Apprentice Farmer in Northern New York

Essex Farm is a 500 acre year-round CSA in Essex, NY.
We produce a whole diet for 75 members, including
grass-fed beef, pastured pork, pastured chickens,
dairy, eggs, vegetables, maple syrup, small grains and
flours, and some fruit. Most of the field work is done
with draft horses.

The team currently consists of four full-time and
three part-time farmers. We are adding one or two
full-time positions beginning in September ’08. The
ideal candidate is an athletic, motivated, energetic,
responsible person who thrives on brutal physical work
and wants to learn how to be a farmer. Teamwork,
resilience, intelligence, sense of humor and positive
attitude are crucial. Farm or related skills are
helpful but not necessary. Bonus points for playing
electric bass. We offer room and board plus $9000 a
year. After a trial period we ask for at least a
one-year commitment.

Responsibilities vary with the season. Hours are
always long. Once some skills are acquired, you will
take on your own area of management, e.g., greenhouse,
pastures, dairy, butcher shop, vegetable production,
distribution, etc.
