We've been using JEdit to script surveys for about a year. Not
because of licensing fees but for other production reasons.
1) There is no real "Macro" facility in mrStudio. With JEdit we can
create complex macros that allow us to easily create metadata from
text questionnaires
2) The MDD is not a human readable file, and so can't be used with
code generation tools like CODESMITH or other internally produced
survey generators.
3) We cannot use DIFF tools to easily merge MDD's.
For these reasons we have developed a system of first creating the
survey (as an IVS file) with a code generating tool, then importing
the file into mrStudio, and running the survey in debug mode. At
this point we do all the edits in mrStudio.
We think the step by step debugging and Auto answer are a true
productivity gain, and would use mrStudio completely if we could,
but it is such a poor Text Editor that we would rather manage a more
complex process.
If SPSS ever licenses the survey player Lite engine separately from
mrStudio (as they might with the CAPI version) then maybe an
mrStudio free process would work.
