Women’s input sought to improve farming, gardening tools
Market growers Ann Adams & Liz Brensinger are seeking the input of women farmers
and gardeners interested in tools designed specifically for them. “Women
deserve tools that work with them, not against them,” note Ann and Liz, citing
differences between women’s and men’s bodies that make using men’s tools
less comfortable, less efficient and less safe for women. Ann and Liz have
started Green Heron Tools, LLC, to provide high-quality garden and farm tools
for women, and have posted a 12-question survey at
http://www.farmtoolsforwomen.com/Survey.html so women can provide input on what
they most want and need. For more information, please visit

(Expanded version)
Are you a woman who’s passionate about farming or gardening? If so, Green
Heron Tools wants to hear from you!
Despite the growing number of women farmers and gardeners, almost all tools and
equipment are designed for men. Using tools produced for men puts women at
increased risk of injuries and reduces comfort and efficiency, note organic
market growers Liz Brensinger and Ann Adams, who’ve started Green Heron Tools,
LLC, to provide high-quality garden and farm tools for women.
Ann and Liz are inviting women gardeners, farmers and market growers to share
their perspectives regarding the tools they like, want and need by filling out a
12-question survey at
http://www.farmtoolsforwomen.com/Survey.html The survey
will be on line at least until June.
Green Heron Tools will use the survey results to prioritize the design of new
tools and equipment and to ensure that women’s preferences are incorporated
into the designs. Ann and Liz also want to hear about any existing tools that
women like, so that they can have additional gardeners and farmers test the
tools and then, depending on the results, offer the tools on their website,
www.farmtoolsforwomen.com.
Researchers say women generally have 40-75% less upper-body strength than men
and 5-30% less lower-body strength.. Women also have smaller hands, which means
smaller grips, and are generally shorter than men. “Women deserve tools that
work with them, not against them,” say Ann and Liz, whose own 11+ years as
market growers have attuned them to the need for equipment better suited to
women.
