,

I don't trivialize.

A school in my area raised $3,100 through a bake sale for orphans.
http://blog.islamicreliefusa.org/2010/05/california-school-children-raise-money.\
html

Here are other schools who raised anywhere from $1,200 to $60,000 by thinking
outside the box rather than accepting their "fate."
http://www2.scholastic.com/browse/article.jsp?id=3752354

Take my suggestion or leave it, that's fine. But don't assume the worst of me.
I'll do the same regarding you.

Mr Newport: It is, as you so rightly say, not nice to trivialise a concern. Such
as running an international mind sports event. Money is indeed important, but it
is not the be-all-and-end-all of everything. Perhaps, rather than portray an
event that you have never attended in such a negative frame, you might like to
stop & consider the prestige of the title of World Champion. Like those who
travel from Singapore, Korea, Australia, and yes, even India. These competitors
know there is little or no money to be won, yet still they come. More often than
not, they come in the knowledge that there is no title at stake. If you are
unable to post a message in a more positive light then I suggest you seriously
consider posting nothing. Regards, George Lane - four times Mental Calculations
World Champion.

Dear Mr. Bouman,

thank you for your feedback.
Yes - after a full answer you have to press Return. In high jump and
pole vault you have even to use "<- (arrow to the left)" after
answering every row, if you are calculating from left to right. But
that is the same for all contestants and actually doesn't influence
the ranking order.

Then, of course, it works over the internet, which can vary a little
in speed. It is as in a 100 m run, sometimes you have the wind in the
back and sometimes against. But there are still world records set on
100 m.

If you try a couple of times, the possible variation in speed will be
excluded, unless you have a very slow connection. Then it would be a
real handicap. In all other cases I think it is rather fair for most
people. Of course it isn't any supervised contest, where all the
contestants get the same figures to answer. But a 100 m run isn't
either, as I said before.

Ik wens jou nog veel plezier in Mathletics en dat je nog vele records

Dear Jerry,

To be a mental calculation prodigee is an expensive business. No one is
interested in our abilities and if so the payment is very low. A lecture for a
university pays ? 100,= bruto! So travelling etc is on your own expense!

Willem

Willem, That is true but it is much easier for most people on this list to get
to tournaments held in Europe or thereabouts than for me or people from ASIA. I
had to find a group in the states to sponsor me. Otherwise, even with the
generous cash prize I won, I would have been set back at least a thousand
between airfare, lost work time etc.

Hello,

Do you have photos, videos or newspaper articles of the Mental Calculation World
Cup in Magdeburg? I would be grateful if you could send them to me or upload it
on the web (and tell me the URL). As usual, I would like to compile a CD with
all photographs taken at the MCWC.

Best Wishes,
Ralf

Willem,

You are unfortunately correct. I plan to donate some time to help raise
money so we can fund the best competitors from long distances to future
competitions. It is too late to help with the August event this year but there
will be future opportunities.

George,

I just won a world championship category myself. It is easy for you to fault
me when your event is in your own backyard. You couldn't even make it to Germany
but you fault me for bringing up the cost of going to these events from places
like my home and India.

Such as running an international mind sports event. Money is indeed important,
but it is not the be-all-and-end-all of everything. Perhaps, rather than portray
an event that you have never attended in such a negative frame, you might like
to stop & consider the prestige of the title of World Champion.

If I may, I don't think the issue is about one not attending or about holding
records, but rather it's about painting an issue as though it's someone else's
problem when it is not. I think George's point is many people are in your
shoes, but figure out a way to fix the matter rather than complaining to others
as though it's their responsibility to fix it for them, or they just don't go
without faulting others. Doing so would trivialize just how hard (including
financially) it is for someone to organize a competition like this. I, for
instance, will not be able to attend because of financial reasons too. No
biggie. I just plan for the next one.

Such as running an international mind sports event. Money is indeed important,
but it is not the be-all-and-end-all of everything. Perhaps, rather than portray
an event that you have never attended in such a negative frame, you might like
to stop & consider the prestige of the title of World Champion.

Mr Newport: I am fully aware of your World CUP category win (as opposed to World
CHAMPIONSHIP as wrongly claimed by yourself). You have my congratulations on
your World CUP success. Had you the decency to ask either myself or Ralf Laue,
you would already know that I had entered the World CUP in Magdeburg but had to
withdraw because of new employment. Had I taken time off at such short notice
after such a brief period, well - you are worried about losing a week's pay; I
would have lost my whole job. I shall, however, still have the opportunity to
enter the event at the Mind sports Olympiad. Small it may be, but it is still
the World Championship. I also notice you avoided the matter of those who do
actually attend the British event from overseas, except to tell me that it costs
them money, a point I made to you already. If you have any more garbage to
unload onto this group, that is up to you; however I shall now be deleting any
messages bearing your
name without opening them. Yours in utter disgust, G. Lane.

