The filing system/operating system/basic interpreter/etc were all written in-house.
New firmware, assuming it runs in the same CPU, can be flashed without board replacement. Although, the units would have to be sent back in for re-programming and then returned.
Yes, the rubber feet are for desktop use to keep it elevated.
