I publish a newsletter for Louisiana lawyers and have over five years
of past issues that I would like to put on a CD and sell.

The newsletters are in WordPerfect format and there are about 40
files
(one for each issue) that total about 10 mb that I want to include in
the CD.

I am looking for a search engine that non-techie lawyers can use to
search the past issues. I will probably be selling the CD compilation
for between $99 and $135, so the engine can not be too expensive. I
have looked at Acrobat, but the interface is not great if I want to
search over 40 files.

Has anyone had any experience (good or bad) with document search
engines for CDs? Does anyone have any recommendation, comments, or
suggestions?

will the copernic desktop search or the google desktop search work in
a cd if you index before you write the disk? I have no idea, but I
like the copernic desktop search of the harddrives I use at the
office.

Explain what you are trying to accomplish. I would look at ISYS, see
ISYS-search.com. It is the search engine which powers Worlddox. They also have
a free time limited demo.

Since the Google Index lives on each individual
machine, this solution wouldn't work once the CD was
sold to a new owner.

If the buyers had a desktop search tool like Google,
Copernic or X1 installed they could easily find files
on the CD...and their hard drive, etc...but they'd
have to have it installed.

Have you seen the search interface for the newest
version of Acrobat. I think it's better than the
previous versions. (This is based on my recollection
of a demo I saw earlier this year.)

I used version 4 to create a similar searchable index
of 100+ newsletters a few years back. I agree that
the interface was in-elegant, but it got the job done.

At that time I didn't see another cost-effective
search on CD solution. The best I saw at that time
was dtsearch which is cost prohibitive for small-run
CD projects.

Has anyone done a similar indexing/search project with
Acrobat 7?

I don't have a specific product to recommend, but what occurs to me is
that it sounds like maybe you need an index, not a search engine.

The advantage to an index is that you don't need any special software
on the CD - it could be done in Acrobat/PDF or HTML or some similar
format. Also, then you don't need to worry about Windows vs Mac vs
Linux and the various flavors of each OS and whether or not they can
use whatever program you include. I am also concerned that a search
engine that didn't have a prebuilt index might run unreasonably slowly
when reading an entire CD's worth of data searching for the user's
query, since many CD/DVD drives are not fast compared to hard disks or
RAM.

The downside is that users can't necessarily put together ad hoc
queries like "2003 and 'eminent domain' and 'judge smith'" or whatever
- but I don't know if that's something that's very likely given your
users and your content.

Basic information about Network-Lawyers aka netLs

Help promote .... all the good things that are happening with Network-Lawyers.
Forward this FAQ to a friend or associate with the suggestion that they
subscribe. Or, better yet, submit the canned article about Network-Lawyers at
http://network-lawyers.org/article to a newsletter or other law or practice
related periodical.

Topic and purpose .... we are legal professionals using the tools of the
Internet to exchange information about the use of the Internet and other
technology in the practice of law. Our group, its email-based discussion list,
its group weblog and "wiki" are launching pads for our common exploration and
development of new uses and innovation on the Internet and a place for helping
legal professionals who are new to the Internet.

Commercial content .... advertising and marketing of ones own products and
services is _off_ topic except for personal pages at the wiki web where you may
wax eloquent on your page about your law and law related products and services.

Membership .... is limited to lawyers, law students, faculty, legal assistants,
consultants to the profession and other legal professionals with an email based
discussion, a collectively edited weblog and wiki web or collaboration platform.
The group membership is limited to legal professionals.

Wiki web .... home base for the group where all members may create and edit web
pages using an simple full-page editor that works with your browsers. Currently
web pages at the wiki may be created by any member or members of the group for
any law or law practice related topic or project of interest. This is best place
for new members to get acquainted with Network-Lawyers:

http://network-lawyers.org/

Weblog .... where all members are invited to join in as editors, reporters or
kibitzers. You may subscribe to receive articles by email or by an XML RSS feed.
The weblog is located at:

http://netls.weblog.org/

Email discussion and archives .... email-based discussion list with threaded
messages--messages organized by topic--archives at Gmane newsgroups starting in
June 2003 at:

http://news.gmane.org/thread.php?group=gmane.culture.law.network-lawyers

and since that might wrap onto two lines and break here is a tinyURL to the same
place:

http://tinyurl.com/f536

and the serial, time and date order, message archives, with Yahoo ads to contend
with, is at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers

Email subscriptions .... The web page for Network-Lawyers at the Group.Yahoo.Com
address is where you may subscribe, modify how your subscription works,
temporarily suspend or unsubscribe from the email discussion group.

File library .... The Yahoo.com web page is where you may up load documents and
other files to be shared with the group. Like most discussion groups
attachments are not accepted for distribution via email but you may announce the
availability of a file in the file library. That is the best way to handle
distribution of files.

Moderators .... the co-moderators monitor the postings to the group to see that
the message traffic stays on topic.

