I am interested in any and all (I really need 4). How much are you
each looking to get for them. My daughters school is setting up a
couple of "college-like" lounges (4) and I have offered my services to
network each area. While alot of people have issues with them I find
the work great on a wired network. They are perfect for the application
that they will be used in (i.e. a locked room, each with a dedicated
computer - all P3's - as music servers - that only staff can access).
The timing is great because this is an over the summer project.

Yea, I was thinking about putting it on ebay. I just hate dealing with
all the hassle of posting it, if nobody is interested/knows about the 101.
If somebody on here is interested, I can either sell it directly, or
put it on ebay with a link to this yahoo group, so MP101 fans can
snatch it off. (who are already familiar with it.)

Hi Guys,
I'm thinking about selling my MP101. Anybody interested?
I have the unit (with screen protector still attached - never took it off)
The remote
The original box with all that came with it
Ever since I got an ipod I don't use the Mp anymore. It's just
collecting dust (not really, it's behind glass in the TV cabinet :p )
and I haven't been using it. Is there someone on here who would enjoy
it more than me? Shoot me an email.

Hi Bob,
Don't be offended by this question: have you performed a
shutdown/reboot after uninstalling the old version?
I had problems with the NG server not working on various PC's in my
house, and now exclusively use Twonky as a server with very good
results. I realize that's probably not the answer you were looking
for, either, but it's a possible solution to your problem. The ONLY
thing that NG server is absolutely required for (that I've noticed) is
to upgrade MP101 firmware - but you've indicated that you've already
done this, and I think it's safe to assume that there won't be any
newer MP101 firmware released anytime in the future... :-)
Good luck!

A similar issue seems to have been discussed in the Netgear forums (http://forum1.netgear.com/showthread.php?p=22747) with not much luck other than to uninstall and reinstall the Netgear Media Server software. You could try doing a search for "Netgear" or "Media Server" files/folders in your computer and remove them (after making sure that they are remnants of the Netgear Media Server software). A reboot of the machine might also prove to be useful (but you probably already did that).
You could also look at some third party uninstallers/cleaners like the Revo Uninstaller (http://www.revouninstaller.com/) and see if they can remove traces of the old software from your computer. Then you can try your luck with performing a fresh install of the latest Netgear Media Server software (version 3.3.36) downloaded from the Netgear MP101 support page (http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/mp101.asp).
Disclaimers: I haven't used the Netgear Media Server software myself even though I own a couple of functioning MP101s. And I also have not used the Revo Uninstaller software but just read some decent reviews about it elsewhere.
Hi. I have had my MP-101 for a few years and it has worked fine.
Server software is installed on a Windows Media Center computer and it
is on a wired network. Software is up to date as is the firmware.
Somehow the server software seems to have gotten corrupted and all of
a sudden it started asking for a CD Key.I have my original CD, but
there is no CD Key. I tried to uninstall the server software, but I
received an error saying it could not find the uninstall log. So I
deleted the folder and ran a registry cleaner software hoping to rid
all traces of the old install. Now when I try to reinstall the server
software, I get a message about a newer version already installed and
I can't reinstall it. any idea what I can do?

Pandora is apparently available on some devices that appear to be

way to make it work with the MP101 (or the Linksys WMLS11B, for that

I have a similar problem when I use my my wireless MP101s, but when I
use the ones that are wired it works flawlessly. (I'm actually in the
midst of pulling cable to make them all wired.)

