Subject: Trap 19 and Server Not responding
triumphgt6
Offline Offline

FYI, I get the Trap 19 using MusicMatch, the server is running and
often the track still plays.

Also, entertainingly (!), I have found the MP101 throws a Server Not
Responding error whenever I play a track with an extended character
set name, e.g. O Morro Não Tem Vez (I like latin jazz - is that a
crime?).

Editing the tag to remove these makes the track play fine. Again,
this is with MusicMatch as the server. In fact Musicmatch Jukebox
throws an error when one of these tracks is accessed and shuts down
the PC client, though the server continues to run - weird.

I don't know if that's a problem with MusicMatch or the MP101 since
the Netgear server has stopped working completely (not a great loss).

Finally I find that the MP101 loses its presets at the drop of a hat -
tedious since I'm working through my whole misuc collection at the
moment to find out which songs throw a "Unable to play song" error so
that I can re-encode them. Interestingly this error seems to happen
most often to the first song in the directory. Re-encoding fixes it
(I use dbPowerAmp - highly recommended, http://www.dbpoweramp.com/).

Let's keep sharing our experiences here - then we can send those nice
people at Netgear a list of fixes...

I agree wholeheartedly, though I stuck with the Netgear server until
Twonky supports WMA files :(

The rumours are that the update will be shipped early May, so I
expect it'll be here soon...I'll let you know! :)

That very well could be...I've abandoned the Netgear server due to
the skipping..that's just totally unacceptable and poor coding. I
have yet to hear a skip using Twonky on my EAC/Lame --APS tracks.
I'll need assurance from fellow members when and if Netgear ever

Yep, I get that happen as well. Sometimes, after it has dropped the
server it takes ages to reconnect to the server, other times it's
almost instantaneous.

I just wanted to see if anybody else has this problem as it seems
very much like a bug to me.

I boot up the host PC, login to XP and wait for the server software
to start. Then I move downstairs and power up the MP101 itself.
The unit starts up fine and displays the main menu. I "Browse
Music" and select the Artist menu, the unit then complains that it's
lost the wireless network and reboots, associates and asks me to
select the server.

It's solid as a rock after that and very responsive (except for the
songs that stop that is).

This only happens after rebooting the PC that the server software
resides on. I have a USR8054 router, and that's powered on
constantly.

Anyone else suffer this way. It's no biggie, but it is quite
annoying when it takes about a minute and a half to get the unit to
a state where it's actually doing it's job (ie playing music)...

Let's hope the next firmware release does the trick :)

Cheers,
B.

Follow-up that the stream stopped after about an hour..MP had the
next tune showing, all I had to do was press select to continue
streaming. I can live with that, I s'pose. Any workarounds for
that,too?

Just wanted to report a success on this issue. I cannot get the
winamp plug-in version to connect to the MP..MP simply sees, but
cannot connect to the winamp plug-in..tries for about thirty
seconds, then says cannot connect, restart server..upon which I find
Winamp has crashed. I decided to look for workarounds, and think
I've found one. I start Winamp, open a url(smoothjazz.com in this
instance),open playlist->save as->'smoothjazz.m3u' in my EAC Music
folder where Standalone Twonky resides, verify it's there(m3u),close
Winamp, start the Standalone Twonky server and nav to the
new 'smoothjazz.m3u' playlist, and whallah.
I'm totally new to streaming, so I don't know if this 'link' is
persistent, or how long it lasts, but I was surprised to even get it
to work sans Winamp/Shoutcast..I thought those were essentials for
it to work. I hope I'm right, and this is a true workaround..time
will tell. G'Luck!

This is why I'm anxious for someone to open her up and begin the
component assessments..with that info, we'll know what we can and
cannot do with this hardware. The UPnP is certainly a large door, so
hopefully there's no as-of-yet undiscovered firmware/costly
proprietary development environment necessary to accomplish our
goals. In time, I see a few geeks coming up with anything we want
gui-wise. It's what we eventually did at my other forum:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/archosjukebox6000/
The JB was just generic enough, and the gui/OS just flaky enough to
spur RockBox develpoment:
http://rockbox.haxx.se/
and over time the replacement OS now even has talking menus for the
blind! among other jukebox firsts. Still, it all started with a
thorough component assessment for hack potential. Let's get bizzy! ;)

I'm considering using itunes to use the new mp4 format which offers
better sound quality apparently. Anyone managed to get an mp4 file
to play on the mp101 using twonkyvision or the Netgear Server.