Dear fellow calculators,

You all know: I am not a native English speaker, so it can be that some delicate
nuances are beyond my understanding.

But what I read in the correspondence between Jerry newport and George Lane,
this sounds very disageeable to me.

I think we should do our best, even in sharp difference in opinions, we should
express in a more diplomatic way of usage of language.

Bethink: spoken - or written - words are like arrows been shot, you can never
retract them.

Regards,

Willem Bouman

To everyone in this group,

I am thoroughly ashamed of what has been written by Mr Lane. As well as being
rude in the extreme, and to a person he has never even met (not that that would
excuse anything), Mr Lane compounds his unforgiveable behaviour with a series of
claims that are not true. He then follows this up with a second diatribe that is
so embarrassing I don't know where to begin.

As someone who is also "involved" with the Mind Sports Olympiad, and hence the
"Mental Calculations World Championship", the purpose of this (now longer)
response is to set the record straight.

George Lane has absolutely nothing to do with the "running of an international
mind sports event". He is a competitor in the "Mind Sports Olympiad" that has
been held annually in the UK since 1997 (mainly in London) and has involved
himself in the format and promotion of the mental calculations event.

When the Mind Sports Olympiad was launched, competitors were numbered in the
thousands, and titles meant something, but sadly, due to lack of sponsorship and
a zero marketing budget, it has effectively become a club for the couple of
dozen people who each year enter most of the events held over the 10 days of the
tournament. Despite the top performances being outstanding, the number of
entrants in most events is less than 10, and these are mainly entrants who have
paid one fee to compete in as many events as they can, therefore, even with this
small field, half the competitors are there to make up the numbers. There is the
occasional new person entering but that is it.

Mr Lane has also not responded to repeated requests regarding the structure of
the event in the Mind Sports Olympiad. The format had traditionally been, one
paper of four hours duration with competitors presented with a series of
additions, subtractions, multiplications, and divisions (of increasing
difficulty). These are followed by some fractions, factors and roots, and the
paper is completed with some cross currency calculations and a few written
dates. There is no ceremony, it is an exam.

As to people turning up from all over the world, there are a couple of people
who still fly in from, e.g., the US and South Africa for their specialty event,
competing in fields of eight or less (that is their choice). For mental
calculations, Gert Mittring travels over from Germany (as did Willem Bouman from
the Netherlands in 2009). It is pleasing that these two gentlemen came first and
third, respectively. There were no other international competitors.

Therefore, the event may still be called a world championship but it has long
given up the pretence of being the world championship. I am reminded of boxing
where there at least three different world championships for a given weight. To
me, and many others, the Mental Calculation World Cup now carries the crown,
together with the Memoriad (at which you also did not compete – why did you miss
this event?).

After the 2009 Mind Sports Olympiad, two committees were formed between the
organisers and interested competitors to revitalise the event, technology wise,
and publicity / marketing, etc. Mr Lane was a member of the second committee as
was I. My involvement in the organisation is therefore comparable to Mr Lane's
and I have only ever considered myself someone who is keen to see the tournament
survive and grow. For Mr Lane to claim that he is involved in "running an
international mind sports event" is an insult to the real organisers who have
invested ever so much time and money into keeping it alive, motivated only by an
altruistic love of mind sports in general. These people have "invested" tens of
thousands of pounds in the venture.

Finally, a message to Mr Lane. You make your apology in respect of 2010,
however, you were also a no show in 2008 (why – on that occasion?). Once could
be forgiven, but twice is totally unfair to the competitors who were denied the
opportunity to compete had you not kept your place open `til the last. I, too,
am in a new job, but my employers were delighted for me and gave me the time
off. If you were really that keen you could have flown in on Saturday morning
and back on Monday evening. I am sure your new employer would have given you one
day off?! You also cost the organisers money, they having made provision for
you.

As to your attacks on Mr Newport, he is more a man than you (or us) will ever
be, and was an inspiration to the rest of the competitors in Magdeburg. We all
are thrilled to have such a talented new friend. He made every effort to get
there, including fund raising, and was one of the top three competitors at the
tournament. His polite response to you is testament to his good manner.

In conclusion, I was going to suggest that you carefully consider what you wrote
in your first email and apologise profusely, but after the second text, I think
you should simply stick to your WORLD (does your use of capitals mean you are
shouting?!) championship, and the rest of us will stick to ours. I will be
forwarding your emails to the organisers of the Mind Sports Olympiad for them to
decide what further action they will take. You have been an embarrassment to
them (without their knowledge), and all I can say to the readers of this missive
is that I hope your impressions of the rest of the Mind Sports Olympiad have not
been tarnished by Mr Lane's unprovoked and regrettable outbursts.
