[See below for details - Andrea]

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center is proud to announce the fifth annual
Texas Plant Conservation Conference to be held at the Wildflower Center,
September 14-16. This three-day conference provides a forum for the exchange of
information and ideas, the discussion of plant conservation issues, and an
opportunity to plan for the future of plant conservation in Texas. Last year's
conference, attended by more than 100 participants, brought together private
landowners, botanists, professionals, and academics from all regions of the
state to discuss strategies for conserving Texas' rare and endangered flora.

This year, speakers will discuss on-going rare and endangered plant research and
update conference participants on the status of these projects. Featured
speakers this year include Peggy Olwell, Bureau of Land Management, Jill
Parrish, National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, Dr. Sue Gardener-Sill, NABA
International Butterfly Park, and Dr. Tom Wendt, Plant Resources Center at UT
Austin. Conference participants will also be invited to review and comment on a
draft of a proposed statewide Comprehensive Plant Conservation Action Plan.

Attached is the complete program and registration form for your use and
convenience.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions. We are looking forward to
seeing you at the conference in September.

Greetings! By now, you’ve likely received the registration newsletter for our state’s native plant symposium to be held October 20-23 in Alpine/Fort Davis.  Because there is a limit on the number of participants this year, I urge you to send in your registration form and payment—sooner rather than later.  Several of us will be attending and it looks like a great program.  More about the event at our August 16th chapter meeting, and at http://npsot.org/events/FallSymposium/Symposium2005.htm .

Several changes have occurred at the state NPSOT organization. Please note the following in your records. The NPSOT mailing address (including for your symposium registration form) is now P.O. Box 2762 Georgetown, TX 78627. Phone service is being moved to a new office and will re-connect on August 3rd. Please use email to contact our acting state coordinator Dar Richardson. Monthly Trail Maintenance at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

Time: Arrive 9:00 a.m., work until 12:00 p.m.  (Some volunteers choose to continue working after lunch)

Location:        Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

805 N. Capitol of Texas Hwy.
Austin, Texas 78746

(512) 327-7622

www.wildbasin.org

The second Saturday of every month is Trail Maintenance at Wild Basin  Preserve. We start promptly at 9am with a brief orientation and safety talk, then we break up into teams and go out to work on the trails.

Activities include:

·        Repair and maintain the trail system

·        Remove exotic and invasive plant species

·        Prune vegetation alongside the trails

·        Collect trash

·        Clean main building

·        Various special projects.

Generally, we work to make Wild Basin’s trail system safe and useful for everyone to enjoy.

Safety and Other Considerations:

  • Participants should be able to hike over rugged terrain.
  • Participants MUST wear long pants and closed-toe shoes, preferably hiking boots.  They should wear clothing appropriate for outdoor work and weather conditions.  Long sleeved shirts, hats, and sunscreen may be desired for sun protection.
  • Participants should bring their own water bottles and packs to carry bottles and other personal gear as they walk.
  • Feel free to bring work gloves, although Wild Basin will provide any and all tools as needed for the workday.
  • Activity will occur rain or shine.
  • Those allergic to stinging insects or poison ivy should be prepared as necessary.  Nearest medical facility is approximately 30 minutes away.
  • Participants will be made aware of possible encounters with snakes, spiders, scorpions and other wildlife.

Note:  Trail Maintenance in Sept. will be on the 10th.

August 11, 2005

Greetings! I look forward to seeing you at next Tuesday’s NPSOT-Austin meeting. My husband, arborist Jon Ogden, will give a program on the care of trees in Central Texas, including pruning practices, issues of oak wilt, and related topics. Bring your questions!

I ask for your thoughtful consideration of certain business items prior to Tuesday. Our chapter has been asked to participate in/sponsor several educational events. To accept them, we will need to sign on an event coordinator, engage booth volunteers and/or make a decision regarding our sponsorship level. Please email me your interest in helping prior to Tuesday, 8/16; we will also ask for volunteers at the meeting. If enough people are interested, we will go forward. Otherwise, NPSOT-Austin will decline and lose these opportunities to spread the good word on native plants.

1) Texas Parks & Wildlife Expo: NPSOT interpretive volunteers (two at a time) needed for two to four hour shifts at the Wildscape portion of the Expo on Saturday, October 1st, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Free admission to the Expo and a T-shirt. Send me your available shift times and T-shirt size. (The state NPSOT has taken the EXPO on as a project among Central Texas NPSOT chapters, so our participation is not optional. I am coordinating volunteers from other chapters for Sunday’s event. Please assist our cause by signing up now!)

2) Festival de Plantas, community education event at Colorado River Park, Saturday, October 15th, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Our chapter must have an event coordinator in place by 8/16; will need two to four NPSOT volunteers to staff a display booth and the chapter is asked to contribute $250 to $500.

3) Coordinator to host the NICE program: Natives Instead of Common Invasives. If invasive plants get your goat, spearhead bringing this educational program to the Austin chapter and the chapter will receive a $200 grant from the state organization to launch it.

4) Speaker on native plants for Hudson Bend Garden Club on Wednesday, January 11th, 10-11 a.m.

I look forward to hearing from you! Best regards, Molly McDonald-Ogden, President, NPSOT-Austin

Hi all,

Dale Bulla made an announcement at the chapter meeting last night
about Bright Leaf and other Austin area parks/preserves that are
managed by Texas Parks and Wildlife possibly getting closed due to
budget cuts. We've heard this is going on statewide, not just in
Austin. We haven't been able to find much info on this, but there
will be 2 meetings in Austin next week that are open to the public.

