Computer Musicians ...
Here's a site that has a lot of good info and many contacts and links.
It is a group dedicated to MIDI, but some of the technical info and
links can be useful for anyone that has a music interest. It is a large
site with many nooks and crannies, but is fun to poke around and see
what is going on.
It is called the Midiots - Some of you may have already visited, but it
changes often.

What kind of computer-based plugins, do you use to master your music. I've used T-Racks but it makes some strange phase-errors on the negative part of a soundwave. Does anyone use directx-plugins to master their music through?? Has anyone tried the Behringer Ultramizer?

I have 2 takers -
If I get 3 more, I will bid $79 + shipping each ($395 for the lot).
BTW: http://www.casio.com has some more info on these.
next time ...
I personally use the Casio CTK 631. What do we need to take advantage of the
auction? Let me know, I would like to be counted in. What's the cost per
person?

TO: Mr. Speigt
CD cover art and notes can be produced in many ways. None are
expensive unless you want an original painting or drawing done.
Most CD covers are combinations of reductions of photographs, line art,
print and standard graphics. A very nice cover of all of the above can be
prepared
ready for printing for way under $50. If you want limited copies, you can
print
them yourself on most computers for the cost of paper and ink(.40 to
.90cents). If you want 500 plus, then you will need press printing for
greater economy.
The same procedure applies to duplication. Once the master is supplied(music
and label art)you can get about 100 CDs for $325(not including the jewell
cases, covers etc discussed above). Those who do this are using the
recordable CDs of course, and not the stamped CDs you buy in stores; but
the product can be just as high quality in sound, and beautiful to the eye.
I hope this can be of help. Questions: (619)692-4169

FROM: Dick Smith KENT AUDIO San Diego California
I am responding to a musician's need for reasonably-priced master
recording, editing, mixdown, professionally produced covers, artwork,
inserts and labeling. We have been doing this since 1972 in the CD
format, and since 1965 for LP records. The CDs we create are very
fine audiophile recordings, and the artwork is impeccably matched to
the needs of the performers. Samples are available for your eyes and ears
if you are in the San Diego area.
I am a young (retired) recording engineer and teacher offerring the
above services at about one third the cost of studios; but only for
experienced musicians.
Although we have served mostly classical musicians, we have worked
with many types of soloists and groups in producing very fine quality
recordings for sale or posterity. We prefer professional recording
gear over computers in our work; but are not afraid of incorporating
all of the latest technology available.
An individual e-mail has been sent out to the individual making the
inquiry, and this general response to the music by computer group.

As a 'charter member' of the Music By Computer list I just want to say what a good idea this is! Have subscribed to other lists of computer music but can't say that I've seen much good in them. Lot of bickering on those other lists. Critical Musicology, for example, just shut down because nobody could agree about anything so no real information was shared.
To introduce myself a bit, I began composing on my computer about five years ago and then decided it would be a good idea to get a little formal education in the subject, even though I went to Juilliard in New York, I was in the dance department there, and so I'm currently studying music theory and composition up in Portland. I drive up a couple times a week. One nice thing about computer music is that I can email it to my teacher. Especially the large orchestral stuff. He gives it a listen and tells me what I need to hear as soon as I walk in the door with printed out pages in my hand.
I love all kinds of music from Phillip Glass to Country, Rock, Jazz, Bands, etc, although you would never know it if you listened to the work I've put on my site. (newly updated by the way although I am still working on fixing a couple of links.)
I am hoping to learn much from list members about composing music on the computer. I gather from the email so far that there is a wide range of styles, here. That can be very enriching. Also, would like very much to get feedback on original work. Hope there are those of you who will share your original work and will be open to informed critique based on careful listening.
I use Noteworthy Composer for all my work as I have found it to be very flexible and easy to use. And after five years of exploring NWC I have found that it pretty much can do everything I need it to do. If at some time in the future I begin to work at this as a professional, I will then consider upgrading to Finale or Sibelius. Just now however, those programs are too spendy for my tight budget.
In fact, the big thing that bugs me about computer music is not the software that the music is written on, (some have more bells and whistles than others, but one way or another they all seem to accomplish the same thing,) but the soundcards and speakers.
From what I can tell after listening to my own music on various friend's computers, you have to be really careful, do your homework and be prepared to spend a lot of money on the hardware just to get a decent sound.
Even then nothing is guaranteed.
I just listened to a couple of my pieces on a computer up in Boston, last week, and the Windows Media Player, (version 6, which on my machine sounds and reads great,) on my friend's machine didn't bother to read a couple of staffs and of the ones it did read, it ignored tempo markings and dynamics altogether. I was embarrassed to know that my work probably sounds distorted as heck on a whole lot of systems out there.
So these are a couple of issues I have... as well as expectations, or hopes if you will, about the direction the list might take.
I wish I had been able to fly down to San Diego for the first few meetings. Up here in Salem, Oregon I don't get to talk to many (?) musicians and composers. =(
So Welcome to us all and thanks Gary, for putting me on your list.

Computer Musicians ...
My ISP - Access1 - has been up and down like a yo-yo for the past month.
It still isn't stable, so I don't know if my e-mail is getting through.
But I have been able to establish a mailing list that doesn't depend on
them. I am hopeful that this message will be delivered.
The old onelist.com has a new name - egroups.com.
If you received this, you are on the list. You can send e-mail
questions, comments to the group simply by addressing -
MusicByComputer@egroups.com.
Also http://www.egroups.com/group/MusicByComputer is the url for our
website. We do have some space here for files. The space is limited so
probably would only support a single mp3 file, but could support a
number of midi files. There are quite a number of other facilities, such
as message archive and post, chat, etc. Take a look.
A meeting is in the works possibly at the Sonic Arts Gallery. 2961
Beech, for early May - One of the presentations will be on Sound Forge.
I will let you know the date and time as it is finalized.
