On Saturday, November 7th, I will be leading a tour of a 137 acre property
(Fossil Hill) in Montague County, south of Bowie and on the edge of Amon Carter
Lake. The property is a virgin Western Cross Timbers site owned by Texas Master
Naturalist Jeanne Erickson and her husband Wayne of Fort Worth. She has been a
Cross Timbers chapter member since 1999.

Her property is one of the research areas for the Ancient Cross Timbers
Consortium based out of the University of Arkansas. Go to
http://www.uark.edu/misc/xtimber/ for more information on her property. I also
have a document describing her property. It you want a copy, please ask for one.
This will be a mostly all day tour/plant walk. Leave at your own convenience.
Bring a lunch and fluids with you.

We will meet at 8:45am and leave promptly at 9:00am from the TXDOT highway rest
stop on Highway 287 northwest of Decatur. The rest stop is on the right side of
the highway approximately 3.5-4.0 miles north of Decatur after you pass the
intersection of highway 287 and Loop 380. It takes about 30 minutes to reach
Fossil Hill from the rest stop.

Please RSVP if you want to attend. Email me back if you want a plant list and a
document describing the Fossil Hill property.

Notes:   Starting the summer in drought conditions seems to be the new normal but landscapes will remain beautiful and colorful with native plants which require less water, fertilizer and little or no pesticides. Dottie Woodson will discuss her favorite native plants that beat the heat and keep on blooming, and other water conserving practices like soil preparation, mulch, drip irrigation and rainwater harvesting.

Jacque,

I wrote the article about the April tour of Clark Gardens and submitted it
to 5 area newspapers. This is what I submitted. ( I never know what they
are going to print.)

Cross Timbers Chapter of NPSOT to Tour Clark Gardens

Members of the Cross Timbers Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas
will attend a private tour and luncheon at Clark Gardens on April 11th.

Clark Gardens began life in the early 1970's as the private garden of Max
and Billie Clark. Inspired by classical English garden design, they created
their own Texas version combining traditional and native plantings. Time
for gardening and water was sparse in the early years of the garden
therefore the reliance on native plants was essential. The Clarks noticed
the wealth of plants able to survive along utility easements and at
abandoned homesteads. Such plants became the backbone of their garden.
What began as a small private garden is now a 35 acre scientific and
educational facility that opened to the public in 2000. Over 50 different
gardens of native Texas and Texas adaptable plants embrace waterfalls,
lakes, ponds and winding paths.

Plant selection has been a continuous experiment in determining species that
will thrive in often adverse conditions of wind, drought, and extreme
temperatures. A goal of Clark Gardens is to display every species of plants,
both native and adapted. To this end, Clark Gardens is dedicated to
educating the public on the vast array of plants which are native to this
area and those plants that have earned the title of 'Texas Adaptable'.

This tour is only open to members of the Cross Timbers Chapter of NPSOT. The
Cross Timbers Chapter of NPSOT meets the second Thursday of the month at
Harberger Hill Community Center, 701 Narrow Street in Weatherford. Its
mission is to promote the conservation, research, and utilization of native
plants and plant habitats in Texas through education, outreach, and example.
Due to this tour the chapter will not meet the second Thursday of April.
For more information contact Eileen Porter 817-596-5567.
