Interesting that you comment on the battery contacts. All of my
batteries have a groove-like pattern on the connections - the grooves on
this battery are the deepest. I did the pencil eraser trick and it did
not work. No LCD when battery is in the camera and the light blinks 3
times in the charger and then shuts off.

Are the TP batteries reliable? On B&H they are $10 cheaper than the
Nikon.

Aloha,
Pam

None of mine have died. I have one Nikon branded and three second tier
ones for the D50.
The sudden death you experienced is quite unusual from my experience with
rechargeable batteries, though admittedly the first 45 years experience
is mostly with NiCd chemistry and these are Lithium Ion if I recall. One
sign of decline is where the capacity trails off very gradually. The
other more common problem is what I call "slow to die" where the battery
behaves as if it is about to die, but takes forever to actually do it.
That is a sign that one of the internal cells has shorted. It would
probably cause rather slow recycling for the internal flash, and you
might get the low battery warning shortly after you recharged it but it
wouldn't totally quit for a rather long time.

Sudden death is rare. Take a hard look at the metal contacts on the
offending battery. Take a standard pencil eraser and polish them up and
try them again in the charger / camera.

I'm in the same boat, original battery is still behaving. I never did get any
spares (unless stealing/borrowing the battery from either of my two son's D50
cameras counts!

I can't be certain Pam but i would think it would be the UK equivalent of "No

Andy our experience with batteries is similar to yours.

1 with the D50 Kit 4 years ago and 1 a month or so later from a local Camera
cooperative here in Canada about 50 bucks cheaper.

So far the $50 we saved was worth it

Pam, in your case this is probably not a factor but the battery that came with
my D50 was over 15 months old when I got it; that's a fair piece out of the
lifespan of the battery!

Thanks Mike. I do not use "other" brand batteries - this was a Nikon
EN-EL3e purchased in 2006 as a backup for the D50 black one (which is
still going strong BTW). The suddenness of the battery death really
took my surprise - working one minute and dead the next (literally).
Now that I think about it, there may have been a warning flag about a
month ago when I was getting EEEE error on the D50 and thought the
camera was getting ready to give up the ghost. I changed the D50
battery and it has been fine since. I am pretty sure the battery in the
D50 was the same one that went to the great Li-ion in the sky this
morning. I number the batteries as I get them and this was my #2, which
meant it was the second battery I got. Now I number and date.

I'm just happy it was not the camera that was on the fritz!!

Talking about battery, on page 307 of the D300s manual there is
information on battery life percentage. I wish I had remembered this
before the Li-ion demise. All my other batteries are at 100% (good).

New Nikon battery from Amazon is on the way to Paradise.

Trouble in Paradise??

yeah batteries tend to behave in that fashion sometimes.

Just as often they will seem to be able to reach less and less charge until they
fail.

Was it a battery from Nikon or an equivalent from somebody else?

Just curios we have 5 batteries at this point 3 for our D300 and the 2 we had
for the D50 the 50 can use those for the 300 but the 300 can't use the earlier
models.

It would be interesting to see how the life expectancy of the Nikon units
compare to the much less expensive no name units.

Hope it helps

I had my camera out last night - took some pics, shut camera off,
pulled the card then used a card reader to upload to the computer.

When the upload was done I put the card back in the camera, formatted
it and turned the camera off. As I was putting my camera a away for the
night I saw that the LCD on top was blank - it appeared the battery had
run out, which is unusual as I seldom run my batteries real low. I
stuck the batter in the charger, the light blinked a couple times and
then turned off. I tried another battery in the camera and all was well
with the camera. I tried to recharge the dead one a couple times and
got the same results - blink, blink, dead.

This battery is about 2 years old - it is not my oldest - it is one of 4
that I rotate between the cameras.

Is this typical of battery end-of-life syndrome? Do they just up and
die like this?

I just want to add my Happy New Year to everyone on the list as well. I've been
a silent observer for quite a while now although older members may remember when
I was a lot more active. Life has thrown me some curves the past couple of years
but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I hope 2010 is the start of a lot
more photo activity for me. I bought myself a D300S for Christmas, I still have
the D50, my daughter keeps it stored for me in her room and keeps it active
too=)

I recall when I first joined this group, everyone was concerned because of the
silence from Pam, it was the first of her Hurricane D50 events. Glad you are
still here Pam and still collecting lenses too I see!

Joy and Love to all
Paul

Glad to hear that. I'm with you. I still have my D50 and will keep it
for a long time. It was my first dSLR.

I have not even looked. I am on a number of generic Nikon DSLR lists, a generic
photo list and this one. I dont think I need one dedicated to the D90.
Besides, I can always go to Lakewood and get help, from either you or Robi's
Cameras.

As you have no doubt discovered, there is a D90 group within Yahoo.
Based upon a few months aboard, my personal observation is that they tend
to be considerably less technical than this group.

The Refrubished D50, was body only, with a battery. No Charger. It had been
sent in for repair, and while it was gone the old owner purchased something knew
instead.

No. This is one list I doubt I will ever leave. And I still have the D50, it
is now just the back up body. I am thinking of getting my wife a referbished

Happy New Year back to you and to everyone else also.

BTW Pam, the offer of storing all those lenses in a low humidity environment
still stands. I wouldn't even charge rent and if you need I could verify their
continued low humidity mold free condition for you by sending you test shots
taken through them! No need to decide right now, just think about it, I'll be
here!

In addition to the good advice so far I'll add that the camera only meters off
the green sensors, not the blue or red. It can severely overexpose orange or
yellow flowers if the image includes dark green shaded flower stems as an
example. (Learned that the hard way.)

An example from a while back:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/7986867@N08/2332581416/

Other photos in the group I took had the flowers maxing out the histogram in my
editing software but showed them as fine in the camera. No blinky areas in the
playback screen.

Happy New Year.

And yesterday Afternoon I bought myself a present. I am now the proud owner of
a D90. I still have my D50. And while buying the D90, saw someone buy a
refurbished D50, for $299.