Hi Group-
So here are my 2 cents: My setup is wireless using a netgear router
and twonkymedia server. The thing that really helped with booting was
setting the MP101 up with a static address and reserving the same on the
router. It boots successfully almost every time now.
I had been using an external IDE disk on a USB2.0 interface and often
the MP101 would quit mid-song and time out before moving on to the next
track. This problem was largely eliminated by moving my song collection
to an internal SATA drive. This really cut down on the time-outs. They
still happen if the computer becomes too busy with some task that uses a
lot of I/O but this does not happen very frequently.
The conclusion I have is that the MP-101 (or maybe the twonkymedia
server) is sensitive to latency on the computer so a fast disk, plenty
of memory and not too many large processes is essential to having the
mp101 run smoothly.
Regards,
Steve
Have to agree that the MP101 is pretty good at what it does.
I run with 1.4.7 firmware and a hard wired power switch
added to the front panel. Other than that, I get good performance with JRiver server
software. Only problem I get is that I often need two power cycles to get a
good connection. After that I can run as long as I like with no issues.
And I have always run wireless (hidden SSID but no WEP).
If I could find another music player with a decent screen
for £100 or below, I might be tempted to upgrade.
I might add that I've had my MP101 for a few years, now and have been
reasonably happy with it--once I survived the growing pains/learning
curve. Running on Twonky Music server has been pretty trouble free,
and, of course, I run wired. I am thinking of replacing it with a
Sony Playstation 3 someday and moving it into a bedroom close to the
wireless router, so you may see me cursing once again, but so far, so
good.

HI all just thought I'd share my experience of the Philips SLA5520
that I sold last week (just 2 weeks old). I bought it out of idle
curiosity in the sales, I thought it'd be nice to see how wifi music
streaming is supposed to work compared to the MP101. The wifi side
works flawlesly and the Philips both boots quickly and connects
quickly to the network. Thats all it has over the MP101. The
display is small and lacks contrast so I struggled to read it from 6
feet away, while I can read the MP101 from 15 feet away, the sound
quality I don't think is as good as the MP101 and it has none of the
handy dedicated remote buttons for artist, genre, track search etc.
The final nail in the coffin for me was that once you had navigated
the menus to the correct search e.g. artist and want to type the first
letter of the artist's name, you press the letter key and it gives you
a number on the first press and the letter you wanted on the second
press, as you can imagine, when you can't really read the display
unless you walk up to the thing, this is annoying.
Other features it lacks are; any means of adjusting brightness or
contrast on the display and a screen saver mode to switch the display off.
Come back MP101 all is forgiven as long as I use it wired that is.
Cheers

MP101 does not work with .wma files. Have to convert to 192
(perhaps 320) fixed. You might want to consider http://www.tversity.com/home .

Anyway to get the MP101 to work with Media
Player 11?
I get a small window on restart that states "DB files missing. Server
started with fresh DB" and the server won't start. the only fix is to
reinstall but of course after a restart it happens again.
I
have 6 mp101s connected wireless and get virtually continuous access. It took a
while but has been in place for a number of years. In use Netgear WG302 (3) and
WG102 (1) access points with 10dbi antenna (1 each access point) and 1 Hawking
HSB2 signal booster per access point. My house is in a very bad wireless signal
location (serious cell phone and VoIP interference). The mp101s are spread throughout
my 2 story home.
Use
of the access points (+ switch) (or a bridge in one case) allows making the
mp101 think it is wired. I have to do this to use 11g as required to use 108Mbs
mode for the access points for in-house network. I use free TVersity (http://tversity.com/home)
.
The
mp101 can be pseudo-wired (e.g., with a bridge) and still let you have a wireless
network.

Here's my latest take on the MP-101 and
wireless routers. I
am a long-time user and occasional contributor to this group. I have
been running a network with 2 ancient PCs, the MP-101, and a Linksys
WRT54g coming off a cable modem. Signal drops and reconnects are the
norm on both PCs. The MP-101 has lived for years in my garage about
75 ft away from the router, and always had good days, bad days and
useless days. I performed the antenna mods that were detailed on
this board and went so far as to add a second antenna cribbed from a
dead MP-101 (another sad story) and high gain antennas on the
router. I've never had stellar router performance from three
different units of 3 brands, even though I live in a rural area with
no other networks nearby.
Last week I found another old PC curbside, picked it up and
found it fully functional. The ignorant owner even left a 20gig
harddrive intact with all his business files on it! I cleaned it up,
stuck a wireless-g card in it and put it in the attic of the garage
and dropped an ethernet cable down to the MP-101. I now have the
best performance ever from the MP-101 running wired. It still drops
out occasionally, but nearly always reconnects on its own, and plays
for hours at a time. As a bonus, I have internet in my workshop for
the first time, all for an additional cost of under $50. BTW, all 3
PCs are older win98 machines, one of which was upgraded to XP a few
years back.
To sum up, I would whole heartedly agree that wireles routers
suck, but the MP-101 is MUCH happier running wired, even with the
Netgear server software.