Please help spread the word on these meetings and attend one or both
if you can!

Here is the meeting info:

MEETING #1:
Special Board Meeting
Date: Monday, August 22, 2005
Time: 6:30PM - 7:30PM CDT (GMT-05:00)
BOARD MEETING: Special meeting - Monday, Aug. 22nd at 6:30pm.
Brent Leisure from TPWD will meet with the board to discuss
TPWD's possible decision to let the park revert to the Austin
Community Foundation. All meetings are open to the public.
Meetings are held at the conference center (the Lucas house) at
4400 Crestway Drive.

MEETING #2:
TPWD Commission Hearing
Date: Wednesday, August 24, 2005
Time: 2:00PM - 6:00PM CDT (GMT-05:00)
TPWD Commission hearing. The agenda is not yet posted, but the
commission will consider the future of several parks, including
Bright Leaf. Attend the hearing and make your voice heard. Check
their website for directions to the Austin headquarters and for
the agenda.

Hi everyone,

There is a meeting about the Brodie Wild project tomorrow Tuesday 8/30
7pm at the Bethany Church adjacent to Brodie Wild. Anyone interested in
the project is invited to attend! (This is the meeting that was
announced at the last chapter meeting.)

It will a pretty informal meeting, and we'll discuss the draft project
plan and set the date of the upcoming September volunteer day. This
will be a good opportunity for everyone interested in the project to
reconnect and organize for activities this fall.

For background: The NPSOT Austin chapter, working with the City of
Austin Water and Wastewater Department and the Native Prairie
Association of Texas, is working on a project at Brodie Wild, a water
quality protection property at the corner of Slaughter Lane and Brodie
Lane. We plan to give educational field trips and do restoration on the
site. The site has a surprising variety of native plants species and
lack of exotics.

For more information (including the draft project plan and a plant
list), check out the web site at http://www.npsot.org/Austin/BrodieWild/ .

Thanks!
- Jason

Hi all,

We're having a Brodie Wild Work Day next Saturday 9/10 from 8am-noon.
We're going to start early to avoid some of the heat. Anyone
interested is invited!

Background: Brodie Wild is a water quality protection property at the
corner of Slaughter Lane and Brodie Lane. The Austin chapter of NPSOT
and NPAT are working with the City to do restoration at Brodie Wild and
use it to educate citizens about water quality and native plants. You
can read more about Brodie Wild at
http://www.npsot.org/Austin/BrodieWild/ .

We're planning on cutting some brush, cleaning up trash, find potential
locations for the kiosk and signs, and planning future work.

There is a limited supply of tools, so please bring what you can! We
can use hand saws for cutting trees, large tree pruners, normal pruners,
large containers, etc. to carry smaller cut items, etc. Bring gloves
and other protective clothing to protect yourself from scratches.

We recommend parking across the street or elsewhere, and using the
crosswalks across Brodie Land and Slaughter Lane to cross over to Brodie
Wild.

We'll bring some bottled water, but recommend you also bring your own
water and snacks just in case demand is greater than supply. We also
recommend you bring and apply insect repellent before you enter Brodie
Wild to avoid chigger bites.

NPSOT, NPAT, and City of Austin liability release forms will be provided
on-site, which we'll all need to sign before we start.

Feel free to email me any questions. If you can, email me that you are
coming so we can plan for supplies and water more accurately.

Thanks and hope to see you there for the fun!

Monthly Trail Maintenance at Wild Basin Wilderness Preserve

Date: Saturday, Sept. 10, 2005

Note:  Trail Maintenance in Oct. will be on the 8th.

I have a correction: The Burleson's place is actually northeast of Temple--a
little farther up the road than Belton.

I'm going to suggest that we meet at the exit before we head to their
place--that way we can caravan. Let me know at kirstiharms@... if you
are interested in going and I can give you directions.

Thanks,
Kirsti

Hi all,

Thanks to Jolyn Piercy, David Werth, Scott Lenharth, and Lisa Spangler for coming to the Brodie Wild work day on Saturday 9/10!

We cut ashe juniper in two areas, collected trash (mostly in the intermittent stream), and found two plants to add to the plant list (Scutellaria ovata (heart-leaf skullcap, a native forb) and Melia azedarach (Chinaberry, an invasive non-native tree)). We took a break and snacked on watermelon before we walked the site, looking at plants and doing a little cutting in other areas.

Afterward we went to Mr. Natural's for lunch (yum!) and did some planning for the future (listing seed to collect and plants to add).  In total we did 31 hours of volunteer work for the day.

We noticed that there was a significant amount of bare ground after we cut a thicker area of ashe juniper.  In the future, we are planning on spreading native forb and grass seed in these areas after we finish cutting and dragging the woody plants away through the area.

Thanks again to the volunteers for coming!  We hope more people can make it next time.

Dear Austin NPSOT members:

I have a glut of the beautiful native Poinsettias in my garden. If you
would like to have some stop by my house before the meeting on Tuesday
night, Sept. 20. I'll have pots and soil handy. Any time after 5:30 is
fine, and maybe have some iced tea in the garden as well.

Address: 6311 Maury Hollow (78750) in Lakewood off 360

Hope to see some of you!
