The 7D (+ vertical grip if you can find /want one) is almost identical
in operation to the 7, and can be had for a song these days. Drawbacks
are first black frame problem, focusing speed and precision, and higher
age (which may not be a problem).
The only cameras with 7-style interface are the 7D and a700 (and a900),
and of those two, the 7D is far more 7-like. The other cameras have only
one control wheel.
Of the cameras mentioned (7D, a100, a300) I think the a300 is the most
versatile, but the 7D is by far the most controllable. The 5D is cheap,
of course, but for me the price difference to get a 7D would be well
worth it -- even though they have the same sensors (and largely the same
feature set).