Actually, I checked the link for LDAAP and no where on that page does it say it will function as UPnP music server. This is the communication standard used by the MP101, so the music server you chose must be UPnP compliant or it won't work with the MP101.
Check your firewall and AV settings to make sure they aren't restricting your server software. You could try a different UPnP server as well. You could also do a test to make sure your router isn't the problem - try a crossover cable between your laptop and MP101, make sure to set static IP addresses on both. I haven't used a Mac in close to 20 years, so I'm afraid I'm not much help with your specific platform.

I've had my MP101 in and out of the packing box a few times over the years - I'd get inspired to try it, and then be only disappointed at how it wouldn't connect, couldn't keep a connection, stutter during playback, etc. I usually get inspired to give it another try as Christmas approaches, with the thought of having the MP101 run a holiday-appropriate playlist while entertaining family and friends. This past year I made a lot of positive progress and so thought I would share my observations with the group:
1) the wireless capability of the MP101 seems to be less than stellar. OK, so I base this upon a non-scientific sample size of two - a good friend of mine bought his MP101 the same time I did. But they both seem to have a real problem holding a wireless connection. This, in turn, seems to be related to signal path from wireless AP to MP101.
{Full disclosure here: I'm an RF engineer and so when I find on the internet that some folks have added a 100pF (cough...cough) leaded ceramic disc capacitor smack across the coax termination and it seems to work better, this tells me that perhaps the stock MP101 antenna matching could be improved. One day, when I'm feeling inspired, I'll drag my MP101 into the lab at work and hook it up to the network analyzer and see what I can see...}
2) I notice that some routers only tolerate, and some out and out reject, the MP101. For example, my ancient Linksys BEFSR41 (wired-only, Cable/DSL Router + 4 port switch) only tolerates the MP101: it will allow a (wired) connection, but seems to be a bit "flakey" at times when it comes to reconnect after an MP101 power-on. My somewhat-less-ancient Linksys BEFW11 (wired/wireless, Cable/DSL Router + 4 port switch) would work fairly well with a wireless connection to the MP101, but would refuse any sort of wired connection to the MP101 at all (either Fixed IP or DHCP) - the MP101 would endlessly cycle through restarts up to the point of attempting to connect to the wired network.
3) I limped along with the BEFW11 wireless connection the MP101, accepting the fact of life that the MP101 "would have good days, and bad days". A need for better connectivity for my laptop when doing work-from-home via VPN, however, caused me to want to upgrade my home wireless infrastructure from 802.11b to 802.11g. This, in turn, made me really want to get the MP101 on a wired connection, as if I left the MP101 on the wireless, then my entire wireless network would be stuck at 802.11b speed.
4) Last November I bought a Linksys WRT54GL router - despite having not such good luck with the MP101 cooperating with my previous Linksys routers, in all other respects they have been fantastic routers. Fortunately - the WRT54GL seems to be quite compatible with the MP101! Wired connection is working flawlessly; wireless works as well as it did with the BEFW11 - drops connections occasionally.
So, the point of this rambling: check your other equipment, also, if you're having problems with the MP101!
For the record: my server is XP SP2 box running Twonky Media 4.4.3.1 on a wired connection to a WRT54GL router via a 100bT hub. My MP101 client firmware Version 1.3.7 on a wired connection directly to WRT54GL router firmware version v4.30.11. I've successfully run Netgear Media Server 3.3.36 also (but I prefer Twonky).
I've since relegated the BEFSR41 to "switch duty" (no DSL modem attached, no DHCP server, so looks like a switch) elsewhere on my network, and the BEFW11 is now collecting dust on the same shelf where the MP101 was once parked!
Hope this is helpful to someone else in the group!
Don't know much about Mac's anymore, but you MP101 should work with it so long as you have a UPnP compatible music server running on it. I think iTunes will work if I'm not mistaken.
