Hi I have a X-700 and a X-370 and several lenses plus other goodies in the
camera bag.I have a couple of questions . What is the best Flash for both
camera? What is the best lense that is about 500mm? I would love to get some
good nature photos. Thank you
Heather
A Minolta web page would be fantastic, if someone would donate all that time
and energy, and expense. If you do let us all know, and, I would think that
most will help if thay can.

Dear Greg
We do not get subjected to Frye's here in Australia but I'm sure we have
many stores that have casual staff who don't really know the product that
they are selling, good luck.

Dear Steve
Yes, I agree the warranty repair can be frustrating. Have you asked the
assistants at the camera shop you bought the camera what might be the
problem? They might be able to suggest what might be going wrong without
you having to give up your camera for while.

Thanks for asking. Yes, it persists. I hate to take it in for repairs on the
warranty (seems to me
no one is in a hurry to get it back out and I hate to be without it). But
perhaps that is the
answer. I was just asking around to see if anyone with the same camera (Minolta
400si) had the same
problem.

Sounds good to me.Ive written a couple of pages for different organisations.
I figured that we have a great camera and why not have a web page that all can
share in.
So to kick the ball rolling maybe we could throw up some ideas to the list of
what people would like to have on it..
I figured a Gallery for list users pics, Photoshop help/hints, link to this
list, models of minoltas with user reviews.
Reply to the list any ideas so we can all share...
I'll throw it open.....

I think the problem may be mechanical although the low lighting
conditions may trick the camera into thinking there is enough light to
focus just as the conditions are. Has the problem persisted?

Great to belong to the list.
I have a question if anyone can help me. I have a Minolta 400si which has given
me
good service for six months. However, in medium light in the Portraiture
setting, it
seems to have trouble finding the focus - I hear ta zzz-zzz while it goes in and
out
but without finding the proper focus and without becoming ready to shoot the
frame.
In the beginning, with insuficient light it did the proper rapid-repeat flash
(built-in) until the right focus was found, but it hasn't done that in a long
time.
Is this standard, or do I have a mechanical problem?

Yeah it is working but I think people have been a bit quiet at the moment,
including myself.

I don't think it does have the ability but I haven't mastered the thing yet
I have had it for 3 months. The first month of that I used it taking
holiday snaps in Italy on my honeymoon. The pictures turned out well, not
much variation though, I used it in fully automatic mode all the way.

I haven't done any double exposures, but my 8000i has that capability, though
it may be through one of their cards. Big deal you say, I haven't got an
8000i. Well I was going to trade my 8000i in on a used 700si and the best I
could get was around $150. I was shocked, and no I'm not selling it for
anywhere neer that, in fact I'm just going to keep it as a backup or second
camera. But the point is, older top of the line models can be bought new for
a pitance. Yes for some that $200 is big money but if someone was serious
they could find a way.
anyway perhaps your Minolta will have that capability,

Thanks for the vote of approval on our "ramblings", Vivian. Unfortunately,
I don't know about taking double-exposures with the Maxxum cameras. Mine is
a 400si and I've only had that for a few months. I have taken double
exposures with a few of the manual Minolta cameras I own but don't know if
it's possible with a Maxxum.
I used to do some black and white printing myself though it's been several
years since I've done that. Perhaps I'll try doing that again in the not
too distant future. It probably won't happen this year, though. I no
longer have an enlarger or anything so I'd have to buy everything new.
What's a good easy-to-use enlarger? In the meantime, are there any good
mail order firms that develop and print B&W but don't charge an arm and a
leg?
I want to develop some themes of my own to help myself get back into the
photography of things as it were. Sometimes I go for awhile without really
taking too many photos and I want to just quit that and get out and take
some photos. I also want to start going through my slides and arrange them
and do some pruning and print up some of my more favorite photos.
As to what I've used, I used to mostly use slides but then got away from
that and have shot mostly print film the last several years. I think I
prefer slides, though, so I'm going back to using those mostly except for
certain occasions. I think I'm going to shoot about a half-dozen rolls of
different film soon so I can decide on what I like best. I remember I
always thought I got gorgeous pictures with Agfa film though that doesn't
seem to be too common around here anymore.
I don't anymore but back in the 70's, I belonged to a local camera club and
we put on annual photo shows where we hung our photos in a shopping mall.
We also had a professional come, judge our photos and award ribbons. My
best year was one year when I got two ribbons. I got an honorable mention
ribbon for a photo I'd shot of a clown down in Opryland (Nashville,
Tennessee) but I got one of 3 first-place blue ribbons for a photo I took of
my collie Danny. It was a close-up of just his face. In it, his head is
cocked and he's looking quizzically at me. I took it while emitting odd
sounds to get his attention. One person asked me how I got the light to
shine on his face that way, but it was just a nice sunny day and it was with
available light, no fill or anything. I still have that photo (and hundreds
more of Danny) but I still miss him.
Speaking again briefly of the Maxxum, I do need to get another lens or two
as I only have a 35-70mm zoom right now. I want a stronger lens (maybe
around a 70-200 zoom) and maybe even a Macro lens. I also should probably
get an electronic flash for it. Finally, I need a new tripod. I had a
Vivitar one and, I swear, I only used it a few times and then one of the
plastic snaps just broke clean off. I think I'll go with a company known
for their tripods next time, maybe Bogen or Slik...