Anyone have an idea how to start developing software for the mp101
so we can get something that's stable and works. It can't be that
difficult right?

I've tried using the open source Slimserver software which
apparently supports upnp. It'd be good to get that working with the
mp101 because it looks a lot better, has been around longer and
people fix the problems rather than having to wait for a company
with different priorities.

I got a really unhelpful message from Netgear the other day along
the lines of re-install the software and re-boot. Do Microsoft have
shares in Netgear perchance ;)

cheers,

Dave

I jut did a port scan of my MP101, no ports open. Doesn't surprise me
too much either, since it's a client and not a server.

Tho maybe a web interface would be a good idea for the future for
managing playlists, for example.

Any other ideas or wishes for a web interface? You never know,
Netgear might be reading this forum at some point in the future.

There has been some talk elsewhere and in Netgear's pre-launch blurb
of the MP101 having a browser interface.

Has anyone discovered any way of seeing the MP101 on the network and
of interfacing with it remotely. So far the best I can do is get it
to respond to Pings.

I have a problem with one of 2 wireless networked PCs, the MP101
tries to connect to the Twonky server, but times out and tells me to
restart the server, then it starts looking for servers on the network
again. No idea why, it connects to the other PC fine, and that one's
further away. Both XP Pro and newish PCs.

BTW, great idea to create a Yahoo! Group for the MP101. I've only
found a few other sites with info, 2 of them are blogs, which are a
pain to navigate. Maybe we should announce this group at the other
site (expansys, you already did at dslreports, that's why i'm here).

You need the following :

TwonkyVision Winamp Plugin v1.04
http://www.twonkyvision.com/UPnP/WinampMediaServerPlugin-1-0-4.zip

SHOUTcast WIN32 Console/GUI server v1.9.4
http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/sc1-9-4/shoutcast-1-9-4-windows.exe

SHOUTcast DSP Plug-In for Winamp 2.x
http://www.shoutcast.com/downloads/shoutcast-dsp-1-8-2b-windows.exe

Tara's Real Audio Input Plugin v1.0.3b for Winamp
http://www.musiclivesonline.com/software/downloads/Tara_v1.0.3b.exe

RealPlayer, v8 or higher.

Winamp v2.9x or v5.x, AKAIK the plugins don't work with Winamp 3.x.

Install all the software and start "sc_serv.exe" from the SHOUTcast
installation folder. If you see an error message like the one below
you need to change the portbase in "sc_serv.ini" to another port, try
incrementing the number to 8001 etc. until you get the server
running. It's a good idea to start the server from a DOS windows so
you can see any error messages, if you just start the exe from the
windows explorer and the port is blocked, the window will close
automatically, you won't be able to see the error messages.

[main] error opening client socket! FATAL ERROR! Some other
process is using this port!

When you've got the SHOUTcast server running, start Winamp.

Go to Preferences, DSP/Effect, select or double-click SHOUTcast
Source for Winamp v1.8.0 to bring up the SHOUTcast Source window.
Go to Output, check Connect At Startup, change the port if you had
problems with the default port 8000, go to Yellowpages, deselect Make
this server public (to stop the plugin trying to register itself with
SHOUTcast's directory), go to Encoder, select required Encoder
Bitrate Settings (I chose 96kbps, 44.1kHz, Stereo). Close Winamp
Preferences, the SHOUTcast Source window should still be visible.

Create a new playlist in Winamp with your chosen name, e.g. SHOUTcast
Local Relay, then choose play a URL from the file menu and enter
http://localhost:8000 (adjust the port number again if the SHOUTcast
server isn't running on the default port 8000). Winamp will try to
connect to this "stream", you'll see an error message that it could
not connect. Ignore this. Right click on this entry in the playlist
editor and choose send to the playlist you created before.

The entry in your playlist will be called http://localhost:8000, you
can change this by opening the corresponding m3u file in
Winamp\Plugins\ml (assuming Winamp 5.x) in a text editor and changing
the text after #EXTINF:-1, to your prefered more meaningful name.
This will show up later on the MP101.

