Steve,
1/500 of a second should be more then fast enough, and 1/250 would work for them
coming off the ferry. Which dock will you be shotting at?
As a contiunation of my response about the guitar shot. The Nikon 50mm f1.8
costs slightly more then $100. It is an excellent low light lens. I would
sugest picking one up for low light shotting, and if you need something a little
longer, pick up a Nikon 105mm f2.8, or a Tamron 90mm f2.8, both are excellent
low light lenses.
