5 Miners Rescued From Siberian Mine
May 26, 2005
Russian miners trapped underground Thursday by a collapse in a coal mine in the Kemerovo region were rescued and returned to the surface safe and sound, Russian news agencies reported.
“None of the miners was hurt. Their condition is satisfactory even though they spent over six hours underground,” an emergency official told the ITAR-TASS news agency.
Rescuers dug a tunnel in the Taldinskaya-Yuzhnaya mine to reach them, said Tatyana Zholobova, an Emergencies Ministry spokeswoman in Kemerovo, about 3,000 kilometers (1,850 miles) east of Moscow.
Emergency workers also opened up air passages to ensure that the miners could breathe, the Interfax news agency reported.
Accidents are common in the Russian coal industry, which since the breakup of the Soviet Union has lacked public and private funds to invest in safety equipment and technical upgrades.
