Hello Paleomamma!
Near Herkimer, I have hunted near the river that goes right past one of the Diamond mines - (the one with the KOA campground across the street). I think it is Rt. 28 North, or Middleville Rd. There are numerous fisherman's pulloffs near the stream, along 28, and you can find shale outcrops that have Triarthrus Trilo pieces and graptolites in them. There are also scraps of the material that the diamonds are in, and I have found some diamonds in that stuff, just looking in/along the river.
You might ask at the KOA, if they will let you in to walk the stream. When camping there I found a great little trilo (maybe Radnoria?) in a fist sized, round, hard rock that I just split on a whim. I found it right along the stream there, at the bend in the river, on the side opposite the campground.
Next closest place would be Little Falls - just up the road along 167. Look that up on the internet for better directions. Great locality for the Triarthrus Trilobites.
Then, if you travel 28 south, towards Cooperstown, I had luck just past the little town of Fly Creek. Look for outcrops in road cuts along the LEFT hand side, heading south - Lots of various invertebrate fossils, and crinoid stem pieces. Then if you go as far as Cooperstown, just as you are descending down a hill toward it on 28, there was a river that has a dirt pulloff on the RIGHT hand side (a retaining pond of some kind is on the LEFT!)- found a few good boulders of a sandstone like material that had BEAUTIFUL, well detailed impressions of all kinds of Invertebrates. Gastropods, brachiopods, pelycypods, and a Greenops trilo tail shield. Some corals and crino stems as well!
Also, Found some cool bluish shale around Mount Vision, NY, along a road there near a campground,... that had great impressions of lots of invertebrates, some with the whitish mother of pearl looking color still on them!
Hope this helps,... good luck, and be sure to let us know about your finds!
Tim,... aka Fossildude19
