If you aren't a member of the Native Plant Society of Texas (NPSOT), please consider joining!

The membership form can be found at: http://www.npsot.org/application/application_form.html

As a member of NPSOT, you will receive the NPSOT News, a bimonthly publication of original articles on a range of subjects of potential interest to our members, such as: gardening with native species, destinations within Texas special for their native plants, non-technical research papers by eminent plant scientists, propagation notes, and news about public programs relating to natives.

The newsletter also includes a calendar of local, regional and national events, book reviews, and a resource list of nurseries and landscape professionals across the state specializing in native plants.

Your affiliation with the local chapter is included with membership. Just fill out the name of your local chapter (likely Austin or Williamson County) in the chapter affiliation line on the membership form. As always, our chapter meetings are free and open to the public (members and non-members alike).

For more information about membership, see http://www.npsot.org/application/benefits.html

Jackie Davis sent the following message our way:

Dorothy Mattiza will be at the LBJWC on Saturday, June 5, 11:00 am to
4:00 pm, for a book signing of her "100 Texas Wildflowers" and also to
display (and sell) her beautiful photographic images of the plants found
on her property at Gunsight Mountain.

I think you know about Dorothy: she was the 1st president of NPSOT and
ran a wholesale native plant nursery at her Gunsight Mountain acreage
outside of Tarpley, which is west of Bandera. For the last few years,
she has been making fantastic photographs of the flowers and leaves of
all of the plants at GM. They look so real that the first time I saw
them, I reached out to touch them, because I thought they were fresh
plant pressings!

Could you possibly send out an all-points bulletin via e-mail to NPSOT
folks in and around the Austin area, to encourage them to at least go
out to say "Hi" to Dorothy on the 5th? She will be there from 11:00 am
to 4:00 pm.

Dorothy has certainly been one of our Texas pioneers in promoting the
use of Texas native plants. I hope that, with your (and NPSOT's) help,
we can get people out there to show our appreciation of her dedication
to native plants!

Kathy McCormack of Travis Audubon sent the following our way:

Training Series for Songbird Festival Field Trip Co-Leaders

Would you be willing to co-lead a field trip at next May's Lago Vista
Songbird Festival, but don't think that you know enough about the birds
and other plants and animals in the Balcones Canyonlands National
Wildlife Refuge (BCNWR) ? Well, here's the opportunity that you've been
waiting for ! Over several months and at each meeting, we'll spend
about an hour reviewing species lists and field guides, then take a
short break, and then spend one-to-two hours in the field to reinforce
what we've learned. We will focus on the flora and fauna likely to be
present during the Festival, but information will also be provided on
the other species reported from the Refuge. Several guest instructors
will discuss the following potential topics (but please note that this
list is subject to change !):

· October - butterflies, grasses, BCNWR history/facts

· November - reptiles, trees, shrubs

· January - mammals, geology, climate/weather

· February - birds, amphibians, tips on how to co-lead field
trips, review tentative list of Festival field trip locations/schedules

· March - dragonflies, damselflies, flowers, birding by ear,
match Festival field trips with co-leaders, preliminary Festival
logistics (maps, keys/codes, radios, etc.)

· April - review all bird species (and answer any questions about
other flora and fauna) likely to be present during the Festival, final
Festival logistics, tour parts of the Refuge likely to be visited during
the Festival

Snacks will be provided in the classroom. Bring your own field guides
if you have them, but some will also be available to share. Don't
worry, there won't be a test at the end - but you'll definitely feel
more confident about your ability to help others enjoy the Festival.
This invitation is going out to the members of the Travis Audubon
Society, the Capital Area Master Naturalists (hours will count toward
the advanced training requirement), the Highland Lakes Master
Naturalists, the Highland Lakes Birding and Wildflower Society, the
Native Plant Society of Texas, and the Friends of Balcones Canyonlands
National Wildlife Refuge. Participants who co-lead a field trip at the
Songbird Festival will receive free registration, dinner at the Festival
Keynote Address, and one additional field trip at no charge (CAMN
members will also earn approved volunteer hours). Contact John Kelly
(jfkellyaustin51@..., (h) 331-8693), Jean Nance
(jnance@..., (h) 259-0299), or Kathy McCormack
(kathy.mccormack@..., (w) 895-7268) for meeting date/time
information. Come learn more about our closest National Wildlife Refuge
and support our closest annual Nature Festival !

two weeks away. There's still plenty of room and we'll take registration right
up to the start of the program. The conference is scheduled for September 15-17
and will be held at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.

It's really shaping up to be another wonderful program with speakers from all
across the country scheduled to discuss global, regional, and state plant
conservation issues. We will also begin development of a comprehensive plant
conservation action plan for Texas at this year's conference.

The conference agenda and registration form can be found at
http://www.wildflower.org/?nd=tpcc_schedule and
http://www.wildflower.org/?nd=tpcc. Please feel free to share this information
with anyone who is interested in plant conservation.

We hope you'll be able to join us this year for this important annual event.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Looking forward to seeing you at the conference in a couple of weeks!

A correction: the speaker's topic is Central Texas Grasses (not just
fall grasses)

Central Texas Grasses--Getting to Know Them Up Close and Personal.

Speaker Bob Harms will describe some of the common grasses of our
area. He'll show scanned images that enable him to give a very
detailed picture of them in bloom.
