Dear Colleagues,

This is to let you know that work on the Children on the Move! Web site at
http://ecoplan.org/children has now progressed to the point that we can
invite you to come in, have a look, and, in a few cases at least, give some
thought to the cooperative effort for the Special Edition of the Journal of
World Transport Policy and Practice that is to be given over to the Walk to
School. We suggest that the section entitled Work Plan could be a good
place to start if you wish to see what is being planned here and perhaps
what you might be able to do to contribute or support the effort.

Articles and Contributions:
Our first contributors are beginning to emerge from the woodwork, with kind
first offers just in from Robert Smith (UK, see www.walktoschool.org.uk) and
Richard. Killingsworth (USA, www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/kidswalk/index.htm),
and several more under discussion. One of our main concerns as part of this
organizational effort in the early stages is to ensure that the final
provides first rate coverage of our matters of concern in non-English
language countries (where we know that there are interesting things going
on). We can also count on a useful introductory piece and overview by our
Founding Editor, John Whitelegg, who has written and done some very
interesting and useful things in the child/transport area. I also intend
that your servant will write a final wrap up piece, that will attempt at
least in part of provide some ideas as to what might usefully follow our
international cooperative effort.

The Web site:
We see the Web site as being one of the principle driving forces in this
whole effort -- so if you have any ideas as to how to improve and extend it
this is the place to turn. We are, I should add, extremely interested in
getting and linking to first rate graphics and other media (audio, video).
And of course to programs, projects, Web sites and resources that are going
to be useful to the group.

Participation and Critical Mass:
Furthermore, experience has shown that there is a critical mass in making
this things work, and we have seen that one we have 150-200 or more informed
and active people in a given area linking via the Web site, we can expect to
see interesting things begin to happen spontaneously. For now, though, we
are well short of that... so if you have any recommendations for us
concerning people or groups who might be interested in following or, better
yet, taking an active role in this, they would be most appreciated.

There you have it. One year from today we should have this one in the bag.
But it's going to be a busy year if we are to do the job which our terrific
topic and those to whom it is aimed merit.

With kind regards,

Eric Britton
