Would you please comment on any of these items which Claire Stent
sent in?
1) Online Home Page
Search: Add NOT option to full text search instructions
In a special library, there is a limited variety of topics so
limiting searches with the boolean NOT is essential e.g we have a
huge number of books on surveys so patrons may want to search panel
surveys NOT health
Yes please!
2) Online Home Page
Search: For field searching, allow AND OR and NOT options for each
field. In a special library, there is a limited variety of topics so
limiting searches with the boolean operators is essential. Carrying
on from the
last example, panel surveys OR longitudinal surveys NOT health
Yes please!
3) Online Home Page
Search: Ability to search by format
Clients in a different geographical location want to see electronic
records only. Our library has concentrated on providing electronic
access for our branches because there is not always time to courier
material to their locations
Yes please!
4) Online Home Page
Search: fuzzy logic seems to be automatically turned on, give
clients the option of turning it on or off Annoys clients who know
what they are searching for. Comments such as "But I never searched
for that" are common
Yes please!
5) Online Homepage
Layout: allow comments box in table entry for Other databases
Not all databases are IP authenticated. It would be nice to
include the password for users. In addition, a database description
would be nice. Then we could market the Online Homepage as a one
stop shop. Currently, most clients come into the NOTEBookS suite of
databases from a library Homepage rather than the Online Homepage
for this reason.
Does this mean to make it more a portal for all our resources? If so, yes.
6) Current Homepage
Layout: allow other databases to be arranged by category
Current layout is ok for a few databases. However, when the list
gets longer, it is more difficult for clients to find the database
they want. A simple list of categories would help
7) Online Home Page
Duplicate removal option, serial records appear in both the Online
Catalogue and Serials catalogue Confusing for clients
Yes please!
