THE FIVE SUNS (or SIX SUNS) The term "World" as used in this context is interchangeable with the word "Sun" (and sometimes "Age"). Whether there is to be a total of Five or Six Suns (Worlds) is primarily dependent upon which tradition one follows. There is no consensus. For those not familiar with the Mayan Calendar, this is not the same as the use of the words "Day" or "Night" or Heaven and Underworld.. . those refer to a different aspect of their sacred Tzolk'in Calendar. For some, th use of "Worlds" or "Suns" has to do with specific segmented timeframes within the Long Count Calendar or "Great Cycle" (which Carl Johan Calleman calls the "National Underworld" or Cycle) beginning approx. 3115 B.C.E. (approx. 5,125 years ago) which the Nahua peoples typically mark as the BEGINNING of their civilization and the introduction of Maize (corn). For others, the measure of each Sun has to due with Creation going back to the beginning of the Earth, which they align to various Eras in Earth's history including the age of Dinosaurs, the Ice Age, etc. The concept known generally as the Suns describes the world-view held by the Aztec, Maya and other Nahua peoples (which includes the Toltec, Olmec, etc.), in which the present world was preceded by four other cycles of creation and destruction. It is primarily derived from the mythological, cosmological and eschatological beliefs and traditions of earlier cultures from central Mexico and the Mesoamerican region in general. The Late Postclassic Aztec society inherited many traditions concerning Mesoamerican creation accounts, while however modifying some aspects and supplying novel interpretations of their own. In the particular versions of eschatology and creation myths which were known to the Aztec and other Nahua peoples of the Late Postclassic era, the central tenet was that there had been four worlds, or "Suns", previous to the present universe. These earlier worlds and their inhabitants had been created, then destroyed by the catastrophic action of leading deity figures. The present world is the fifth sun, and the Aztec saw themselves as "the People of the Sun," whose divine duty is to wage cosmic war in order to provide the sun with his tlaxcaltiliztli ("nourishment" ). Without it, the sun would disappear from the heavens. Thus the welfare and the very survival of the universe depends upon the offerings of blood and hearts to the sun, a notion that the Aztec extended to many of the deities of their pantheon. There were five previous Eras, known as “Suns”, before our current Age, and each is ruled by a Solar Lady or Lord. All previous Suns ended in cataclysm. The FIRST SUN, Nahui Ocelotl (“Jaguar Sun”), was ruled by Tezcatlipoca, god of the North, cold and darkness who often disguised himself as a Jaguar. This first Sun ended in a bloodbath of wild beasts. The SECOND SUN, Nahui Ehécatl (“Wind Sun”) was ruled by Quetzalcóatl, the god of the West, light and truth. This second Sun was destroyed in a hurricane which brought forth by Tláloc. The THIRD SUN, Nahui Quiahuitl (“Fire-Rain Sun”) was ruled by Tláloc, the god of South and fire. The third Sun was destroyed by Tláloc in a firestorm. The FOURTH SUN, Nahui Atl (“Water Sun”) was ruled by Chalchihuitlicue, the goddess of the East and water, and Chalchihuitlicue destroyed it with a great deluge. The current FIFTH SUN, Nahui Ollin (“Earthquake Sun”) which is ruled by Xiuhtecuhtli, the god of fire and earthquakes. The role of the Fifth Sun was to cause “movement” (earthquakes) to bring cleansing to prepare for the final sun. The SIXTH SUN, Nahui Xochitl (“Flower Sun”), is ruled by Xochiquetzal, the goddess of Flowers which brings Global Enlightenment, and the end of all cycles. It is to END in 2012. In Maya tradition the four Bacabs (Aztec: Tlálocs) are Kan Tzicnal or Cantzicnal (North, the 1st Age of One Cheun), Hozanek (South, the Age of Cuauc), Zac Cimi or Saccimi (West, the Age of Ix), and Hobnil (East, the 4th Age of One Kan). Some versions of the tale say we are currently "in" the Fourth Sun, while others say were are "in" the Fifth, and even the Sixth Sun. As I said, it all depends on the tradition you follow. The Mayan Calendar does not mention a SEVENTH SUN. Perhaps the most popular tradition, in brief: FIRST SUN (Jaguar Sun) – Ruled by Tezcatlipoca (North) – First humans were giants made from mud and were slaughtered by wild beasts. SECOND SUN (Wind Sun) – Ruled by Quetzalcóatl (West) – Second humans were made from wood (manikins), but had no souls. This world was destroyed by freezing winds. Surviving humans became butterflies, dogs & turkeys. THIRD SUN (Fire Sun) – Ruled by Tláloc (South) – Third humans were made from maize. This world was destroyed by a firestorm. Surviving humans became monkeys. FOURTH SUN (Water Sun) – Ruled by Chalchihuitlicue (East) – This world was destroyed by a great flood. Tata & Nena survived, being warned by Tezcatlipoca, and were kept safe either in a wooden boat or the hollow of central "Tree of Life", all others became fish. FIFTH SUN (Earth Sun) – Ruled by Xiuhtecuhtli (Center) – the Current world is to be destroyed by earthquakes. SIXTH SUN (Flower Sun) – Xochiquetzal (Ascension) "The connection between a shift in consciousness and a shift in civilization was envisaged by Native American cultures, including the Maya, Cherokee, Tayta, Xingue, Hopi, Inca, Seneca, Inuit, and Mapuche. They indicate that we are presently living under the Fifth Sun of consciousness and are on the verge of entering the Sixth Sun.