Hi
I am Vivian, I created this list purely because there was no where to be
"rambling like this", I am enjoying the discussion please continue, make
yourself at home.
Besides the above does anyone have any tips on doing double exposure shots.
I have a Minolta 500si with 62mm 28-80 lens.
Regards
Vivian

I shoot b/w mostly and then slide once in a while prints. Life is full of
compromises and photography is just one huge pile of compromise. I like b/w
and have my own darkroom. That way I can take my tiny pictures and make them
look as if I knew what I was doing. Like it looks as if I was only standing a
few feet away, which is some cases I am. I get into the infield at the race
tracks I do, and yes it is exciting, and yes it is dangerous. Probly more
dangerous then driving.
I have been using the Ilford xp2 and the cn b/w c-41 processing film from
kodak. It cost me 1.86 for delvelopment of 24 exposures, and I get it back in
an hour. Can't beet that but I'm going to start going back and doing my own
for my other pictures. I like to do things like old towns, houses, andything
that may have a theme.
If you really want to do something that you wanto get published try doing the
unussul
so you wont have too much compotition. Of course that something must be
something that you are excited about doing.
I think I'm going to like this forum, as much as I like my Minolta cameras,
and that's a lot.
Should we be rambling like this or should we/i keep this strickly minolta
based, and technicall??? I do have a heap of questions.
larry
Larry, my one autofocusing lens is even more limiting than yours as mine is
just a 35-70mm zoom. I definitely want to get a longer zoom
eventually...maybe I'll buy myself one as a Christmas gift. At least you
sound like you have some definite things to shoot. For me, it's tough just
coming up with interesting things to photograph. I think starting next week
I'll just have to force myself to get out there at least one day a week and
find things to shoot.
By the way, what kind of film do you use? Color? B&W? Prints? Slides?
I've been using mostly color print film the last few years but think I may
revert soon to color slide film which I used to use most of the time. I
also want to do more serious B&W portraiture.
Roger
I am writing this off the top of my head so please take that into
consideration, if there are any english teachers out there.
I just joined yesterday, 10-19, and I have a Minolta 101, which i just got
about a year ago. But my main camera has been a 8000i, however it is now my
backup as I just bought a 800si.
I shoot a lot of short track racing and road races, as well as my boys sports:
socker and basket ball.
So far my only lens for the 800 and 8000 is a 35 - 105. yes that limits me
and perhaps I should have bought a longer lens before the 800si body but I
wanted to try out the auto focus etc.
Which I have done, but so far am mildly disapointed. I say only mildly beause
I've not used it enough to realy make a decision yet.
I'm not complaining just being honest. I believe I'm going to looooove it.
Especially the flash.
I better send this because aol is getting ready to kick me off-line.
First though I write a column for a local paper on racing and have had a few
pictures published. I make my money working for GM in POntiac mi. as an
electrician.
I'm 58 and have 5 kids the youngest is 11.
I'm new so I hopoe this fits with the email schemm of things, if not we will
adjust acordingly,
Next time I will have a lens question.
see yaa

I was going to wait until we got more members or to see if anyone else would
start posting (I joined, I think, the day before yesterday but have received
no posts yet apart from the welcoming message) but I may as well go ahead
and post my first message anyway.
I've been using Minolta cameras since 1974. My first SLR was the Minolta
SRT-102. While I no longer have it, I do still have a few of my original
lenses for it. I also bought used an SR-1 and wound up giving that to a
friend. A few other Minolta cameras I no longer have are the Minolta XK (my
first Minolta camera to break down, guess I got a bad one) and an X-700
which I bequeathed upon my niece Rebecca a few years ago.
My current Minolta collection listed in the order I got them...
XD-11--Until recently, my most-used camera.
Freedom AF-35--My point-and-shoot, the one camera I carry with me most of
the time if I'm not taking one of my SLRs.
X-370n--Bought it as an extra 35mm body upon giving my niece the X-700.
Hi-matic 7--This old rangefinder (from the 1960's, I understand) is one I
only came across earlier this year.
Maxxum 400si--I got this just a month or so ago and I'm still feeling my way
along with this, my first autofocusing SLR. It's already become my favorite
camera as I just love the feel of it. Once I thoroughly learn all it's
functions, I hope to just get out there and take tons of photos.
Strangely, when I bought an APS camera, I didn't get a Minolta but a
Fujifilm camera. I basically got the cheapest model possible to just test
the waters of APS photography. I will get a Minolta with a zoom lens if and
when I decide to step up to a better APS camera.
Well, that's my first post. Anyone else?
Roger