Moderation of messages .... The first message or two posted that you post to the
group will be "moderated" by the moderators. There are seven or eight
co-moderators who share this task so that messages should be approved within a
few hours during the week days and a bit longer for messages posted on holidays
or over a weekend. Within one or two messages after you surface as an active
participant in the discussions, the moderators, who have lots of other things to
do, will set the message server to automatically forward your messages with out
their approval.

Guidelines .... for additional rules and such see the last FAQ which is several
years old prepared by Lew Rose who founded the discussion group that has evolved
into Network-Lawyers discussion, weblog and wiki web. What Lew had to say then
is generally applicable now with the exceptions noted above about the messages
being moderated on a much more limited basis. The link to Lew's FAQ and
guidelines is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers/files/guidelines.html

and since that might wrap onto two lines and break here is a tinyURL to the same
place:

Help, suggestions and comments ... all of the co-moderators may be reached with
one message sent to:

network-lawyers-owner@yahoogroups.com

You may track down the moderators at the Groups.Yahoo.Com site where they are
listed in the membership list with little stars after their names.

suggestions over at the DiscussionGroupFAQ at:

This case concerns a veteran British journalist jailed in Seattle,
Washington State, for publishing exposé on an EU web site. Seattle judges
provoked a worldwide outrage which raised significant questions about
rights to free speech and misuse of antiharassment orders for prior restraint.

The outcome affects all journalists. If the Supreme Court does not reverse
the lower court findings then each and every one of you can suffer the same
denial of constitutional rights under the First Amendment through misuse of
state antiharassment laws.

Subject: File - FAQ about Network-Lawyers aka netLs
Network-Lawyers@yahoogroups.com
Send Email Send Email

The link to Lew's FAQ and
guidelines is:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers/files/guidelines.html

and since that might wrap onto two lines and break here is a tinyURL to the same
place:

http://tinyurl.com/jw9l

Help, suggestions and comments ... all of the co-moderators may be reached with
one message sent to:

network-lawyers-owner@yahoogroups.com

You may track down the moderators at the Groups.Yahoo.Com site where they are
listed in the membership list with little stars after their names.

If you would like to help make this FAQ better, let's hear your ideas and
suggestions over at the DiscussionGroupFAQ at:

Thanks for participating in Network-Lawyers,

Mr. Dillard,

I would appreciate your noting my personal comments. I don't own this list,
but I have been a member for a very long while.

First, I strongly object to the below post. As a new member, perhaps you do
not understand that your post is inappropriate. I suggest you review the
archives to improve your understanding of this group.

Second, Ross's sig line is one thing <g>, your postings are unnecessarily
verbose and/or include too much extraneous material.

Thanks.

Subject: Vskype 200 user conferencing with audio, video and application sharing

Hi all,

Vskype is an ad-on to Skype. Skype (without Vskype) currently handles
conference calling with up to five users over the internet. Note Vskype
rhymes with hype. However, so does Skype but it has panned out well as a
quality voice over the internet service for up to 5 participants on a call.
The jury is out on Vskype. I am going to give its features a test drive.

Vskype from what I have gleaned from the Vskype site http://vskype.com (and
several articles from various blogs into voice over the internet) has the
following features:

1. Up to 200 participants with an audio connection. Need to see if that is
two way for all of the participants. That is quite a load in itself before
you get to the video and application sharing features.

2. Video with the out put of up to 9 or 10 video cams being displayed on, I
surmise, the screens of the 200 participants.

3. Application sharing broadcast to, I assume, the 199 other participants
from one of the connected computers. Application sharing with multiple
users can be mighty slow. I wonder how fast vskype will be as this.

Pulling all of this together: a series of Power Point slides could be
presented during a teleconference over the internet which featured talking
head shots of up to ten panelists. How will all of this integrates will
require some experimenting.

Has anyone taken a group on a test drive of Vskype yet,

John

kibitzers. You may subscribe to receive articles by email or by an XML RSS feed.
The weblog is located at:

http://netls.weblog.org/

Email discussion and archives .... email-based discussion list with threaded
messages--messages organized by topic--archives at Gmane newsgroups starting in
June 2003 at:

with, is at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/network-lawyers

Greetings!

I set up two Quick Topic pages for Lawyers affected by Hurricane Katrina.
The idea is that lawyers can log onto the page of their choice and get in
touch with other lawyers - members of their firm or opposing counsel. I am
willing to use my QT Pro account to set up password protected pages for
firms if that would be of any help. Just e-mail me.

The pages are:

New Orleans Lawyers http://www.quicktopic.com/32/H/CTuH2YDwKWr

Hurricane Katrina Lawyers http://www.quicktopic.com/32/H/ZXpdiAP9phhH

The ABA LawTech Group is looking for lawyers who can help affected lawyers
recover their data once the waters recede. Certainly this group has lots of
talent that can help these lawyers in their time of need. Any bright ideas
out there?
