This is a reminder that the Summer Plant Survey at the Gault Archaeological Site is this coming Saturday, August 1, from 8-10am.

Details and Directions to the site may be found at www.npsot.org.  Click on Chapters, go down to Williamson County Chapter, click on that.

Information will be listed under Meetings.

The directions listed are good.  I always look for the Red-tiled roofed house on the left.  If you are not speeding as you approach, it is easy to spot.

We will start on time as it promises to be hot that day.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to let you all know that the Grapevine is up online for your
reading enjoyment! Go to our website to download
(http://www.npsot.org/WilliamsonCounty/Newsletters/default.html). Please
remember, I take articles at all times so you don't have to wait until I am due
to published to put things in the NL - sooner is better!

Also, as you will see Kathy McCormack and I are currently carrying out a survey
trying to locate Horned Lizards. If you have seen any or any Harvester ants
nests we would love to know. So far we haven't had any luck finding any horned
lizards so we are getting rather desperate so please help us out if you can - we
would be so grateful!

Anyway, enjoy the newsletter and hopefully by the next time I write we will have
had some rain and the temperature will have dropped to something a little more
bearable! My thanks to all who sent me articles.

Christine

Hello, Friends:

I am planning out Nature Nights for Friday, September 18th, and I need your
help. The theme is "Plants and People" and I sure could use some help with folks
that would like to share knowledge and participate with activities to our
general public; I address this program with culture in mind, so here are a few
areas/Discovery Stations that I need help with:

1. Dye table matching game: using cloth samples dyed with cochineal and
other native plant dyes in a matching game.
2. What's that smell? A "fragrance" table where kids can compare the scent
of special native plants with other popular fragrances.
3. Crafting: Make a Spring seed packet and make your own paper
4. Central Texas Sampler: two tables dedicated to food made from native
plants (honey, jellies, and mesquite cornbread)
5. Early Native Americans: explore with families how native Americans used
native plants and other materials in their daily lives
6. Help out with habitat hikes and telling lore along the way

There is always room for more, so please contact myself
(sbrueggerhoff@...), or Carrie McDonald if you can help. Remember
that this is an evening family event from 6 pm to 9 pm.

And thanks a bunch, Stephen

Hello Prairie People,

I'm working steadily at restoring 59 acres north of Granger Lake, over the Williamson County line in Milam County. Just in the last week, driving out to my place, I noticed a sign has gone up on a beautiful tract overlooking the lake for sale by owner, a 96 acre piece and a 90 acre piece. They are both cultivated tracts, except for 5 acres with trees on one piece. The view from this high ground is lovely and it is only a stone's throw from the tall grass prairie restoration and seed bank next to the dam.

I spoke to the owner. This property was in his father's estate and has been farmed for years. There is electricity on both, a pond on one, a well on the other and an old house. Bell-Milam-Falls water is available.

This would be a "from scratch" restoration, starting with an empty slate but I think it would be well worth it if someone had the resources to take it on. I say again IT IS A BEAUTIFUL SETTING, rich blackland, with vast views.

My land is 49 miles from central Austin, about an hour's drive NNE. This tract is probably 45 miles from central Austin, in Williamson County. I hope someone with prairie sensibilities buys it and not a developer! Could it be you?

The asking price is 3500. an acre. I'm going to look at it tomorrow since I'll be out there anyway. You can call me if you want to know more. 512 657-2302

‘Texas Native Plant Week’ signed by the Governor

Native Grown

By Bill Ward - Native Plant Society of Texas

Published: Sunday, August 2, 2009 1:03 AM CDT

Effective Sept. 1, there will be an official Texas Native Plant Week, celebrated annually the third week in October. During the 2009 Texas legislative session, Representative Donna Taylor of Austin authored a bill entitled “An Act relating to a recognition week to celebrate Texas native plants” (CSHB 1739).

She introduced the bill at the urging of Faye Tessnow of the Highland Lake chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

The bill was sponsored in the Senate by Texas’ youngest senator, Glenn Hegar of Katy. It passed unanimously in both houses. Governor Rick Perry signed the bill into law on June 16.

Faye Tessnow convinced Representative Taylor to introduce this legislation because she felt the official state recognition could serve to emphasize the role of native plants in conservation efforts, support efforts to teach school children about native plants and make the public aware that native-plant species are threatened by loss of habitat and invasion of exotic species.

The weeklong focus on native plants will be new this fall, but Texas has had a Wildflower Day since April 26, 1980. This first day was proclaimed by a gubernatorial edict of Governor Bill Clements in conjunction with the first annual Wildflower Day conference at Texas Women’s University in Denton. This symposium, in effect, was the first meeting of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

Thanks to the efforts of Carroll Abbott of Kerrville, by the time the second Wildflower Day at TWU came around in April 1981, there was an official Texas Wildflower Day and an official beginning of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

Carroll Abbott worked for newspapers in Houston and Kerrville during the 1940s and 1950s and was part of a group that operated the Comfort News in the early 1960s.

During the 1950s and 1960s, he was a political consultant and public relations person for the State Democratic Party.

All the time he traveled for the Democratic Party, he also observed, collected and raised wildflowers. In 1970, he quit political consulting to devote the rest of his life to wildflowers.

Abbott moved to Kerrville and started Green Horizons, a seed company and nursery. He began publishing the “Texas Wildflower Newsletter” in the fall of 1976.

Abbott used this publication to educate the public about native plants and to advocate for a Native Plant Society of Texas. In the Winter 1980 issue, he also made a plea to have the fourth Saturday in April officially recognized as Wildflower Day in Texas.

He wrote, “To aid the movement, Abbott has announced plans to register with the Secretary of State as a professional wildflower lobbyist, representing all of the 5,500 different species of plants native to Texas.”

He gathered 3,000 expressions of support from individuals and clubs.

Representative Earnestine Glossbrenner of Alice was the first legislator to show an interest in the Wildflower Day idea. Carroll Abbott, therefore, got her to handle the bill for declaring a Wildflower Day in Texas.

On April 6, 1981, the bill easily passed the House vote and was sent to the Senate and eventually to the Governor for his signature.

The fourth Saturday of April for Wildflower Day in Texas coincided with the Wildflower Day observances at TWU in the 1980s.

The third week in October for Texas Native Plant Week will coincide with the time of the annual Symposium of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

* A cactus or succulent plant or cutting. The more unique the better. We have plenty of spineless pear cactus.
* Wildflower seeds. So far we have bluebonnet, tall red cypress and red poppy.
* Rocks with holes that can support a growing plant and a small plant for the rock

Some of you may be interested in new TV special THE BOTANY OF DESIRE which
brings Michael Pollan's best-selling book of the same name to television,
showing how human desires are an essential, intricate part of natural history.
The program explores the natural history of four plants -- the apple, the tulip,
marijuana and the potato -- and the corresponding human desires -- sweetness,
beauty, intoxication and controlling nature -- that link their destinies to our
own.

This two hour program can be seen tonight on KLRU-PBS at 7:00pm and again Monday
morning at 1:00 am.

The deadline for "Grapevine" Newsletter articles/photos/Misc. is, shall we say, NOW!!!

If you have promised Christine anything for the Newsletter, please send in TODAY!

Those of you who attended the Annual Symposium in Wichita Falls need to send a short summary of the "Official" Activities you participated in, talks, workshops, field trips, etc.

We need to know what transpired at the Board meeting, Chapter Leader Meeting, etc.  This is the only way that those of us at the chapter level have of keeping up with what is going on at the state.

FMI, contact Christine Powell at xtinepowell@....
