Part of the BRIT Distinguished Lecture Series.  Featured speaker is Andrew Sansom, Executive Director of International Institute for Sustainable Water Resources and former director, Texas Parks and Wildlife.  Free to the public, and seating is first-come, first-served.  Parking lot opens at 6:30 pm. 

 

Garden Design with Native Plants with Andrea DeLong-Amaya

Two Saturdays, September 13 & 20, 1 to 5:30 pm

Learn basic garden design concepts, and how to apply them to your site, using the versatile palette of native plants found in Central Texas.  Topics will include: site analysis, plant selection, garden styles, and basic design principles such as composition, color, texture, form, and personalizing your garden.

 

Austin Museum Day – Sowing Fall Seeds for Spring Wildflowers

Sunday, September 14, 9 am to 5 pm

Join us for our “Seeds for Spring” extravaganza.  Talk to the Wildflower Center’s knowledgeable botanical staff about how to grow wildflowers from seeds, save 20% on all seed purchases, and attend planting demonstrations.   

 

Wildflowers and Golf at the Wildflower Golf Classic

Monday, September 15, 1 pm

See how Lost Creek Country Club is landscaping its golf course with native plants and grasses and enjoy a great afternoon of golf at the 2003 Wildflower Golf Classic.  For more information about this tournament benefiting the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center contact Greg Rives at (512) 292-4200, ext. 121.

 

Texas Plant Conservation Conference

Wednesday to Friday, September 17 to 19, 8:30 am to 5 pm

$ 45 general public/$35 professionals/$25 volunteers/$10 students (lunch not included)

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, together with the US Fish & Wildlife Service, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, and Texas Department of Transportation, will bring together private landowners, botanists, professionals, and academics working with Texas’ rare and endangered plant species from all regions of the state.  Speakers will discuss the status of the state’s rare and endangered flora.  For more information, contact Flo Oxley at (512) 292-4200, ext. 160.

Join Jay Kane of Native American Seed, to learn the secrets of how to select and plant native wildflower seed, prepare the soil, and maintain your own wildflower meadow, regardless of its size.

 

Wildlife Use Appraisal Workshop with Beyrl Armstrong

Saturday, September 27, 9 am to 5 pm

$80(m)/$90(nm) lunch and materials included

Landowners learn how to convert an Agriculture Tax Exemption for 20 acres or more into a Wildlife Use Exemption.  Includes specific examples of yearly wildlife management and habitat-improvement practices that qualify and a walk-through of the conversion approval process.

Native Ornamental Grasses Workshop:  Identification, Propagation, and Landscaping Uses with John Snowden

Grass… it’s not just for mowing anymore!  Learn all about our beautiful native grasses.  John Snowden will teach you how to identify, propagate, and use native grasses in your landscape.  Class size limited. 

 

Sunday Afternoon Gardening Talks

Fall is the best time to garden in Central Texas.  Join us for three talks about making your fall garden more interesting with native plants.  Talks are free with admission to the Wildflower Center.  Each talk lasts approximately 50 minutes.

 

Sunday, October 5, 1 pm, “Butterfly Gardening,” with Judy Walther, designer of the Butterfly Garden at the Wildflower Center.  Judy will discuss the needs of butterflies, what plants they prefer, and how you can create a place for butterflies in your garden.

 

Sunday, October 19, 1 pm,  “ Designing your Garden” with John Gleason, Landscape Architect with the City of Austin Watershed Protection Department.  John will discuss different landscaping styles, design theory, the design process, and how to choose the right plant for the right place.

 

Sunday, October 26, 1 pm,  “Plants for an Interesting Fall Garden” with Andrea DeLong-Amaya, Gardens Manager at the Wildflower Center.  Andrea will discuss the many native plants you can add to your garden to increase interest in color, texture, and form.

Saturday & Sunday, October 11 & 12, 9 am to 5 pm

Festival de las Plantas

Saturday, October 18

Free Grand Opening event at Roy G. Guerro Colorado River Park

The Austin Parks Foundation, Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, PODER, and City of Austin, invite you to the Festival de Las Plantas to be held at Colorado River Park. The park’s free grand opening festival focuses on the many ways people interact with plants.

Attendees can enjoy walks, talks, educational pavilions, live music, and food booths. Fun activities will be available for adults and children.

 

Ecological Restoration Essentials with Steve Windhager and Mark Simmons

Saturday, October 25, 9 am to 1 pm

This course will present the basic science, tools, and economics of ecological restoration.  The class will cover assessment, monitoring, seed selection, seeding techniques, woody management, and long-term management practices for Central Texas.

Gourd Basket Crafting with Frances Cushing

Thursday, November 6, 9 am to noon

$45(m)/$50(nm) (price includes all materials needed to create gourd basket with weaving)

Get Creative!  Just in time for Thanksgiving, we will clean, polish, and drill holes into precut gourds and use stitched materials such as pine needles to create a gourd vessel with stitched opening.

 

East Texas as a Unique Ecosystem: From Big D to the Big Thicket

Friday, November 7, 7 to 8:30 pm, Wildflower Center Auditorium

Part of the BRIT Distinguished Lecture Series.  Featured speaker is George Diggs, professor at Austin College and lead author, Illustrated Flora of East Texas.  Free to the public, and seating is first-come, first-served.  Parking lot opens at 6:30 pm. 

 

Propagating Native Plants with Pat McNeal

Tuesday and Thursday, November 18 & 20, 4 to 6pm

Participants will learn first hand how to propagate from seeds, cuttings, and division using materials found in most homes.