All that remains is to connect to a RealAudio stream, e.g. BBC Radio 7

rtsp://rmlivev8.bbc.net.uk/farm/*/ev7/live24/bbc7/live/bbc7_dsat_g2.ra

Now connect your MP101 to the TwonkyVision Media Server and browse
the playlist and play your RealAudio stream in MP3.

Hope this helps.

Quickie ?..
Do I d/l and run shoutcast as a plugin to Winamp, AND the twonky
plugin at the same time? Perhaps we need a text 'How-To' to set this
up for newbs like me.
I got the MP for my own collection (~50gigs of -APS), but streaming
netaudio would also be sweet. I finally just moved to where DSL is
available, and am just now seeing 'real' broadband, and how useful
it is (SBC Expert package). On my ole Direcway connection, I'd be
fapped and shut down within an hour, so I never botheres streaming
anything. :P

Thanks Henry! I was gonna do that, but'cha beat me to it! :)
Anything MP101-related should be uploaded, for posterity..some of
these smallish companies(and even the larger ones) tend to remove
older copies of OS/firmwares/updates,etc...and I like to have them
stored in the group's Files section.

Good idea to create this group. Hope you don't mind me uploading the
twonkyVision files into the file-departement. I thought it would be
nice to find something in there.
Unfortunately the program only does work with my new XP computer. The
old Win98 box only works with the humble netgear soft. I was so glad
to find a new job for the old one. Now I can only use it with my mp3s.

I too bought the MP101 to send internet radio all over the house. But
nevertheless it's just the beginning. Hope there is more to come.
Greetings from Hamburg (Germany)
Henry

Most of my tracks are ripped to non-DRM VBR WMA files, which are all
encoded using WMP9, and still I get stops and skips...so I think the
problem is solely with the Digital 5 software and not so much to do
with encoding probs.

An upgrade to a USR 8054 router from an ad-hoc network improved the
skipping a bit due to an increase in signal strength, but still get
the stops.

The Twonky server works great for me except for a couple of points:

a) No WMA support.
b) Sorts by Artist then track only, not Artist, Album, Track like the
D5 software.

Once this is sorted then I'm sure I'll switch, but then again I'm not
really interested in streaming internet radio.

i only had skipping problems with older mp3s i dl'ed some time ago,
all my own rips with eac/lame-aps work fine. i'm using wep128 and an
intel wireless gateway with intel 2011b pci adapter and belkin
f5d6001 v2.

the twonky server is a bit more problematic, the client drops the
connection regularly when playing mp3s, but i use the twonky server
only for streaming mp3 radio from the internet and especially for
streaming realaudio streams to a local shoutcast server, the winamp
shoutcast dsp transcodes the realaudio to mp3 on the fly.

my main reason for buying the mp101 was for streaming internet radio,
so i was obviously disappointed that rhapsody was the only solution
at product launch, but i expect netgear will offer support for other
formats later. i wasn't prepared to spend more money on a unit that
_maybe_ in the future might be able to stream realaudio (e.g. philips
streamium), and i definitely won't pay to subscribe to stream radio
from the internet. rhapsody isn't even live radio, more a jukebox,
you stop play and resume and get a different song.

all in all, an absolute bargain compared with competing products, i'm
sure netgear will sort out the problems that admittedly most new
products suffer from.

I just found and tried TwonkyVision's server,
http://www.twonkyvision.de/UPnP/index.html
and it has relieved me of the dropout/skip problem I had on quite a
few tracks with the D5 server. Anyone else get this problem and find
workarounds/solutions?

Howdy all! Yea..I know yer groaning..'Not Another Damned Yahoo
Group!!'..but I've found it to be the best, easiest alternative to
running phpbb and server, etc. and most folks already have a Yahoo
account, etc. And the email response is a big salespoint for me, so
just bite the biggie and join us! I started this group after doing a
brief googsearch, and finding quite a bit of info on the mp101
scattered among several sites..and thought compiling/consolidating
info into a group was the better alternative. As we progress, I hope
to build a useful Files/Links/Database/FAQ section like my other
groups have..these are indispensible for users needed answers..help
out wherever you can, share the love(and occasional rant) when you
have the time. Welcome again!
