Spyware in 2005 ~ Scot's Newsletter
http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/66.htm
The spyware, and anti-spyware, landscape has changed significantly
since I wrote reviews of Ad-Aware and SpyBot back in February 2003 and
August 2003, respectively. For one thing, spyware has gone from being a
nuisance that occasionally bit some people hard to being a threat that
can bite just about anyone hard, every day of the week. Spyware is a
much bigger deal than it used to be. Many of us have learned to our
chagrin that a firewall and antivirus program aren't enough to protect
us from everything nasty.

Prepairing to Install XPSP2 by Murray White
Here is what you will want to do when preparing for the SP2 install
1. Clean all spyware-- the spycleaners you will need are these three--
Spyware blaster 3.2, SpyBot Search & Destroy 1.4 and Adaware SE 1.03
2. Clean temp and temp internet files--I like the proggie Crap Cleaner
& HD Valet
3. Update and run your AntiVirus and run online scans with Housecalls
and Panda.
4. disable LAN in Network Conections
5. run chkdsk and do a defrag
6. uncheck all except keyboard (if special) and mouse (if special) and also
move icons from the Startup folder on the start menue>all programs to
a "disable startup folder"
Here are links for the msconfig items so you know what each is and whether
it is required at startup.
http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php?
http://guidaworld.com/startups_all/startups_all.htm
http://www.tasklist.org/
7. Reboot the computer and check to see all items have been disabled
-- look in notification tray.
8. Install SP2 selecting what you want to occur regarding OE, firewall
etc. if prompted.
9. Reboot and run defrag
10. check some programs such as wordpad, image files etc to be sure they
operate correctly.
11. Recheck items you want in msconfig startup and put back items in the
startup folder on the start menu.
12. reboot the computer
13. Enable LAN
14. Open OE and make sure email is ok and the way you want it, surf the
net and log into messaging service(s).

Total Copy free
http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/13/9/13-9-74.shtml
Total Copy is a handy shell extension, that allows you to pause and resume
file copies under Windows. It integrates into the right click menu and
becomes available whenever you drag files or folders to copy them. You can
also limit the copy speed, if needed.
Total Copy also speeds up the overall copy process.
The program does not modify the default copy function, but rather installs
as an additional option.
Features:
- Pause / Resuming : At any time you may pause the copy-prosess, and
continue later.
- Auto-pause on any error : If you run out of disk space, the network goes
down,
or some other error occurs, copying is automatically paused, and you may
resume when the error is sorted out.
- Resuming on Power Failure : If the computer is turned off during the copy
prosess
(ex. power-loss or system-crash), Total Copy lets you resume when you
restart.
- Speed limit : Slows down the copy prosess, and frees resources to other
tasks.
- Faster than Windows : Copies slightly faster than Windows (approx. 10%
locally, and 1% on network)
- Small improvements : Shows copy-speed, a percent-bar and KBytes remaining.
- Does not modify Windows' own copy-function : This program will not alter
the existing windows-copy-function.

Win Tab free
http://www.rblevin.net/WinTab.htm
WinTab is a tiny tool that emulates the keyboard combination of Win+Tab.
Pressing the Windows (Win) key on a PC keyboard causes the Start Menu and
Taskbar to appear. Pressing Win+Tab calls up the Windows Taskbar, without
displaying the Start Menu.
By using WinTab, you can use a single key to call up the Taskbar, instead of
having to press Win+Tab every time. This is handy and certainly more
comfortable for users (like me) who [A] don't keep their Taskbar on top of
other windows, [B] use Auto-Hide, [C] use a resized Taskbar (i.e., larger),
or [D] any mix of A, B, and C.

Karen's Directory Printer v5.0 free
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptdirprn.asp
No more fumbling with My Computer or Windows Explorer, wishing you could
print information about all your files. Karen's Directory Printer can print
the name of every file on a drive, along with the file's size, date and time
of last modification, and attributes (Read-Only, Hidden, System and
Archive)! And now, the list of files can be sorted by name, size, date
created, date last modified, or date of last access.

Total Uninstall 2.34 free
http://www.martau.com/tu.html
OS: Win95 OSR2, Win98, WinMe, WinNT, Win2000, WinXP.
Total Uninstall can help you to monitor any changes that were made to your
system during installation of a new software product.
It allow you to perform a complete uninstall without having to rely on the
supplied uninstall program which may leave files or changes behind.
To use it, you simply launch the installation program from the Total
Uninstall interface and select the system areas to be monitored. The program
will then create a snapshot of your system before it installs the new
software and an additional snapshot after install completes. It then
compares the two snapshots and displays all changes in a graphical tree
view, marking all values and/or files that have been added or changed. Total
Uninstall will save these changes and if you decide to uninstall the
application, it will reverse the changes to the previous state.

End Task To Solve System Lockup
Did a program on your Windows XP system just lock up?
Chances are, you can get back to work without rebooting.
Simply end that task.
Press Ctrl-Alt-Del on your keyboard to open the Task Manager.
On the Applications tab, you should see one item that reads
"Not Responding" under Status
(if not, you will in a few seconds try closing and re-opening the Task
Manager).
Select that application, click End Task and you'll see a message telling you
the selected application is not responding. Click End Now then wait as
Windows
ends the task.
You should be able to re-open that application and get back to work.
(Note: Unfortunately, in some cases, the above steps won't work
and you'll need to reboot entirely.)

Anti-adware Misses Most Malware By Brian Livingston
http://windowssecrets.com/050127/
Now that 80% of home PCs in the U.S. are infected with adware and spyware,
according to one study, it turns out that nearly every anti-adware
application on the market catches less than half of the bad stuff.
That's the conclusion of a remarkably comprehensive series of anti-adware
tests conducted recently by Eric Howes, an instructor at the University of
Illinois.
Howes, a well-known researcher among PC security professionals, collected 20
different anti-adware applications. He then infected a fresh install of
Windows 2000 SP4 and Office 2000 SP3 with several dozen adware programs in
separate stages. Finally, he counted how many active adware components were
removed by each anti-adware product.
